Slough Shark
I'm going to breed convicts so that I can feed my leaffish without spending $30 a month. I just wanted to know if they have any really specific needs to breed? Or do I just throw a male in with a female and I have babies.
Qattarra
That about covers it ...male+female+water , yup that's it, 20 gal is all they need. As long as there are places for the maturing fry to hide from the parents when the parents lay a new batch of eggs, they can remain in the same tank. Keep in mind the males esp. will defend eggs/fry, you will get bit if you stick your hand in there lol.
Slough Shark
Thanks Sue. Do they have teeth lol?
Fish_Frenzy
My breeding male was so mean when they had eggs/fry he ripped holes in any net I put in there...but someone had to control the amount of babies those 2 had! 20G, eggs, 9 day old fry and 1 day free swimmers all at the same time! Tammy
fatpuffer
I remember having convicts as my first cichlid. I put them in a four gallon holding tank and bred there. They never ate the babies and they kept laying eggs in the tiny tank. I eventually got rid of them because of their aggressive nature in the big tank. Slough Shark
Wow, I guess I'll have to keep them locked up when I go in to collect the free swimmers for Leaf Fish food! I was planning on giving them a 20 gallon Rubbermaid container with sponge filters to breed in. I have no more room for new tanks!!!! I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work. Should I keep it bare bottom or use some sand in it?
fatpuffer
I will be easier if its barebottom. You can just syphon the fry without worrying about substrate. I you want, you can even just take the pot that they laid their eggs in and put it in the leaf fish tank. A small bubbler will keep it nice and aerated. Once they turn to wigglers, your leaf fish can just eat them. Js
Slough Shark
Yeah that could work, but unless the Convicts are producing like 50 fry a month, I would need to let the fry grow up a bit before feeding to the Leaf.
grapeape
50 fry a month is definitely not a problem
Slough Shark
Wow these must be some horny fish lol!
Qattarra
In the wild they are a feeder fish, that's why they lay so many eggs, you needs hundreds in order to have a few survive to breed.
Slough Shark
That would certainly make sense. I like the synodontis method of survival better though! I am very happy that these fish will produce so much food for my malayan Leaf Fish!! Thanks for all of the help and advice everyone. super fish
if you want ones that arent as mean you can go with hunuran red points (they only have about 30 fry each time though, unlike the 50 convicts have) But ya they breed just as easy.
