  1. Hmm thinking of thinning some of my cory stock so maybe loretoensis, habrosus and duplicareus. Some least killis, some christyi kills and cherries. Depends On what's hard to catch that morning lol
  2. Ahaha Nope I only have 1 big tank left and its full with Angels, Killis, Apistos and some CW012, rest of the tanks are small 10-35G lol If it helps just looking for hastatus next auction unless something unusual pops up
  3. She is the original lol, ahhh the cory battles at auction lol. Awesome on the duplicareus fry!
  4. Looks like a striped Raphael catfish, not sure on compatiblity as I have no experience with
  5. I feel that it is turning into a flame war, and ask that a moderator please lock this thread. Thank you
  6. I have sat down several times to reply to this thread and each time started a reply, to simply put this. In response to working on which fish should or shouldn't be in the hobby, as stated in early reply was removing specialty fish like Pacus and Red Tail Catfish from chain petstores, not the hobby ( I wrote the early post too quickly and missed stating this earlier muy apologies). Rather have them in aquarium stores where they generally have knowledgeable staff who can steer the beginner aquariumnist away from them or make them aware of the special needs of said fish, rather than the chain pet stores who really could care less if the fish die as it means they can sell you more. I agree about not getting into the glofish debate as you said it will go on and then lead into the hybrid debate and continue ad naseum. The reason the store was named rather than left anonymous, was to prevent the many pm's and to keep everything above board and open. I was careful with my wording so as not to post as a negativity as a store (which I have and still recommend to others, as I have been there several times in the past when visiting Calgary) but rather to show a "negative connotation" on a species of fish offered. In NO WAY have I stated "Don't buy fish here." OR "Boycott Gold's for Cruelty", I simply asked fellow fish keepers to express complaints much like a customer review. I chose this forum (and one other) to air my concerns as I felt that the majority of fishkeepers here would not turn this into a torch and pitchfork mob but be able to express their concerns to the store in a fashion that would bring awareness to the store that the species offered was undesirable. Thank you for making Gold's aware of this thread as my main goal was to bring awareness to the store. I am currently aiming to come down hopefully in the next month, but travelling with 3 children for a trip of this length is a chore. I would gladly go to Gold's and express myself to them my concerns. the undesirability of the fish, the cruelty it endured to survive the process and how many of its species died in order to produce the amount the store purchased, as I have on many occasions stores here in Edmonton, selling species that endured similar cruelties ie jellybean parrots. I have read several articles in different forums, magazines, and on the internet all saying the same thing, can't fight it why bother. It's very disheartening, especially coming from such a wide spread subscription as Fish Channel but by eradicating even one store at a time that offers these fish, it can help create less of demand until all stores aren't selling and the suppliers invariably move on to another form of mutilation to make a quick buck. Do I realize this wont happen overnight? Yes. Do I think I can help make a difference? Yes. Do I believe getting Gold's to not order anymore of these fish will hurt its business? No. As they offer many more non mutilated fish that sell I have no doubt just as well if not better.
  7. I know, just hoping if pet stores don't bring in, since people aren't buying that can prevent the unnatural death of what would have been otherwise a healthy beautiful fish. Next step is preventing certain local chain stores from selling fish that really shouldn't be in the hobby ie pacus, red tail catfish, and that is going to be a battle. Even my furred pets I opted for the more expensive chip over tattooing due to less pain involved. I wouldn't have even done that but if they ever got lost I wanted them home. I know some who will read this thread will think I'm nuts or silly but it's something I feel I need to do as a fishkeeper Edit-at least tattoing your dog serves a purpose, doing it for decoration does nothing
  8. I hope they don't Jorg and I realize your attempt at humor, it's just seeing the deformities and mutilations done to fish upset me. I've joined a wonderful bunch of people who are attempting to get the sale of dyed/tattooed/mutilated (ie heart shaped parrotfish) banned for sale in Canada as their isn't much regulations (as your probably aware) concerning cruelty to fish as they are not technically considered a pet
  9. Being as I had been informed down to tank location in store by a fellow aquariumnist, who had patronized the store this weekend, and that I'm passionate about bringing awareness to animal cruelty, I felt the need to share on the hope that our fellow Calgarians fish keepers could help. On the whole, Golds is an excellent store and I'm sure that if it was brought to their attention the concerns regarding the fish, that they wouldn't bring in more as it was probably a novelty they brought in. I do not feel that I violated the TOS as I didn't state anything negative about the store itself, but if the moderators feel I have then more than welcome to remove my post and I will continue to promote my cause in other forums. Have a nice day.
