  1. I have four goldfish of the common/comet variety. I use an Ehiem automatic feeder with them, and the fish are growing at different rates. Two are orange and two are white. The two white goldfish don't seem to be able to see the sinking pellets. The white ones know when food is out there and they are on the look out for it, but they will often swim past the sinking pellets. The orange ones never do this, if food is close by they grab it. Is it just a coincidence that two of my goldfish that don't see so well are white? Has anyone else noticed this?
  2. According to this link the City of Calgary uses sodium hypoclorite. http://www.calgary.ca/UEP/Water/Pages/Water-and-wastewater-systems/Water-treatment/Water-treatment-tour/Clarified-Water-Basin.aspx According to what I learned in pool operations as a lifeguard, sodium hypoclorite will raise the pH of water. Chloramines are formed when chlorine combines with organic substances as part of its disinfecting and oxidizing role. Chloramines still have some remaining disinfecting and oxidizing ability, but they are also what cause water to smell like chlorine.
  3. Thanks Jack. Multiple tank syndrome... Who tore up their house for new tanks?
  4. Hi everyone My name is Jill. I live in Calgary. After reading some of the posts on here, I have been laughing about posting my own experince. But here it is. I I set up a 10 gallon tank 2.5 years ago, and still have the same feeder fish I cycled that tank with. I was in a fish store on the weekend and saw that my feeders are about the size of pond comets that they had for sale. Pond comets sounds so much more respectable then feeder fish. I was feeling bad for my guys as they no longer have enough room to move around in the 10 gallon tank, and just picked up a used 36 gallon bow front aquarium. When I move the comets into the 36G tank. I think I will try keeping tropical fish in the 10G. I am planning to start with some live bearers, whatever I find that is the nicest to look at and the healthiest is where I will start. As I look around this website I see there are people here with increadable amount of experince and some goreous fish. I get the idea I am going to need more aquariums.
