TroyGrey
Another "Newbee" I'm in the final planning stages of building a tank. The dimensions are 48"x16"x16" (53.9 Gallons) Out of 1/4 inch glass. I'll be adding 2 top cross braces. Now what I'd like to know is; Are frameless tanks safe as framed? or should I add top and bottom aluminum Frames? Is the glass thickness I picked O.K.? Mighty Prawn
I'm pretty sure 1/4" is fine. As for the framing, I do not know. -Hideo
AndyL
http://www.garf.org/tank/BuildTank.asp Acording to the calculator - 1/4" is fine. Andy

discus
yes the frame does add strength to a tank but it is not nessary since you have two cross pieces ,But you should add one in the middle just to stop any bowing that will occure. I have built many tanks over the years with out frames and i have never had a problem with any of them because i added the three cross pieces hope that helps James Edited February 1, 2006 by discus
