  1. I have been given a winter project this week and thats to build a small pond for our patio. Maxed out I can do about 150gallons but im thinking closer to 120 or 90. Now I have found a small pre built pond that looks like a large bowl but I am wanting to keep koi in it during the spring an summer. Now dont go flaming me here. I know koi need more space but I will be purchasing small koi in the spring, raising them, then adding them to my fathers pond in the fall. With the KHV virus we dont want to take any chances and with my small pond we both win. So I am lookig for some ideas and insiration from anyone with a small above ground pond pr even a large above grous pond. Ryan
  2. We just use the pump from the filter. Basically like jvision says point it straight up and break the ice if it domes over. If its really cold we use a trough heater.
  3. Movie your plants into the hext and put 6 or 7 discus into the 75. Discus dont need the pristine water to survive they need it for proper growth. Its thought discus mucus has a growth inhibitor in it to stunt other discus. So when growing they need daily water changes. As adults you can easily get away with 2 or 3 times a week. Put in a big sponge filter, AC500 with the sponges and a sponge pre filter is all you need for that tank. If your starting out id skip putting anything in the tank other than a heater and the filter(s). This will help you and be easier to get out all the waste. Personally this is my 2nd venture into discus. I have a 50 gallon and will put 4 or 5 adults in there. Water changes 2x a week with ro and tap mix. Im shooting for a 75ppm TDS. Water is at 84 and a sponge filter. Next year I may upgrade or just start splitting pairs i to individual 20g "High" tanks.
  4. 3 discus will not be happy in this tabk. You will have a run that will get the crap beat out of him and a pair if your lucky. Otherwise you will have one really nice one and 2 that are beat nearly to death. If you want discus spend the money and invest in a pair. I am waiting for Rick at Canadian Aquafarm Discus hatchery to get in some adult ARSGs for myself. I had a member on here pm me and slag rick pretty hard then offered to send me pictures of his fish instead. Fish were never sent and it left a bad taste for this member. Rick went out of his way to pair 2 discus for me, how many people would do that for a customer 1000km away without even a deposit down? Hos next shipment comes in aug september we could do a joint prder and split shipping if you want. This will gove you time to get set up as well.
  5. Maroons get way too big for your tank. If you want more than clowns look at ocellaris and Perculas. If you only want clowns you could look into skunks but other wise the clarkii complex and maroons get far too big.
  6. No problem! Give that tank another week to settle out and by next weekend you should easily be able to buy uour 2 clowns. Any idea what species your going to add? In a 26 gallon tank you can probably add another 2-3 fish in that 2-3 inch range any idea what else you like? I have a blue assessor in with my clowns but am looking for a nice little wrasse and a goby.
  7. Thats false I have 2 clowns and they dont host or bother anything. I even have nems in my tank. Most clowns are captive bred and have never seen an anemone anyway so dont worry about it. Buy your clowns and in a year or so when you can keep that tank stable then buy your anemone. A tank that size about your only option is a Bubbletip, the rest fet far too large. Even a BTA can reach 10" in diameter! But there is alot of options other than anemones. Clowns will host in Fuzzy Mushrooms, Elegance Corals, Hammer Coral, Frogspawn, Green Star Polyps, my Wyoming Whit even hosted my acans! Those are all much easier to keep than anemones.
  8. Thanks! I have been in this hobby for about 20 years now. Been keeping fish since I was young and this is my 2nd venture into discus. Those sound like nice tanks wild discus are definatly a holy grail of discus. Ive always wanted a wild discus & Altum angel tank... Especially the altums!
  9. Another addition here I have had to swap out heaters. The fluval 200W isnt keeping the water at 86 degrees, infact it is struggling to handle 83. Remember the room is heated to 80 degrees so I am finding this odd. I swapped it out for an Ehiem Jager 250W. Hopefully this works better.
  10. No worries Spruce I got thick skin and dont get my feelings hurt too easy. I want to go with a 4 foot tank but here is what I am dealing with. This tank is in my reptile office where I run my buisness Revolution Boas. I was having some issues with low humidity due to my space heater and set up a small tank. Now this has grown into a hobby in my snake room. The room is small and I keep boas which need 4x2 cages plus some larger racks. So here it is as soon as you walk in. My plan was to have the tank against the wall between the closet and power panel. THis is 34" but the tank will fit. At this time I cant move it there. so I moved the tank where it sits which I actually like. But if the tank was 1 foot longer I wouldnt be able to fully open that middle rack. And here from the other corner, the 20g is going up for sale soon. If my planted tank livestock sells I can use that wall to house a longer tank up to 6 feet if I really wanted. But for right now the 50G will due. What kind of discus do you have? I am on the hunt for some Albino Red Spot Greens. Missed out of a pair when I left the country, when I got back and was able to message him they had sold. So he is on the hunt for a few more for me.
