I walk into Ocean city while they are unloading a shipment from Shri Lanka. They have a mantis so I buy it. I have never seen this species before and think it was a O. Havensis then later a O. cultrifer. I later get an email from Dr. Roy Caldwell (Berkley University) saying it is neither but an O Japonicus which Dr. Roy himself has never seen a live species and needless to say wants it. Should I -trade him for a different species? -sell it to him? -loan it to him for studies -keep it for myself... I respect Dr. Roy and like his work a lot and would like to help him out, however me and a rare mantis is cool as hell....sooo. what do I do? I know I should do the right thing here but it is killing me It is the most intensely colored mantis I have ever seen. Bright pink, blue and Yellow

The octopus is cheap. $30 or so. It is the equipment to care for it that will kill you. They are expert only animals. (sorry I hate saying that as I am far from an expert) it is true though. they are tough

I would respond to the oscar statement, but the Ray is dead so lets get on with life. I do feel badly for it though and was curious about the size of the tank, the other inhabitants and filtration if you don't mind sharing

Brad I would assume Paul will use this as Salt. Paul, Only suggestion i would have it have a chamber for filter floss, or padding. I know nobody uses it for salt, but I personally think if you have it, it will keep your water way clearer and if you toss it regularily the nitrate build up will be minimal. If you don't use the floss all the time it still wouldn't hurt to thow an egg crate baffle in there for the times you need it. Just my thoughts

My rays will frequent the top of the tank for a swim in the powerhead current, or the bubbler. If this is there is a source this could be it. Also though if they are using canister filters and have no other surface agitation I would get some. My male Henlei has a bizarre behavior after an hour of no bubbler. He will go up to the top of the tank and then flatten out and curl his disc like he is dead. I am positive it is a lack of oxygen that makes him do this as you can literally grab him and he wont move. Turn on the air bubbler and he goes down again. Rays especially big rays need highly oxygenated water due to ammonia intolerance and so I would make sure there is a ton in there. I have always said you could stick a knife through a ray and it will live, but mild ammonia will kill it in a heart beat! :banned:

K the male sucks granted but the female is amazing and active for a motoros. If I had a spare tank I would get her.

Actually I was mad because my octo got the food t quickly withut coming out. My kids screaming and having fun is something I would never give them crap about.

I got a breeding pair of Henlei. I have been holding out and yes I have a pair. I lost 2 pups DOA.... Hopefully they get better with time. I think I have been guided in the right direction and the next ones do betterl :beer:
