johnsmith
I have two questions re: a temporary solution - 1. Can a plastic yogurt container be used as a temporary pot? 2. How long can you leave plants uprooted, floating in your tank? Edited January 18, 2006 by johnsmith
Tanker
I'll say 1) yes, make sure it's washed well and rinsed even better to remove any food/detergent. 2) as long as there are nutrients in the water column then the roots will be able to feed... but the plant may grow other roots from the stem to try and anchor itself... depends on the plant, specifically. johnsmith
Thanks Tanker, don't worry this container has been used for water changes for as long as I can remember. I figured it would be okay as a short-term pot but I wanted to double check. Since I can use that I don't have to worry about floating plants
johnsmith
It turns out I have more plants than I realized. My assumption is that any containers we use for food should be fine in a tank. But, I like second opinions so would the bottom of a 2L pop bottle be okay as a temp. pot? thanks again
Tanker
As long as there is no glue residue on the bottle from the label, you'll be fine. Can't say if the glue would be 'bad' exactly, but I'm certianly not going to say it would be 'safe' of course.
johnsmith
Thanks, I'll be sure to cut below the glue.
johnsmith
Now that I'm thinking about this, would it be okay to use plastic pop bottles as permanent pots? I like the idea of having some plants in pots but I don't like the idea of having those large, orange, ceramic pots all over my tank. A clear pop bottle would be much more inconspicuous. I could poke some holes in the bottom so roots can expand. What do you think?
trixie
I used the bottom of a coke bottle for planting worked great put some profile in with a little gravel on top .
