You can use lava rock - pick it up at Canaar, or in the BBQ section of Can. Tire, HD, etc. The one problem with lava rock is that over the course of many years, they will clog. Although if you have good mechanical filtration before the lava, you won't have as much clogging - they'll just clog w. lava particles as the rocks break down over time.
