  1. But the pond section seemed as good as any. I was thinking of doing something a little different for my next tank. I've had fresh water (currently running a 70gal Cichlid tank) and I've had salt water tanks, so I thought I'd try a small terrarium style tank for a change. I have a 30gal tank that I was thinking of putting some small fish, perhaps guppies or something along that nature, and newts. I had them once when I was a kid and they were cool but I didn't have a proper set up for them. So I thought I'd try them again so I'm wondering if anyone is raising any that could pass along some tips. Even just where to get them in Calgary would be helpful.

There's been some pretty rad newts on Kijiji from time to time. Even free at times. I think it sounds like you're going for a riparium/vivarium - and that's a brilliant plan. There's some Red Claw crabs always at PetSmart that would LOVE for you to save them. White clouds, endlers, and least killifish would be awesome additions IMO.

  2. Your RCS should be fine IMO. Either way, with your water params and the desire for an engaging fish, Dwarf Puffers are the way to go. You could easily house some cheap Ghost Shrimp in the tank for a fraction of the cost, and they'd be able to handle themselves against the puffers. Ramshorn snails can keep the tank clean and provide a food source for the puffers - and every now and then you can toss in some bloodworms for a nice treat.

  3. Little_One, I will post some pictures tonight of my two set ups. I have one tank with s/ss/sss CRS and another I have been preparing for the Sulawesi Cardinal Shrimp I plan on putting in it both using the above filter. I also have a High Tech planted aquarium in my home as well.

Schweet! I'd greatly appreciate that. I love seeing how other people have their tanks setup and how well they appear to function. Mucho gracias!

  4. Key thing I would recommend with shrimp is go for a couple of sponge filters so the babies survive. Riverfront sells some nice stackable sponge filters for cheep which can give you great filtration with lower flow as well which will make the shrimp happier and are super easy to maintain. The shrimp will eat off of the filters as well.

What are these stackable sponge filters of which ye speaketh!? I must know. Please.

  5. Good morning fellows. I just picked up a 20 gallon long and I'm trying to figure out what substrate would be the best for a planted tank that I hope to leave alone for a while... I've been running my current Fluval Ebi with the stock stratum, but I'm wondering about the benefits of utilizing Flourite for long-term sustainability.

Also, does anyone know if Flourite Dark, Black, etc have different properties or are those merely their brands? I ask because they seem to market them differently.

    Thanks!

  6. Hey folks. Long time no posting.

I'm curious about the various types of shrimp we have around Calgary. I've been in search of macros but I can't seem to track them down often, and I always seem to miss when Big Al's brings in other unique types; i.e. skunk shrimp, etc.

Please post the shrimp varieties you have and if you are open to FS or FT.

    Thanks!
