For a very-quick-fix use Serran Wrap. cheap and effictive. Stops evaporation. Glass tops are the answer. No doubt about it.! You are on the move so much we can not keep track off u!!
  3. Welcome to Alberta Aquatica. From "nother L.A.er I have crossed the bridge many times. Same gopher hole on both sides :smokey: ( you have to be there to understand). Smokey
  4. JUST Wondering. _ just how salt do you need......
  5. Same here, last pic will not show... mmmmmmmm
  6. Thanks for posting. Good reference information. Smokey
  7. Excel, used as a recording media. I am still in 98-2. Is this what your are referening to. I have pages set up for : Water - when I produce it, quanity, the paramters of each batch [numbers], and any modifications necessary to achieve a pH, KH, GH; Each batch is given a code number[ date, etc]. Stock - each fish is entered; when purchased, from whom, observerations through out its life, diet, M/F, spawning, etc. Maintance on each tank: see pic Feeding - type of food, amount, etc. Water parameters on a tank - see pic. Notes. and for Breeding Fry and the list goes on and on. I Start a new page when more information is needed to be recorded [ entered]. Did I answer you question[??]. or do you need the excel program[??]. not that it can be copied and sent to you. Smokey
  8. Garhan; I used excel and just set the approiate coloms to suit the information I wanted to recodred/track. Here is a pic sample of one of the pages.
  9. BTW - people do not realize it, but the trim on a tank is worth more then the tank, in some case...lol. >>quote>>And why would building it back together take 20-25hrs? << time to completely disassemble a tank, not just reseal the inside. Smokey
  10. Because that is how long it seems to take to do a proper job.. New silicone will not adhere to old dirty silicone. Any surface contamination will not alow silicone to properaly adhere., etc.... It is not hard physical work, it is just time consuming! Sure a quick cover job can be done... however.... I have numerous 10 to 33 gallon tanks with either broken glass or leaks; Why- in most case I would rather spend the time building a brand new tank, than the hours to repair an old leaky tank. Working with glass is a bit more "risky" than any other type of material. Many friends have commented on how they ended up breaking a sheet of glass while repairing a leaker. :smokey: :smokey: Can you imaginge the cost of 12 square feet of 12 mil. glass x2 HTH Smokey
  11. Thanks for the update/information, Garhan. >>500 ml with a IV drip system attached to the bottle<< great DIY idea. :smokey: Ahhh - flyfishing in the springtime... Excellant idea   can't wait. Smokey
  12. Welcome to AaA. I'm sure you will enjoy your time here. Smokey
  13. Fishy, sounds like you will have enough media for the bio-bacterial to colonize. GH= 180 ppm & KH= 140 ppm = Carbonate and Gerneral Hardness Test kit. Both come in the same kit. Ca = 80 ppm = Calcium Test kit. Iron=0.0 ppm = Iron Test kit. All are available in the Master test kit by Hagen; or as individiually test kits. The Hagen Master Test kit also includes test kits for ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, phosphate, pH low, pH high. BUT_It sells for about $90.00 .... ouch!! Generally speaking the more important ones are the Nh3, NO2, NO3, and pH test kits. Especiall when setting up/ cycling a new tank. After a tank has matured, [ fully cycled and settled in], the pH and NO3 kits are the main test kits I use. HTH Smokey
  14. For $300.00, plus everthing extra - Good deal. Now, you have to deceide if repairing it _ is worth it. http://s6.invisionfree.com/AlbertaAquatica...view=getnewpost
  15. Yup !! & severums are very powerful/territorial when it come to their fry. Can you sneak in a egg-crate divider[??]. Nice looking male. How old is he[??]. Smokey
  16. FishManTy, your sorta between the rock and a hard place... :smokey: Two choices as i see it: 1) -repair it. or 2) - sell as a reptile, etc. tank. My reasoning: eight years as a professional tank builder. MPE _ It take's twice as much time to repair a tank as opposed to building a new one, especially if you have to disassemble the tank, first. To only remove all the surface silicone, clean up, prep and reseal a tank, about 5 to ten hours. Plus time to go to the doctors to get your index finger removed from your ear [ siliconed ]. :smokey: :smokey: j/k. To disassembel a tank, remove all the old silcone, clean, prep and then reassemble/silicone the tank ~20 to 25 hours. Plus, the chance a plate of glass may be broken !! Been there, done it.. As many members have expierenced / stated, repairing a leaking/broken tank is time comsuming. Plus you will need a dedicated work well ventulated area. Then there is the smell and mess...  ! If and I only suggest this as an alternative: SELL THE TANK, GRAB THE CASH AND GET A BRAND NEW ONE. I understand Gold's can get you a good deal. Smokey Just some suggestions, based on some of my expierences.
  17. Thanks Garhan. So, If I understand _ it "may" take 3 - 6 months for the plants to fully incorperate/create a "FULL-BIO"....[ best words I can come up with to say they start to stabilizr the tanks environment]. Could you give a bit more infor; about the type of lamps you are using on this setup / and how many. If fertilizers are necessary and when would you consdider using any. Smokey damm... my thumbs may be turning green :smokey:
  18. Sammy, is Wayne still breeding[??]. Smokey
  19. Good catch, FishManTy, RD. Nice to see someone has their eyes open.... Smokey
  20. Quote>>I have been testing my water everyday, no amnonia at all. I decided to test for nitrites, again nothing. So I then tested for Nitrates and came up with a reading of 5 ppm.<< Fishy: Keep on testing the water numbers. If you are getting NO3 readings and "NO' NH3 or No2's the tank's [ filter] has cycled. Congraudlation! OR - you may have NO3'S IN YOUR TAP WATER !! already. Have you tested the raw tap water.?? Always good to know the parameters of the water you use for the W/C's. EX: - Crowsnest Pass tap water numbers: pH= 8.4 GH= 180 ppm KH= 140 ppm Ca = 80 ppm Iron=0.0 ppm [ non-cleated and cleated tested] NH3- 0.0 ppm [ we are fortunate, no need for it]. Cholorine= 0.1 ppm [ we are fortunate] NO3= 0.0 ppm [ mountain water, nevery been used before]. :smokey: N02= 0.0 Depending on where you live in Edmonton, the tap water numbers can differ, [ different water sources are used for different parts of the city]. Keep us updated on the tank, Good luck.
  21. Cichlid88 - It sounds like an internal parisite. Not uncommon in discus that were raised in poor conditions.[ previous owneres]. How old is the discus?? Metro may be the soulution. However, Metro [metronidazole] is not for casual use. It is very powerful and demands attention. You will have to a "doctor". If you deceide to use Metro, I stongly suggest setting up a 10 gallon hosptial tank!! Trying to located Metro. - Generally, a vet. can supply you with metor , in pill form - 250 gram. You will convince the vet that you will be careful with the druq. I can give you much more information and a proceedure to administer the med. e-mail me if you like. Smokey I will help you as much as possible.
