duff
. Duff - If I go to Aquagiant (I probably will), I will definitely PM you and let you know what I think. And I thought the old Centenial Mall became Medowlark, or am I mistaken? You're right, there is a Superpet in Mayfield Common but last I saw it was still in the process of closing. Doesn't matter, I'll actually be in Mayfield Common tonight so I'll drive by and check. I'd rather not buy anything there though. Pretty sure centenial mall = mayfield common and the super pet at mayfield common became sportchek.... and opened in the parking lot of the Walmart by anthony henday on stony plain road and is now becoming petsmart which is weird because I thought superpet was a PJ's with another name on it
Tanker
Big Al's sells the Elite Mini, I have bought several from there over the years. Great little filters, and even half useful for smashing Co2 bubbles for bigger tanks.
EowynJane
Duff - You're right, Superpet is PJ's sister store so I'm not sure what is going on there. Maybe they just sold off that part of the company to Petsmart? I was in Mayfield common and I forgot to look! Gee whiz. Tanker - I thought I had looked in BA's but maybe I just missed them. Is that filter adjustable? And well suited to a 2.5? I still haven't decided what exactly I'm going to put in the tank so I'd like the option of turning the filter right down if need be. Stacey
Jane- the Elite Mini's are adjustable....... on maximum you'll easily feel the water movement on the opposite side of the tank, on minimum, you won't feel much at all. They are a great little filter. (rated for a 1-3 gallon tank volume)
EowynJane
Thanks for all the tips.. I haven't made it out yet. Had a killer week at work, bleh. Will get it this week for sure.
fishguru
Both Lees and Penn Plax make cartridge type air run filters with carbon. They work quite good for smaller tanks, I use them myself. Baby guppies and bettas are safe with them. Most stores will carry one type or the other, somewhere around $5-7. Even those old corner filters that you put the wool and carbon in yourself, work reasonably well, I still have a few of those in use as well. Kayen
i see the elite minis at londonderry pj's all the time... im looking for a filter for my 2.5 right now as well... would prefer external. DIY sponge filter could work alright depending on how well you make it...(unlike mine which isnt that good..)
Finbert
Big Al's does have mini filters - they're up at the front with all the betta bowls and mini-aquaria. If you're facing the till, they're on the right-hand side of that shelf. I know because I just got one this weekend: a Deco Art Nano Filter from Red Sea brand. it's good up to 3Gal, and cost (I think) $14.99. On its low flow setting it's quite gentle and doesn't bother my timid new betta. I'd post a picture but the usb cord from my camera is elsewhere. Tanker
Oh, and I should take a moment to mention that there is a nano canister on the market right now BUT DO NOT BUY IT!!! I think it's by Tom's and the only place I have seen them is at Trident in Edmonton. i bought two and they both broke in the exact same place - right at the fitting where the output from the can goes to the hose. Not kind as it then proceeds to pump the tank's contents on the floor. Luckily I trust nothing, and had the canisters sitting in a tote next to the tanks until they proved themselves (usually do this will all canisters for the first couple months - especially with Chinese crap). The totes caught the water, which is handy, but it still left 2 gallons of 'not being filtered' water in my 10 gallon tanks I had them running. Needless to say, the fish were NOT happy. The filters are rated for up to ten gallons, but I could see them doing a good job on a 5 gallon, or a great job on a 2.5, etc. I had them running on 'spit tanks' so more for the airation than the filtering due to the frequent water changes. VERY poorly built overall, it is amazing how much noise a little filter like this can make, included media is garbage, and all in all NOT worth the $35. Great idea, but far from ideal. Toirtis
ZooMed also makes a mini-canister, although it is marketed as a 'turtle filter' (Turtle clean 501: http://www.zoomed.com/html/filters.php ) pretty much identical to the TOM one ( http://www.tomaquarium.com/webfiles/produc...ercanister.html ) ...I have not heard any bad reviews for the ZooMed one, so it may be worthwhile. I have been using the Azoo Mignon filters ( http://www.aquaessentials.co.uk/bmz_cache/...age.500x500.jpg ) myself for a while and find that they do the job quite well enough for a 2-3 gallon tank with a couple of bettas and a snail or two. Another option is the old standby air-driven sponge filters....which do take up space, but are great filters (and are usually available at most shops). http://www.teachingmaterials.at/catalog1/images/208905.jpg http://www.aquaticbiotope.co.uk/ProdImages...ter%20BM104.jpg http://cichlidresearch.com/gifs/simpleaqua...er_DSC_4947.jpg http://www.e-aquarium.com.au/images/Fry_Sp...rium_Filter.JPG

Pricey though however.
Vallisneria
I have a mini rapids canister on my 20g and really like it. I've only had it up and running maybe 6 months but so far it sowrking great.
Finbert
Here's a pic of the Red Sea nano filter in action in my 2.5gal: On its lowest setting, the hygro on the other side don't move. Its highest setting makes the hygro sway gently.
