New To Angels, Need Advice

1. I have some Angels I bought at the auction. They're 3 young marbles, and I had to acclimate them to my water slowly since they were in R/O water. They're in a 5g temporarily. I have to move some fish around in my other tanks so they'll be happier in the 55g. This is something I was going to do anyway, just in more of a hurry to do it this week, cause I don't want the Angels in the 5g too long. I would like to ask, how long will they be alright in the 5g? One looks about 1 1/2 inches, and the other two look about 2 inches (this is including their tall fin spans). If they're alright in there until Saturday night, then I can take more time moving everything around nicely, instead of hurrying to get it all done tomorrow.

2. Along with my Angels, I'll be moving my Multies to my 55g. Will this pairing be alright? The Muties are shell dwellers, and don't stray from their shells often. With them staying on the bottom, and hiding in their shells when needed, I think they should be okay. It says in my sig I have Kribs in the 55g. They'll be moved to the 20g, so they can be on their own (the two younger males will stay in the 55g until they find a new home, which I'm working on. Their aggression isn't too bad yet since they're still young and have no mates). I've been thinking of rehoming most or all of my Multies as well, so if that would solve the problem, I'm good to do that.

3. How many of the 3 angels could I keep in the 55g? It's enough room for 1 (I think, correct me if the info I read was wrong), but I'm not sure about the other 2. No idea how to tell their sex, and I know they can be aggressive when older. I was planning on rehoming one of them for sure, but if needed I'll rehome 2.

I'll admit, I should have been more prepared before I bought these, but I've been seriously thinking about buying some for awhile now, so kinda just jumped in. Though I didn't actually think I'd get them at $5, cause I wasn't going to try outbidding someone. If I made a horrible mistake in buying these by not having a proper set-up, they will be finding new homes. Not gonna keep them if it's bad for them. I've grown attatched to them already, and spent 5 hours acclimating them to my water, so I'm hoping they can stay.

My fave two! The other one doesn't have as much black and white contrast, but still pretty. Though it seems to hate my phone, cause I didn't get a single good pic of it lol

Edit: After looking at the pic, I'm thinking I might be a bit off about the sizes...

angels are actually quite hardy and will do fine in most set ups. They do get large so 3 in a 55 is aproaching the upper stock limit depending on dither +plants +decorations etc, 2 will be fine.(good rule of thumb here is 10 gallons per 1 adult fish) if you get lucky and have all three the same sex aggression will not be bad, or you may end up with male + female in which case the odd fish out will need to be re-homed once they pair or they will certainly kill it.

sexing them is a difficult at that size, when they get bigger it is easy to see. When viewed from the side male faces have a very straight line from dorcel fin to mouth, females have an angular line (indented) from dorcel fin to mouth. males also tend to have slightly larger lips on them for fighting indicitive of all cichlids.

they will be fine in just about any water you place them in, hardness, ph, yada yada... they like warmer water. high 70's to low 80's F. more important than water parameters is consistency of water parameters.

they do well when fed small meals several times a day.

they will hunt just about anything that you put in with them that is not another cichlid, and they have a taste for live plants.

happy angel keeping!

In a pinch they can do all right in the five gallon for a couple weeks if necessary, they're pretty hardy fish and will still grow out once you move them. I don't see any problems with the multies, half the fun of fish keeping is all the mixing and matching combos, sometimes seeing what works is trial and error as long as no one gets seriously hurt lol.. just be sure and plan ahead who gets moved if it doesnt work out. I personally would have no problems keeping all three in the same fifty five gallon that way you'll know if you have a pair later on. In my opinion there is plenty of room there. They do love plants but really mostly to pick and taste, i've never noticed them decimate a planted aquarium. Vals are a particular favourite as well as amazon swords for breeding etc. Scalare angels are a lot less fussy than Altum or Leopoldi angels.

good luck and have fun

Thank you both! I'm glad I'm able to take my time moving them, and that I don't have to find new homes for the multies yet. Good that half my tank is Vals (about 30-50), they should love their new home when I move them this Saturday! :D