  11. Thanks Spruce I have heard those are the old school days of feeding fish. Even the guys on there are starting to say to avoid the beefheart, chicken and Bison, replace with a fish based meal. I can get my hands on some high end Pacific Plankton as well as some nice blood worms. Was thinking that mixed with feedings of NLS Discus Pellets, Tetra Colour Bits, New Era Tropical Flake, New Era Discus Pellet, and Prime Reef Flake. Maybe even some PE Mysis Shrimp. Hopefully this is a nice varied diet for these fish.
  12. Thanks for the concern guys. Ive been talking to some of the die hards on Simply Discus and 10 gallons per fish seems to be the norm. If anything comes up I can bump up my water changes to 3x a week. Jorg I intend on adding another sponge filter (if I can find one no shop here sells them) or an AC 70 with only sponges and a pre filter.
  13. I should be able to fit 5 adults into this tank. 50 gallons, 1 fish per 10 gallons.
  14. I am setting up another tank this time for some Discus. A little backstory, I have kept discus in the past in a 40g "breeder". I picked up my first discus from Riverfront back when they were in the old store. I had a Red Turqoise, Blue Diamond, White Diamond, and a Blue Snakeskin. I had them for a while when I was bitten by the Saltwater bug and have been keeping reef tanks ever since. Recently I shut my reef down and moved the fish I kept into a 29g Biocube. Now that my first year of technical training I got the Discus bug again. Enter the new tank. 50g Hagen Tank this is the 3 foot model. Fluval 200W Submersible heater Hydro-Sponge 4 This room is heated to 80F so hopefully this heater will hold the temps at 86. I dont want to do the big daily water changes required to grow discus so I am going to pick up adults and do 50% water changes 2x a week. Right now I am waiting for the tank to finish its cycle and I will keep track of my progress in this thread.
  15. They might eat babies but I dont think galaxies or white clouds could take adults.
  16. What about dario dario, galaxy rasbora, or Celebes Rainbows. I have heard dwarf cories are compatible as well, if i could catch mine I would try them.
  17. Thanks for the link blink. I heard the first version had this problem but fluval fixed with with a different silicone. Have you heard this? I have a silicone/epoxy that cures underwater I could run across the top of the background to help secure it in.
  18. I didnt mention this but yesterday when I picked up my Fluva Ebi I also picked up 5 Cherry Shrimp and what I thought was the only Red Crystal Shrimp. The plan was to put them in my planted tank with my Electric Blue Rams and Apistos, the RCS I would put in a breeder net. I picked up 6 more Cherry Shrimp and another Red Crystal Shrimp we found while fishing for the Cherries. Both groups ended up in the breeder net awaiting the Fluval EBI to be ready and now I realize there are 3 different typed of shrimp in there. There are 9 Cherry, 2x Crystal, and 2 that are shaped and size like the Crystal but they are a Blueish grey with vertical stripes. Of course the breeder net doesnt allow pictures but I will post them up once I am able to get some good ones.
  19. Got bored today so I picked up some stuff for the Ebi. Looks like a hitch hiker snail made it into the tank, I have no idea what kind it is yet. When I started After I was done. Check out the snail in the bottom right.
  20. I just bought my first Ebi and like it but there was a few problems. Either the tank or the glass top isnt square. The glass top will not fit on the top of the tank with all 4 of the glass top inserts installed. Second was the foam pad was in pretty rough shape when it showed up and needed some trimming. Overall not a bad kit for $100!
  21. SuperGuppyGirl I looked at a 5g and 10g kit but by the time enough substrate, chemicals, and other accessories were purchased this kit was still a cheaper buy. Even with all the problems the kit had (not being squared, foam pad cut rough) I would go this route again. Well worth the money! 425nm I was thinking the same thing about the sponge but had read a few threads where people tried the floss and it messed with the pump making it loud. I did see people use nylons to cover the intake to protect baby shrimp so I may try this. This substate seems pretty porus so I am not too worried about surface area for benificial bacteria, like you said its just for shrimp. I will definatley keep an eye on nitrate and ammonia levels just in case.
