    Aquascaping Tools

Find a vetrinary supply store, we have G&E pharmacy here in Edmonton.
  2. I would want to be running 3-4 aquaclear 50s if I was to use them long term and frankly, why hack up the trim when I can buy a better sized filter? On the other hand, it looks like the 110 won't work anyways as the tank isn't far enough away from the wall oops Since I have no interest in draining it just so that I can move it I've decided to bite the bullet and pick up a Fluval FX6 tomorrow, assuming I can find a petsmart that has one in stock. They are on sale and I was hoping to find a nice used FX5 but I got some unexpected Christmas money from grannie so what the heck It's the filter I should be using for the size of tank and stock levels that I want so I might as well just go git-er-dun as the saying goes. Thanks again for the help and suggestions.
  3. Thanks gents, I'll go pick one up tonight, I think they're even on sale
  4. We just upgraded to a Marineland 125 and I found that my Aquaclear 50s won't work with it because there is interference between the intake tube and the plastic frame around the top of the aquarium. The filters will hang over the lip fine, you just can't click the intake tube into place. I'm currently looking for a big canister filter (fx5 or fx6 if you have one?) but in the mean time I wanted to keep my established bio media from cycling. I could trim the aquarium frame to fit but I would prefer not to cut the frame of a brand new aquarium. I llike aquaclear filters for their simplicity and reliability, I keep several of them as backups or emergency quarantine filters so I was wondering if the larger 70 or 110 will fit over a bigger lip than the smaller filters? It makes sense to me but I'd prefer to check before buying one and finding out that it may or may not fit, hopefully someone has one of these filters and can either measure the gap or compare it to the smaller units.
  5. I learned to keep all my canister filters in a bucket, it's just more relaxing to KNOW that even if I have a little leak it will be caught and it makes maintenance simpler as there is no worry about drips and drops from the hose disconnects. If you are worried about leak detection you can put one of those blue paper shop towels from Canadian Tire in the bottom of the bucket, they darken up quite intensely when they get wet so it's much easier to tell if you've got any leakage.
  6. Big Al's in Edmonton sells steel stands, I'd assume the Calgary location can probably get them too. Or pretty much ANY welding shop in town will be able to put something together
  7. Reef people do similar tanks ALL the time with outlet and inlet on the same end, you'll need a powerhead or two to get good flow on the far end as Jvision suggested. I'd look at a Maxspect Gyre, they're a little pricey but they are made to create the desired flow in long tanks, it just might be a bit too powerful for an Iwagumi.

    New Finnex Leds

I'm not really sure why you have such a vendetta against Finnex but I bought one of their Ray II lights used at the fall auction and it's doing just fine even though it's at least a year old. It also has no problem growing plants even in my jungle tank. Finnex is very obtainable in Canada as long as you don't mind shipping it to Montana and picking it up lol, sure it's a pain in the butt but it's not like the border patrol is going to search your car and throw you in jail for trying to import a Finnex light. They don't have CSA certification so they can't sell them here and they are FAR from the only product that is in the same situation, many companies don't bother spending the money to certify something that won't sell in high enough volume to recoup the investment. I'd politely suggest you get some real world experience and stop believing everything you read, you might just surprise yourself with what you like or don't like once you've tried it.
  9. Store is empty n Facebook page is gone. They look to be done.

I saw Finnex.ca was gone. That sucks if Finnex won't ship up here, guess I'll need to pick em up myself next time I'm down there.

    Co2 Refill?

Oxypro in Edmonton. Is there a Linde in Ft Mac? With as many industrial users are up there someone has gotta be filling co2 locally
  12. Henry was selling off some tanks a few weeks ago and said he was planning to get rid of one row of tanks but I guess they just threw in the towel. It's a shame as they used to be my favorite, now we've just got a few freshwater stores left and none of them are really any good. Big Al's has been improving lately and I hope they keep it up because Calgary is too far just to go do some shopping.
  13. As for razor blades, go to Canadian tire and look for the big 4" wide ones with a dark blue holder. As far as I can tell they don't have any metal bits in the holder and with the 4" blade you can blade a lit of glass in a hurry. Maybe not the best solution for huge tanks with big braces but worth a try for $5.
  14. Pretty much any hydroponics store sells the aunblaster bulbs as well, I've paid about $8 for 54 watt T5ho at hydrolite.
  15. AI gets their tanks from Concept so there's no point in paying extra unless you REALLY want to support them. I'd just go straight to Concept or contact Neil Wilson.
  16. I discovered rainbowfish a little while back and I really like them due to the community compatibility and high activity levels. We kept them with Bolivian rams until camilanus worms killed off my rams. Some of the nicer angels are great display fish too, or you could get some apistogramma species.
  17. x2 I'm pretty sure I've read that marine substrates may release calcium into the water, it would probably be great for a brackish tank but freshwater planted can be challenging enough without adding potential problems.

    New Finnex Leds

The dimming is the main reason I'm considering waiting, the new features seem pretty great but people have had a LOT of success with Ray2s already and I'm not doing anything revolutionary with plants. Color adjustability seems like something I'd use once or twice to amuse visitors and ignore the rest of the time. Guess I'll see how many early adopters dump their lights and at what prices and do the math vs. the new light's pricing. Is there any word on when they will be available?

Hmmm... This is a dilemma. Do I wait for people to sell their used ray2s or get one of the new lights. Thanks for the heads up.
  20. Get a big water resistant power bar and do the math to figure out your power load. No more than 15 amps per circuit. Per circuit not per outlet. When there is more than one outlet in a room there is a chance they use the same circuit. You will need to spread your tanks to other rooms/circuits or have another circuit installed if you are drawing over 15 amps. Or use more efficient equipment. By the way, no cheating Count all heaters as if they are drawing their maximum.
  21. Aqua Giant has a little blue plastic clamp thinger to hold the hose on the tank edge. Works like a charm for about $4
  22. Your scape looks great, looking forward to seeing what you do with this one.
  23. Heaters... Touchy subject as everyone has their favorites. Eheim jager - not shatterproof no matter what anyone tells you. Good heater tho. Fluval E series - Nice looking but still just a glass tube. Also don't seem to deliver rated power, a 300 watt couldn't keep my 90 gallon at temperature in a warm house, 100 watt seemed OK in a 10 gallon though. IMO too much money for a temperature display. Titanium - never tried, might be my next heater. Aqueon pro - love em. Bomb proof, reliable for me, calibrated out of the box. Would buy again.
  24. Bring up the water level in your tank, my Rena has the same problem if I lower the water level more than a couple inches.
  25. I use Oxy Pro in Edmonton as well and I've had great service.
