  1. Thanks Jason. It does look like a cottony growth. He just sits in the middle, not moving. Even when other fish are frantic around him, he just chills. I have a few almond leaves (came with my shrimp order). Anything special need to be done to them first, or do I just toss a couple in the tank? Tommy told me to soak them for 24 hours before adding to the shrimp tank.
  2. So, I returned from Edmonton with some new fishies last night. They looked good in the store, and I didn't get a good chance to look at them in the bag, I was transferring them in the semi-dark to a tank that I kept the lights off in. This morning, everyone was active and eating, with the exception of this little guy. Pardon the poop and NLS, but he chose to sit in the middle of the tank. Any corydora experts want to weigh in on this? In QT with him is 2 angels, 2 apistogramma cacatuoids, 5 healthy schooling corydoras. Thanks in advance!
  3. mbuna are veggie eaters...tasty tasty plants are too enticing My mbuna tank has 2 boxes of cichlid stones, some drift wood, and a few fake plants...
  4. Hi all! Looking for suggestions, and options...etc. My wife (that's right, she's awesome) wants to put a fish tank in our unborn sons' room. She wants some fish that he'll be able to see and follow. What do you think a good stocking mix for this tank will be for my little man to grow with? I'll take livestock and plant options... Hardware: 29G long, T8 (10,000k), Fluval heater, fluval c3 and fluval 204. I have tri-colour blue gravel in right now, but will likely be switching to playsand. Right now this tank is our QT tank, with my angels and spawning rams.
  5. It is. Many suffer from MTS.
  6. another option is to check the classifieds on here. http://albertaaquatica.com/index.php?showtopic=40695 This person has a Fluval 205 for sale for $50.00. If that works it's an option, or PM an offer if you'd like, never know if you don't try.
  7. Depending on what your budget is, and what your plans are...I personally prefer canister filters. I have a couple fluvals and a couple eheims. They make less noise, and are less visibly obtrusive (assuming you can put them under your stand). I order 90% of my hardware from www.petsandponds.com $14.99 flat rate shipping to your door, free on orders over $200.00. I get my Prime, NLS, media, pumps, sponges...etc from these guys. I'd keep your filter, and add a canister - personal opinion. http://www.petsandponds.com/en/aquarium-supplies/c5809/c7359/p16366949.html
  8. Happy to help. In general, you want a filter that can "turn over" your tank 3-5 times per hour. Means more contact time for the filter to do its job. So for a 45 gallon, you'd want filtration that moves 135-225 GPH (gallons per hour). A whisper 40, with no media, at ideal running conditions has a GPH of about 210, which means that with filter pads etc...it's likely running much less. This filter is the bare minimum that you can run on your tank. 20-30 fish in a 45 Gallon would likely have a decent bioload, so you'd want to accomodate for that with over filtration. Just my 2 cents. Although, frequent water changes negate everything I've said above
  9. I just want to make sure I understand what you're asking. You have a Whisper 40 Power filter running on your 50 gallon tank. The air pump that died was just providing bubbles? The Whisper 40 is rated for 40 gallons, maximum...which is likely insufficient to turn over the volume of water you have. I'd look at either replacing the whisper (but keeping the media, or running both for awhile) with something stronger, or adding a secondary filter, such as an air driven sponge filter. My 55G has an Eheim 2215 cannister and a sponger filter for filtration. The airpump as a bubbler doesn't do much for the tank, realistically, the fall from the powerfilter provides sufficient surface disruption to oxygenate the plants/fishies.
  10. Thanks! I have pregnant labs, demasoni, blue shrimp, GBR and a betta making a bubble nest...and my wife is pregnant...something in the air we breathe?
