  1. Well, I certainly didn't expect such a warm welcome so I thank you all. I think if this forum was a country, it would be the Netherlands, or anywhere that is warm and welcoming for that matter. I guess that's up for debate I suppose.
  2. A floating ball sounds like a good idea, I will try and incorporate that as well as some marbles plus add some more variety to his diet. Hopefully he won't find a floating ball too ominous on the surface of his tank. Also, I forgot to mention, the other thing he does is he opens his mouth quite wide and swims towards my face very aggressively when I have my face close to the glass. Anyone else had this experience of being charged by their cichlids?
  3. The other thing I do is buy some minnows and try to 'sneak' them into his tank without him seeing so he can chase them around and eat them. Usually it's rosy reds, I heard the feeder goldfish aren't that healthy for carnivorous fish. What other live fish can I feed besides the rosy reds?
  4. Alright, thanks for the suggestions guys. I will be sure to get some marbles he can push around and get some mental stimulation from. Maybe some other objects too.
  5. It's a 30 gallon tank I believe. And yes, I know it's too small for an oscar and that they require at least a 55 gallon but he is not yet fully grown (about the size of my hand) and we are hoping to upgrade in the near future.
  6. Bored you say...hmmmm, how should I keep him entertained? We try to rearrange his tank every now and then but I guess that's not enough mental stimulation. What do you suggest?
  7. My family has a single albino tiger oscar who has a tank to himself in our basement. Sometimes, when we are watching TV down there, he will suddenly have a burst of energy and swim around violently for a second or two, then goes back to what he was doing before. Sometimes he will create splashes in the same fashion or randomly attack plants. is this normal behaviour for an oscar? Also, he lays against the side of the tank sometimes and just chills out and looks dead but acts normal otherwise. My mother has also claimed she has seen him floating on the surface when she goes to turn his light on in the morning. Maybe he just sleeps like that, who knows...anyways, any information is much appreciated.
  8. I work for PetSmart and if we have a fish for too long and it grows too large for its tank, we simply give it away to anyone whom is interested and obviously has room for it. I picked up an albino tiger oscar because it had grown too large. Same thing for other animals as well, if they don't sell for a long time, the price eventually drops to zero and they get adopted out. I guess we don't make much of our money in live creature sales...but it would suck to keep them their forever
  9. Oh yes, I am also a big film fan too so I thought the countdown slides were suitable for a profile picture. Also, I'm a Canon guy myself and am currently saving up for a new lens I want. Maybe some people here do some good underwater photography. Man, such an expensive hobby...however, I'm sure everybody on this forum knows about expensive hobbies seeing as keeping an aquarium can be quite costly. Anyways, thanks for the reply, I guess I'm no longer a forum virgin and have most likely entered a world which will consume gratuitous amounts of time late at night. And yes, I will be sure to be prepared to do battle if the occasion should arise and a flame war erupts. I do have some experience on Facebook, but I'm by no means a veteran in the art of waging a flame war.
  10. Hello all, I'm new here, and by here I mean internet forums as well this specific forum. I have ready through many forums in the past and enjoyed witnessing many flame wars, but have never been a member of any sort of online forum. Anyways, in keeping with the category of this post I will divulge some information about myself. I'm a soon-to-be second year photography student at the Alberta College of Art and Design (ACAD) and I'm hoping to be some sort of professional photographer one day. I'm not really much of a fish hobbyist but we do have a fish tank in our basement populated by a single albino tiger oscar. Oh yes, and I do work in a pet store so I do have more knowledge than the average person when it comes to aquariums. I am by no means an expert, but I know a few things. Anyways, I guess I will give this whole forum thing a whirl and hopefully become a decent member of AA and further my knowledge about fish and aquariums so I can give more accurate information to people when I'm at work. Oh yeah, and I should probably scour the internet for a decent profile picture (if that's what they are called).
