Damn...short notice and same day as the opening day of the big Red Deer reptile expo/sale....gonna have to pass on this one.
-
Very cool...and congrats, that is a great little pup.
-
Yes, but the 'real' ones (high-quality) sell for $200+....and they do sell...the 5 we had in Riverfront recently at $280 each took less than 4 weeks to all sell...as did the previous 6 at $225 each.
-
Betta pugnax are, at least, regularly available...and about $10-$12 each. These are not colourful, but quite large (4"-5") and impressive.
-
Prohibited from possession in most US states and Ontario, prohibited from import into the USA, perfectly legal in Alberta.
-
They do...they own the Edmonton franchise.

Eheim classic canisters or Fluval FX5 (no other model) for me....I have also had good success with PennPlax Cascades...I do not like the New Marineland canisters, though.
-
Overwintering works well, but your pond needs to be deep enough...in Calgary, that translates as 40"+, on Edmonton's north end, ii is more like 54"+....I cannot imagine what Fort Mac would need...probably at least 72". You really should go get the other fish...it sounds like you may be their only hope.

I have 2 each of the 1000, 1200, and 1500 models, and like them all quite well.

Agreed the KMnO4 is the best way to go, although alum works quite well (I find that 2 tsp/1.5L works very well on snails with a 1 hour dip) as well. Copper is nasty stuff that I would not want even the tiniest residue if in my aquaria.

Agreed with snaggle, and likely the only one that would even stand a chance would be the raph.
-
Great tanks...very impressive, but far from cheap.
-
If it is actually a full 6"+ from snout to caudal peduncle, yes, they can fetch upwards of $200 each, although $100-$120 would be more realistic.
-
Correct...I have seen this size go for as little as $15 and as much as $45. Christian

Brilliant shots, and some great-looking corals!
-
I have no experience mixing the two, so it could work, but with caution.
-
Leaf fish could work, as would leopard Ctenopoma.
-
Congrats, Tammy! I would not be surprised if a couple-few fry did not make it, actually...unless something seriously predates them.
-
Sure, a good canister will work, just not as efficiently or well as a sump.
-
The ones down at the shop get big feeder guppies every 3-5 days...takes them no time to inhale them all.
-
Seios...the only brand I would suggest.
-
For softs, you should be able to get away with a dual-tube HO T5 unit, although a third tube would not hurt....this would be a mite less spendy than a halide unit, although a dual CF, 250w halide would be ideal.

Temperature having an effect on gender determination is true in at least some fish, and many lizards....to the extent that one can incubate certain lizard/crocodilian eggs at a specific temp and come out with all male, all female, or a split of both. I am not certain to what degree temperature may effect Xiphophorus gender determination in fry, but I will have a look.
