I will most likely be using the stock canopy hood, and would like to have a few corals in the tank as well. The standard 10 gal frame is only 20" so that rules out a lot of your 24" Power Compact or T5 fixtures. Compact flourecents in a standard incandecent hood will allow you to keep some things. Zoanthids, mushrooms and some soft corals will do okay. Basically anything that that is marked okay under NO or normal output flourecent in your favorite aquarium texts. Most of those do well without a skimmer as well. Coralife and a few other do make 20" and smaller PC lights. With one of these, say 18 watt to 36 watt, you could keep most soft corals and a few LPS, maybe a small derasa clam. If you want to keep SPS or something like a maxima clam you would need a metal halide or possibly one of the coralife 96 watt PC fixtures. I've never tried either on a tank that size and I can't see how it is even possible without a chiller but maybe someone else has tried it. I've had some success with the compact flourecents, it just (again) gets a little hot. I use a 24" dual T5 on my one 10 gal now and that works better but kinda looks silly, not what you want in your office. Once you get a better idea of what you want to keep somebody can probably give you some idea what kind of lighting you need. Your choices definately expand when you go to a 24" tank though. While people (including myself) kid themselves thinking 'nah i don't need that much light', we all end up on the continual upgrade path. It's better to just buy once and be done with it. Of course if you want to ignore me - if you take a 24" coralife fixture, get the legs, you can set one on a 10g tank simply by slipping the legs further into the housing. I am going to change this to a 150W MH pendant that I have because I would like to keep a clam in there. It will be quite far off the tank surface to avoid heat issues.
