  1. Addiction is the correct word! Welcome! I am also fairly new to the site and this group is great!
  2. This is Skylar's "It wasn't me!" expression... now notice garbage torn apart behind her.
  3. Welcome... good luck keeping the twins out of the tanks. I have teenagers, some days I would like to weigh them down in the tanks. Kim. :hey:
  4. Thanks for all the great info, I read through everything. I still need to know how to tell the two apart. I put the pics together that RD posted in this thread but I really cannot see any features that make it obvious one is Ahli and one is Fryeri. Any ideas?
  5. I have put in hours of searching the web to find the difference between Sciaenochromis ahli and Sciaenochromis fryeri. What I have found is that some people say they are the same, one "formerly known" as the other. I have looked at countless pictures and even ran across a couple that were labeled as male on one site and female on the other. Now I am just plain frustrated. I have a couple of fish I purchased as Ahli but now I am questioning what exactly it is I have in the tanks. This whole excercise started because I was trying to find out what a female looked like and how to tell them apart from the other Malawi cichlids I have. :boxed: Can anyone steer me to reference material or a website that can be trusted for true and accurate information on this species. Thanx! Kim.
  6. I am so jealous of people who are great artists. To date I can draw the entire stickman family... been working a year on stickdog <sigh> Beautiful work.
  7. We just went to a Landscape place by my work in South Edm. Picked up 2 buckets (about 80lbs) for under $40. I priced out the 3 LFS and it would have cost me between 125-200 dollars. :boxed: Thank you everyone for your help. Looks like I have some cooking and wshing to do. LOL.
  8. Yopu guys are the best, thank for your help. Now I all that extra money I'm saving can go to more tanks. Yahoo!
  9. I have been poking around looking at slate for my African tanks. The price of slate seems to vary all over the board. My question is: what is the difference if I go to a lanscape company and buy bulk slate compared to what they sell in the aquarium stores? Is there a difference in the density of the rock that makes one kind different? I was in Big Al's and they tag their slate as colors (Red, Green and Black) but no mention of type. I know, I know... blazing newbie question... I just don't want to spend a stupid amount of cash for something I can buy at the local rock shop.
  10. Thanks Vapor, you're ok... even if you are from Calgary.
  11. Hello back to everyone. This is a great site. I have lots of questions to ask over the next little while. Im suffering a bit of info overload... a fish is a fish... WHATEVER! :chair: Still trying to figure out which fish will play nice together in my tanks. :boxer: C U around!
  12. Hello everyone, I am from Edmonton. I am a mom of 2 teenagers and my new husband is a fish freak. My fish experience has been a table top betta bowl and thats about it. My house now has a fish tank in every corner. I decided to see what the big deal was... after all a fish is a fish right? :bang1: WELL, a couple of trips to the local pet stores and my interest was peaked. This weekend we went to Calgary and I was introduced to Golds. I am a newly certified cicilid nut. We came back with a van full of ciclids. My almost empty tanks have color and life. Now I wander the house looking for empty corners that can fit tanks. I am glad to find this site and hope to learn more. Myk.