  11. Technology is pissing me off. WTH! Youtube in read only mode when I want to upload a video of fish porn? I'm not impressed. ANYWAYS! I'm treating my tank for ICH, as my GBR female was infected (pretty badly). I upped the temp, dropped lots of salt and waited. All signs of ich are gone, but my ram was flashing on the bottom...or so I thought...both rams are rubbing themselves all over a group of eggs in my tank! Sadly, I think the angels will enjoy the additional snack, as I don't have anywhere else to put anybody right now. I hope not, and the rams are chasing everyone away from the corner. Either way, pretty cool - I'll post the video when youtube stops being broken. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f4TLV0fdXuo
  12. I've been following this... I also have a snail problem lmao

  14. Update on problem 1 : seems to be no adverse affects, and in fact, I have a berried blue panaque!!! So stoked. Update on problem 2 : the Ram is ich free (visibly anyways). I'll keep the salt and temp going for a few more days to be sure, then I'll do some PWC.
  15. Well, picked up the package at the depot today, got them home, and most seem to be swimming just fine. I'll know more when I add them to the tank, they are acclimating in a dark bucket. Also picked up some aquarium salt (I didn't have enough) to treat the GBRs, temp is up to 82. Not much room left on the heater to go though...
  16. That is BRUTAL! I'm still waiting for my next phone call from a supervisor to tell me she still doesn't know what's happening...fantastic. As for the pet store, I was seriously considering applying for a parttime job, just so I could try and provide some information to the staff, from the inside . Nice people, and try hard...but miss the boat on a lot of things...
  17. Hindsight is 20/20... I should have gone courier.
  18. YUP! I had them shipped to my office to avoid that old game... They've done that to me repeatedly on hardware orders...so for the livestock, I ordered them shipped to my shipping/receiving. Still failed. Still haven't had an update scan since they left Edmonton 24 hours ago.
  19. The shrimp are red rili and blue panaque. I also ordered some moss balls and plants, so if they are in the same bag, they should have something to pick at I hope. As for adding 10 fish, I thought it was all based on the current bio filtration? I added 5 small rams (inch, inch and a half?) and 5 angels (quarter-loonie body size, ones a little bigger). The filter came out of a well established 75, with lots of african cichlids and a couple plecos... Either way, for now, the bio filtration isn't leaving behind any nasties (knock on wood)...the water is testing good for all parameters they tested. The remaining fish are all active and eating...just one ram with spots. Temp is up to 81 as of lunch today.
  20. Problem 1. – I ordered Shrimp and plants from shrimpfever last week. Shipped out Wednesday with guaranteed delivery for Friday. Friday came and went, no shrimp. No updates on the Canada Post website, only scan showed the intake scan when Tommy dropped them off. (have lodged several complaints and investigations and I have supervisors checking in with me to tell me nothing.) Scanned on Sunday afternoon in Edmonton (they were supposed to call before forwarding along, and didn’t…someone in Edmonton was going to get free shrimp if they had). Sent this way on a truck at 5pm last night, still not here…problems with the truck apparently…GRRRRR Problem 2. – I went to LFS here and purchased 5 angels and 5 GBR on Tuesday. I added them to a fresh setup quarantine 29G. Water treated with prime at 1.5 dose. The tank ran with a powerhead for a couple days prior. I added an established filter off my 75G, and a brand new filter as well when intorucing the new fish. Wednesday morning, dead angel. Took fish back (with water sample), got replacement angel. Added to tank. Wouldn’t eat at night feeding, or morning feeding. Came home at lunch Thursday – dead angel (the replacement). Took back for store credit. One ram breathing heavy, not eating. Friday morning, one dead ram. Came home at lunch, another dead ram. Took back to store with water sample, and got store credit. They say no more credit/exchange. Have a disagreement about the cycling of a tank, and they tell me that it's water that holds the bacteria, and that even though I have no ammonia, nitrite and small amount of nitrate, it's not cycled. GRRRR. Currently have 4 angels, and 3 GBRs. One GBR now has white spots…@#$%!!!!! So so so happy I quarantined before adding to my 55G. Started raising the temp slowly, and having a debate on chemicals vs. salt to kick this thing. Other than getting rid of all things aquatic and getting another parrot…thoughts?