  10. Hello everyone it was brought to my attention that Gold's aquarium in calgary is selling tattooed fish, if anyone can confirm and complain while in or phone and complain so that hopefully they will see the light and not bring in anymore TIA
  11. Ah okay well then try Cjerrom, he had some in stock abit ago
  12. I usually get them laid singly around 20-30 eggs laid every 4 weeks split up over around 5 days
  13. Are you looking for the black aeneus, the black schultzei or the Venezuelan black which is orange with black sides?
  14. So after downsizing a bit and some shuffling, I find my lucky 75G is lacking. Current stock list is a breeding pair of triple blacks, 6 aphyosemion christyi, 7 asst otocinclus, plakat betta. So besides Corys (you knew I was going to say that, all tanks that cant have corys are lacking lol) what else would you suggest for some pizazz? Not really into tetras or barbs. Its a bit limited in swimming space due to plants so thinking another bottom dweller. Maybe a trio of apistos?
  15. Anyone hear of these guys? Any experience or possibly where to get? Hubby discovered these guys on Google, and I have a feeling going to empty the wallet even more. His current picks are 6 julidochromis transcriptus, 3 Altolamprolongus calvus (must be black or ink fin) and my pick 3-6 synodontis lucipinnis all hopefully fitting in a 70-75G (3ft) tank.
  16. Hi, in the livestock buy and sell "Large fish for sale" Wscj_aquatics has a pair offered for sale
  17. So I have a pair in a 15G, sand bottom, live plants and a AC30. Heater set for tank at 78F. Now to breed these guys I was told to use a container of peat, with a hole in the lid. Sounded simple but forgot to ask what type of peat to use. I have a box of Fluval peat granules, are these okay to use? If so how do I store the eggs in the granules, just dump water and put in a ziplock? How long for storage do most do as online read everything from 3 months to 1 year. Also food recommendations? I've currently been feeding a brine shrimp flake (OSI) and every 3 day putting in frozen mysis or brine shrimp. Will this work to condition the female? Any thoughts, experiences, suggestions welcome.
  18. So finally got tired of the mass of hair algae I had growing in my 10G cherry shrimp tank, pain to move and vacuum under. So this Sunday I removed a small softball size mass, the shrimp seemed to like hiding in it as well as the least killi fry I shook out. Fast forward to Wed all the Planaria that was under it are now on the glass eating the brown diatoms along with the new ottos I just bought. I knew it would throw the tank out of whack and wanted more otos anyway and let's face it need to fatten up store bought ones anyway. What I didn't expect was what I think is another algae (not hair) that looks like spiderwebs to appear. This stuff is clear/greyish. Any thoughts on what it is and best way to get rid of? I've already started first of many daily WC to start to clear the planaria, and a vinegar soak to kill the leftover algae on my sponge.
  19. Worse was on the internet looking for them and most offered as F1's for sale are cross bred with a silver scalare, giving them increased size and the beak. Might be interesting to find and attempt to spawn as a project. The idea of an angel variety with a 2" body occurring naturally just seems amazing provided it doesn't empty the pocketbook lol
  20. *sigh* always a catch lol explain why there is a "dwarf" angel and tons of people don't have them.
  21. Hello all, just curious if anyone has these and have bred them yet? Are they difficult to care for or breed?
  22. You have no idea how jealous I am right now LOL
  23. Try getting some duckweed, lots of it. I'm assuming you have goldfish/koi, they will eat it but its great for sucking up nitrogen (ammonia, nitrite, nitrates). Will need some light but it reproduces like crazy and is a healthy food for goldfish, they may poop a bit more though so keep up daily or every other day WC.
  24. Anything really, I have Anubias, java moss, java fern, vals, crypts and swords and they are happy. Just like plants lol if able add some feathery plants like cabomba and could see eggs.
