  1. It actually does both, because in order to lower the pH you first have to reduce water buffering capacity by lowering its carbonate hardness (KH). Thast's what organic acids from peat moss do - they first react with carbonates and hydrocarbonates in the water, thus reducing carbonate hardness. Once carbonates and hydrocarbonates are low, free H+ ions concentration rises lowering the pH. So both are achieved by peat moss. RO also reduces general hardness (which peat moss cannot do), and can be used in conjunction with peat moss.

  4. It is true that contemporary power filters (hang on type) have filter medium too small and the flow rate too high (for marketing and sales reasons) and would benefit from decreasing the flow and doubling the amount of media?

  7. Most of stones that you have on the picture have high limestone content. They will harden your water even more than our water already is. Unless that's what you need, of course...
  8. Hi, I am setting up a Sri Lanka biotope tank and I would like to make it as close to reality as possible. Which means that it should reproduce conditions in a specific select locality. I am piggy backing from the research article on Wak Oya tributary to Kelani river, which goes into a great detail on fish species, but offers very little on aquatic plants: http://thakshana.nsf.ac.lk/pdf/JNSF1-25/JNSF22_1/JNSF%2022_1_65.pdf Does anyone have any suggestions on the resource that can be used to figure out plant species by river basin in Sri Lanka or at least by the country province? Except Google, of course, ‘Cause I am already using it extensively Thanks.
  9. Looks like P. Filamentosus indeed. Young fish are currently sold by Pisces in calgary. I am going to buy a bunch in the next little while.
