jackel38
Thx for ur input man I figure my filter have at most a year to 3 left but as they go maybe I'll start looking at the eheim series I know they cost less a year to run by almost half and over all output is a higher percentage thx again
BigWater
From what I've seen ehiem still can't touch the amount of media you can put into a FX5 and the self priming feature is worth having incase your power goes out. Danzig
Ive been using the Rena Xp's for the past 6 yrs and have had no problems. I've never owned an Eheim or Fluval but have read alot of negative feedback about Fluval which prevents me from buying one. I hear nothing but good things about Eheim except the price tag. I myself will continue to buy the Rena Filstar XP's whenever i need canisters because theyve always been good to me and the prices are near dirt cheap in comparison to the other good brands. I still have my first rena xp3 which is 6 yrs old and has never broken down or caused me any greif. I would suggest them, unless of course money is no object in which case you could spring for an Eheim.
jvision
I have run most brands of canisters over the years, and this is my take: If you're looking at a Fluval *05, it might be worth it to save a few bucks and go with Cascade. A few better features, and I haven't experienced the problems as with a Fluval; but, overall a very similar canister. In its size class, you can't beat Ehiems for biomedia capacity - they're great, they're quiet, well built... but, you pay for what you get. I am currently running an Fluval FX5 on my 120 planted tank, and I quite enjoy it - it pushes lots of water, and has great filtering capacity; plus, it's easy to modify - I've changed the intake line to hard PVC, and will soon do the same for the return (make a spraybar), plus you can almost double the filtering capacity with a little work. If you're on a budget, I'd pick a Rena XP over a Fluval; but, if you have a big tank (100gal+), I'd go with the FX5.
