Baos
A really bad smell sometimes means h2s. There are a few other types of wood that would also be unacceptable for a tank such as pine and cedar. pine contains turpentine. cedar contains anti-fungals. cedar when rotting under the water can smell really bad. Also a strong wood smell means wood oil which is toxic to your fish. tannins however(dark water coloration) are harmless.
