odd texas cichlid behaviour

so aside from my short body pair, i have 3 young female and one male 'regular' texas cichlids. The male paired up with one of the females about a week ago, staked out a cave, and a couple of days ago they layed eggs. My tank has several caves...about a foot away another female has started to go into breeding colors and clear out a cave ...the odd thing is that the male is pairing with her as well! ..he is helping clear the cave out with her and doing the mating ritual rubbing etc...not agression ...he is over twice her size and if he wanted her gone he would have no problem doing so, prior to this he chased her away.

he spends his time going between the two females. and chasing off the remaining female has been shunned to the corner.

Has anyone seen this behaviour before ?
