Good Tank Heater, And Heater Questions

New hose and clamps are cheap at Totem and Rona. Some people say they get better flow through smooth tubing than the ribbed Fluval tubing, as well.

Just get the clear stuff - I think Rona and Totem sell it by the foot; Home Depot only sells in 10' lengths.

If you don't think you'll get the right size when you're there, just bring the fitting w you.

I have been using Jager and never had any issues with them so far. Currently I have 2 300 W in 180 gal and the water temp stays quite accurate. I especially like the fact that their surface area is relatively bigger, allowing better heat transfer rate.

From what i know as the heaters age they are more prone to causing issues. Some hobbiest with very expensive fish prefer changing them at certain time intervals. The important thing is that the heaters don't actually adjust themselves for the water temp, rather they are adjusted for their internal temp. Depending on the temp difference between the water and the heater, heat transfer rate differs. Another component that will greatly impact the rate is the convection rate. So if you set your heater at the far corner of your acuarium where there is no current for the desired water temperture and move it close to the current later on, that can cause higher temp. all of a sudden.

Another contributer is the ambient temperature and other heat sources, such as direct sun light. If the malfunction occured during the night time, I am assuming it wasn't any hotter than normal temp in your place. If your temp dropped down when the house is a lot colder i would assume the problem be the ambient temperature, but while the outside temp is steady or going down, your water temp shouldn't go up.

Readjusting the heater might work for you so i f i were you i would give it a try. But if you dont want to risk your fishies readjust until you get a new heater, my preferance Jager.

So its day 5 with the Hydor inline heater 200W in my 55 gal, works like a charm, stays at 78F where I set it at. Not sure how many times it kicks on and off, never payed much attention to that. but well worth the $75 investment, and the price of the hosing which I bought a bit too small as far as I.D dimension is concerned, but with a bit of heat and muscle the hose is on, might just be a little more difficult to take the hose off, but with a bit of heat it will slide right off.

Thanks everyone for the help!

Hey, hows your inline heater working? I was thinking of getting a Hydor 200W inline heater for a 20 gallon tank. It says that the heater is good for 25-50 gal, it should still be ok for a 20 gallon tank right? I am planning on using it with a XP1 canister filter. Just starting setting up for shell dwellers.

I cooked a hydor heater once. Very reduced flow through the canister filter. Hydor sent me a new one after I submitted a picture of it with the cord cut off. Hydor rules!

My second choice is Jäger and then the chrome looking hagens. They all have been good to me. Haven't had a problem with a heater since I stopped cheaping out. Worth the extra money.
