Blue crays breeding

I was originally going to post the question, "how do you know male from female?" I looked at two of them that I have and noticed ones claws were longer and that one was also somewhat bluer.

So I added the female (shorter claws) into the males tank and observed ready at a moments notice to pull them apart if they fought, as I know they'll kill each other if given the chance. At first discovery of each other it was a fight so I pushed them apart. They circled the tank and she became the aggressor. In less than 5 minutes of introduction they were "feeler-ing" each other up. She then chased him until he caught her. It was NASTY but she quickly stretched herself out, arching her back. He grasped her claws and held them firm. This was missionary position . It was like a willing rape. Their tails twitched a bit and they remained locked together for at least 5 minutes or more. I wasn't worried anymore that he might eat her as their heads were held apart. I even reached in and moved them closer to the glass, they wouldn't release each other lol, kinda funny, "let no woman put asunder". Once they released she resumed trying to get out so I moved him to the smaller tank leaving her in the more roomy 10. (hoping she'll need the space :) ). They are both at 4 inches and just under a year old. I hope to see eggs soon and possibly babies. Next time I'll have a camera and I'll take pictures or even a short movie.

Sue, that reads a little bit like crayfish porn...

And I'm a little shocked that you are condoning crayfish incest!

Congrats on getting them to breed without any casualties. The father of that batch still has one claw smaller than the other after his lady ripped it off when they were younger.

The courting you witnessed may not immediately result in a brood of eggs as she was receiving a sperm package that she can store and use at her own discretion at any point in the future (not sure if there is a best before date on that package). Good luck on getting a spawn and even better luck on finding ways to get rid of them! I'm sure I still have close to fifty lurking around the bottom of one of my 120Gs.

LOL I agree, that's why I referred to it as "nasty".

I would much prefer getting a new bloodline to work with . This was so fascinating though, I had to try. I will get pics next time so I can share with other "voyeurs" of fauna interactions:)

That would be awesome to see..very educational! Aww who am I kidding I think it would be neat to watch the whole play up to mating, like to see what kind of interaction they have when first meeting occurs. Good luck!

From their point of view...no large cichlids that might eat them , but certainly any fish small enough and that falls asleep that they can handle and feed from. They are cannibalistic and the strongest eventually will be the only one left.

They definitely can and will catch fish. I had to put some into the cray tank I had during an emergency tank problem and lost 2 ottos and 2 platies to the little bugger. Boy was he ever happy.