  22. Once the substrate was in the tank it was time for step 3, getting the filter in place. This is appears to be a good little internal filter for shrimp. It has guard bars to keep shrimp out, has a spray bar to spread out the stream and has a valve to control the amount of flow. Here is the 90 elbow with the flow valve, its a pretty simple set up to control flow. It does fit into the filter fairly tight so dont be afraid to use some muscle to get it to fit. The spray bar is the same way, pressure fit so dont be afraid to use a little muscle to get it to slide on. Just be carfeul your putting it on straight so you dont break any parts. To install the filter has 3 suction cups, 2 on the motor housing and one on the filter material housing. Wet the suction cups with water and just press the filter where you want it. I chose to put it in the back corner, the dark color allows it to kind of blend into the background so its not as "in your face". Make sure you leave 1/4" of space between the ilter and back ground so none of your shrimp get stuck! Ok so now the fun part, we are going to get stuff wet! Remember earlier I mentioned this Fluval substrate is fragile so dont just pour your water in. This will cause it to break apart and cloud the tank for day... or so I am told by the guy at the LFS. I guess he made that mistake. So I put a small plate in there and went to town. YOu have this tank filled with water and substrate now so im sure you want to see in there. Time to light it up! First pull out the bracket that mounts to the light and the tank, it is a clear plastic piece inside the box the light comes in. Attach this to the light first. To do this you will need to remove the screw and lock washer on the bottom of the light fixture. Slide the mounting bracket over the peg, slide the lock washer on, then put the screw cap back on. When finished it should look like this. To mount the light to the tank you undo all three screws until they are flush inside the channel, slide the aquarium back glass inside the channel and tighten all 3 screws with your fingers. Now these need to be tight but do not over tighten them or you will break the bracket. Finger tight is fine. Now loosen the screw on each side of the fixture and put the fixture into the position you want then re tighten the screws. Now that the tank is filled with water and your light is installed its time to put the lid on. You will see the the lid is much smaller than the footprint of the tank, this is where the lid rests come in. They are the clear "L" shape pieces of plastic strapped to the cardboard sheet with the net and filter. If you look close you will notice there are 2 different styles, one set is for the curved corners on the front of the tank, the other set is for the sharper corners on the back. These just slide over the glass sides and rest on the top then the glass top sits on these. Now I dont know if it was just my kit but either the tank isnt square or the top isnt square because the top will not fit on with all 4 top rests on the tank. I have to pull off one of the back corners to get it to fit. I will post some FTS in the morning when the light comes back on. I also wanted to mention this tank is located in the room I keep my reptiles. The room is heated to 80 degrees so this is why I didnt put a heater in the tank. Actual tank temps range closer to 78 than 80. I am looking forward to getting my shrimp but right now I am taking it slow. My next step is to find a nice center piece rock or driftwood and some plants.
  23. The box is open, everything is unpacked, and this was my first look at all the contents. They all seem to be here and in good shape. So my first step now that everything was unpacked was to get the tank into the location I wanted it, this all starts with this foam pad for the bottom of the tank. At first I was pretty depressed to see the rough edges on this foam, this doesnt make for a very nice finished look. I was a little more relieved to see that the foam pad is slightly bigger than the aquarium; this means I can make a clean trim job. Here it is with the foam pad trimmed with a razor blade. Now that the tank was in its spot and the foam pad was trimmed step 2 was to get the substrate ready to go in the tank. This Fluval substrate is super fragile, it breaks down into dust very easy so you need to be gentle when handling and washing it. I read some reviews online and it says this is great for plants as well as a place for baby shrimp to live until they are big enough to venture out on their own. Once I got the package opened I put the substrate into a colander and just used a gentle stream from the faucet to rinse it, this worked really well for me but took a long time. I have no idea why some of the Fluval substrate is white Its actually a very dirty substrate, look at all the foreign material mixed in that shouldnt be there. But eventually I got all the big stuff out and the substrate rinsed off.
  24. Hey everyone, I was in my LFS today checking out their "getting out of Livestock" sale. I was just planning of getting some male guppies for my Dwarf SA Cichlid tank (needed some movement) when I got to the Fluval EBI they keep their shrimp in. I have been really wanting to get into shrimp for a while and what started as a guppy buy turned into a Red Cherry Shrimp buy and then turned into a new tank buy. I got a deal I couldnt resist on this tank and it followed me home. The review is simply my own opinion on my first experience with this tank. I hope you guys enjoy the review and follow along this en-devour with me. My initial impression on this tank was a good one. I had read a few reviews on the Fluval Ebi for keeping inverts and it is supposed to be one of the best on the market. It is a 7.9g semi cube tank that includes everything you need for shrimp (except live plants, decor, and a heater). One of the employees at the store mentioned he had this tank with some Red Crystal Shrimp (what I want to keep) and recommended this kit, along with seeing this on the box I had to give it a try myself The kit includes 1x 7.9g Semi cube tank 1x Glass Lid 4x Lid rests 1x Internal Fluval Nano filter with spray bar 1x thermometer with suction cup 1x bag Fluval shrimp substrate 1x Fluval PC light fixture 1x Fluval Light stand 1x Shrimp Net 1x 35g container Fluval Shrimp Granules 1x 60ml container Fluval Shrimp Safe 1x 60ml container Fluval Shrimp Mineral Supplement After you get it home here is what you see when you first get the box opened.
