robin
I use just gravel in my tanks and when I siphon it weekly there is lots of stuff! The water always looks fine until I stir up the gravel when vaccuming it out....so I figured, obviously the poo and etc. has to come out! So....question is, if you have sand, how do you clean it? jvision
The crap doesn't get down into the sand very easily - it pretty much stays on the surface, and it's easy to siphon out.
loki
you can clean it the same. just keep the gravel vac off from the surface of the sand. being so compact, sand allows more "dirt" to be picked up by the filter
gobies et al
I have coarse sand in my brackish tank as my Dragon Goby loves to send sand flying and rearrange his tank. For that tank, I have the end of the python draining into a bucket sitting in a bathtub to collect any sand sucked up.
Qattarra
Every 3rd cleaning I stir up the sand with my fingers. It's just enough to release the gunk but not enough to whip it up. I give it 20 minutes to settle on the sand surface and then just suck it up . You might be overfeeding if you always have a lot of stuff to clean up . I know this because I'm guilty of doing it too lol .
