55 gallon as Growout for 125 gallon

As per the title my plan is to set up two new tanks in my place. The main tank I want to set up is a 125 gallon and use a 55 gallon as a growout tank for fish smaller than those in the big tank.

The fish I want to keep in the 125 gallon include:

Nimbochromis Venustus (maybe 3-5)

Cyrtocara moorii (~5 or so)

Dimidiochromis Compressiceps (1)

Protomelas spilonatus (Sulphurhead) (2-3 maybe more)

Frontosas (2-3) - I know not fitting in with the Malawi theme

Not sure about any other fish?

My question is not so much about the 125 gallon, but the 55 gallon. I should have the 55 gallon set up shortly. The 125 gallon may be a few more months down the road. If I buy some of these fish as juveniles (1-2") can they be kept in the 55 gallon for 3-4 months?

I would probably put the Fronts straight into the big tank and not keep them in the 55 at all.

They'll be fine for 3-4 months in a 55 gallon tank at that size. The frontosa will be OK there too. You will find that they will have more difficulty competing for food with the quicker Malawi's however. HTH.

Using the 55 as a grow should be fine for all except the frontosa. They are best kept in larger groups of 5+ (2 males and at least 3-4 females) as the males tend to be very hard on females. The dom male will single out the other fish.

Other wise should be fine!!!!

Thanks for the replies. I'll have to think about the Frontosas a little more, maybe just one, and watch closely to be sure it is eating well. Now I just need to wait for my Condo Boards decision to ok the 125 gallon tank.

IMO you'd be much better off just leaving the front's out. They're so different from the others behaviour-wise that they really just don't fit in, even just one.

Thanks, maybe I'll reconsider the Fronts then... I'll try to think of some other centrepeice fish for that tank.
