What is the name of the maufacturer? When it comes to LED lighting there is a lot of garbage out there so be careful? especially with some of the overseas stuff... If I were you I would stick with AI or Radion unless you are just using the LED lighting for simple lighting needs in a fish only tank.

Cree LED types? Two thoughts, did they make the circuit properly to protect the LEDS and can you adjust the power so that they don't use the full 3w? Both of these things will help improve LED lifespan. I read that driving these high power LEDS at their max halfs their life because any minor power spikes that occur will be that much closer to that point of degradation.

Aside from durability, etc, if it is as you say then OVERKILL by a factor of wayyyy. I think a 100 watts for a 36 gallon of LED light would be plenty based upon an average of 80 lumens / watts, but 240...
