  1. this is a great feature to have...manual validation. Don't ever stop this! LOL
  2. An older topic but still information can be given. Regarding the search of smaller words or acronym...most forums on the net or at least a very high % will have this and what I call a flaw. Coders of such products as IP Board which is what this forum uses, should recognize that such terms can still be searched for and still provide appropriate results. Until this is realized by the people who make these forum products this problem, yes i call a problem will always exist. This has nothing to do with AA or any other enduser forum but rather again with the developers. my 2 c ck
  3. There are tonnes of online image editing services FOR FREE...more than any hyperactive breeding shrimp you'll ever come across. There are kinda two main online ways to do what your asking. One is a typical image/media hoster such as tinypic.com (thousands of such sites exist). With this site you can upload a large image file (for a test right now I uploaded a 20 meg tif file) then it will give you options to resize it. If by chance the image host does not allow large files over 10 meg...easy fix...just use another that will. These are basic and quick tools which do work well. Now for the second option. If your concerned a bit more about quality or want a bit more control over this process you can try online image editors. Again also free. I'll give some examples: http://www.sumopaint.com/start/ http://fotoflexer.com/ http://pixlr.com/ http://www.splashup.com/splashup/ http://www.photoshop...ditor?wf=editor with many, MANY more. Now, with this type of service you get a few higher end features that you will not find with a typical online image host such as tinypic. With this second set of websites you can actually modifiy your image to suit your needs without paying hundreds of $ for standalone image software such as Adobe Photoshop. For an example I had picked this as I know it's a stable web application. This will show the available features in the Photoshop Express Editor: Here is an example of what the full editing screen looks like: As you can see with these two pictures...MANY great features to edit digital photographs exist with this free product. If anyone has any questions...drop me a line as I do have experience in such things. I hope this might help someone, ck
  4. There are loads of good image hosting websites. The two main that I use are http://tinypic.com/ and http://imageshack.us/ . Many have little handy features such as resize etc to make your life easier as was said in the post just above mine. Here is an unbiased list of many good image/media hosting sites: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_photo_sharing_websites ck
  5. Grab a razor blade and give that a go. Use a bit of tank water as a lubricant so it's not against dry glass. Always worked like a charm in the past. A razor blade is also a 100% sure fire fix for green spot on your aquarium glass ! The kind I use at gives a larger UNSHARP gripping area.
  6. Just remember tho...play sand is inert. It will not provide any nutrients for a planted tank. Some people as well as I have noticed that for fine small plants such as the short grasses everything can be pulled up easier with a fine sand than a gravel. I know aquatic keepers who are dedicated to just sand...however they use pool sand rather than play sand. It is of a higher quality (if there is even such a thing lol) with less dust. It's also meant for a human contact situation as being in a filter so there will be much less a possibility of unwanted foreign debris or contaminates. Such as a product by lets say Target, who also sells cement and many other fish hazardous products. BUT of course someone will always say...so and so produces cement and pool sand both...my comments were just of a general guideline as I know others have concerns as I said above. I'll post a tip later to save someones floss when a quick water clean up is needed as when vacuuming or adding new substrate...to get rid of all those solids in suspension! ck
  7. I know the age of the topic and the OP being, well not here anymore...I was curious if this sort of group buy did happen? thx
  8. Upon researching CRS with the almighty google...I've noticed a trend. More people are saying they are having a problem with prime and dieoffs with their CRS. Dunno why...neither did any of those other posters but an interesting tidbit of info I think.
  9. I'll put in my hat to this ring. I will recommend Purigen. Been using for a while and it kicks butt. What I had done is to go to the local fabic shop...grab a yard of Organza (a tight weeve fabric that will hold the small spheres of Purigen) and made my own pockets to hold the filter material. You can make any size and shape this way. I had choosen Organza because it's a very tight weeve and since it's poly based...the bleach will not react with it...such as a cotton. Make sure to use poly based thread aswell...hate for that work to be done when a cotton thread is used. I guess it helped since my wife sews. Another thing that I recommend to people for a quick fix on water clarity...don't waste expensive floss or the like. Let's say if your throwing in new substrate or vacuumed and the water is quite a mess...add a sheet of paper towel...yes you heard right...paper towel to the filter at the top. Change it every hour or so and that will get rid of most of the solid. Works like a charm and have been doing this for years. I would recommend though don't use paper towels that have ink prints etc...just the plain jane bounty etc. will work great !! Someone might respond saying NOOOOOO...your adding some werid voodoo to your water column. To that I'd say no. No ammonia, nitrate or any voodoo is added to the water column. Hope this had helped someone. ck
  10. Hello there...as the topic says...you've just got another Calgary member. I've been keeping assorted FW 'things' for quite some time and have gotten good results...so now I'm going to give CRS a try. I don't breed for a profit but rather just keep fish and assorted shrimp for the viewing pleasure of my family. (...don't tell them but I quite enjoy it to boot ) A great forum...many good reads so far...and more to come I'm sure. Once again, Howdy. ckmullin
