kimax
I recently acquired a 56 gallon tank with an overflow and a sump system. I am wondering what size of pump I need as the pump was not included with the system. It will be used for a freshwater Tanganyika tank. Any thoughts are appreciated. Boom
What size are the drain and return lines? Your gonna want to try to match gph drain to gph return.
rocker85675
depends on the size of the tank. my 90 has a 1800 gph and my 135 has a 2400 gph pumps, both magdrive. when it comes to turning water to much is just right. (i have a fx5 on a 33 gal)
Sean Westle
You will be fine with a 500gph pump unless you are overstocking
rocker85675
mfk just did a servey and 80%(i believe) said they shoot for a ten times an hour turnover. (if its a 100 gal tank, 1000gph pump) but remember, you lose ALOT of pressure through 90* elbows, ballvalves and headheight. my 90"s 1800gph pump is NOT pushing 1800gph to the tank, after my seastorm, uv sterilizer, 90*'s and headheight thiers prob only about 1400 gph going to the tank, and im using a 2" return line. as long as the fish ar'nt slamdancing in your tank and thiers slow current spots to chill in too much circulation is just right, GO BIG!
kimax
Oh jeepers! This is more difficult than I thought it would be. The output spout is 5.5 feet above the sump. The drain pipe are 1.5 inches and the return lines are 3/4inch PVC piping. I don't know if this is good or bad, this is what I got. I am shooting to get a 600 gph pump so based on what everyone wrote, I am thinking this should be adequate?? (I am not new to fishkeeping, but plumbing is a new realm for me)
