geleen
so i recently moved 5 of my discus upstairs into a 70 tank.little did i know i had a pair. i had 15 in a 115. sold a few moved some into the 70g. so yesterday a few were cleaning a piece of wood, and there tubes were down. today they have laid eggs. should i move they remaining 3 discus back downstairs? will it distrupt the tan kto much? not to much chasing, there is also tatras, rams in the tank as well? will they eat all there eggs or be good parents> gina these are 2 i got from you? the smaller powder blue and the large meanie!!! that have paired off. do they stay a couple now??? Several things to consider: 1:/ they will likely have several goes at it and will likely eat the eggs within a day or 2. And they should be separated as the eggs or fry will not survive in a community tank. 2./ In order to have viable eggs and healthy fry the temp should be 88F 3./ PH will need to be lowered to have a higher hatch rate;likely to 6.5 4./ Kh and Gh should be below 6 In Alberta that would mean mixing 60 70 % RO with tap water Once you have fry you will need to change75 -90 % with pre heated water daily, in a bare bottom tank. Good luck and have fun John
finaddict
wow 88'F water is at 84 now. and no ro water. they are being great parents- keeping all other fish away. will keep eggs in tank for now.
firestorm
Congratulations Connie  If this is their first spawn, they might eat the eggs. But I wouldn't worry about it because this just means it is the start of something good. They might not even getting their parenting skills right until the 3rd or 4th try. Discus will protect their eggs and young from predators just like most other cichlids, and they apparently make pretty good parents. I know the young will eat the slime coat off the parents for the first little while after hatching. I would probably leave the other discus right where they are at, just because I know how finicky they can sometimes be with changes. The other fish will probably try to eat the eggs, but that is normal. Once discus pair off, they will stay a pair and breed with each other.
