new pond

If your pond is 4' deep, you should be OK. To keep some form of gas exchange, you may want to put some straw that extends through the ice. I know a few people who keep their 2' ponds going all year - one has an over-sized pump and just runs it (waterfall, stream and all) through the winter; the other shuts the main pump off, but puts a bubbler in the pond. As long as water keeps moving, it won't freeze.

Mine are staying outside this year (10 goldfish & 4 koi). Brought the ones I had last year in for the winter and they all died off. My pond is just under 4' deep, I'll shut off the waterfall, disconnect the tubing from one of my pumps to keep the water circulating and put in a floating de-icer.
