  1. These guys offer a discount for 3+ units. Maybe we should put together a group buy after the presentation?
  2. My extra red diamonds all went to the auction. I'll check before the next CAS meeting for you though- my swords like to divide themselves at the base when I'm not looking...
  3. Have you been wondering how to deal with Calgary's hard water? Our November 9th meeting presentation is an overview of how Reverse Osmosis (RO) and Deionization (DI) work to produce purer, softer water, and practical applications in the aquarium. As part of the presentation, we will be having a Special Raffle!!! (This is in addition to our awesome regular raffle prizes, so bring lots of $$ for tickets!) We will be raffling off a brand new, 5 stage, 100gpd RO/DI system valued at over $150! Many thanks to Max Water Flow for supplying the CAS with this unit! Please visit their website at www.maxwaterflow.com to view the specs on this unit, or to check out other systems for your aquarium and drinking water needs.
  4. The rose swords have long oval shaped leaves (rounded ends), new leaves are red to dark reddish brown. The red diamond leaves are more pointed, and new leaves are quite purplish.
  5. Is it one that I sold (#49)? I brought some 'Rose' swords and some 'Red Diamond' swords. The 'Rose' swords can get monstrous and take over the tank- I had one once that was over 3' tall when I got rid of it. If you want to keep it at a reasonable size, growing it in the pot might be a good idea. I have switched to the "Red Diamond" variety because they're a more "moderately" sized sword... plus the new leaves are a gorgeous purple. Could be either in or out of a pot, as you wish.
  6. What a coincidence... The CAS Library has a couple of new Catfish books, and the next meeting topic will be on RO water.
  7. Yes.* *If you're adding CO2 to a planted tank, too much aeration will cause it to escape to the atmosphere and be wasted.
  8. Just a reminder that our meeting is tomorrow (Tuesday nights now!) We are going to be making a very exciting announcement, so be there!
  9. It was closer to 24" than 18, but was indeed flat out beautiful. I think it was more about having space for a fish that size than the auction price. It's a bit of a gamble to throw something like that in to an auction. not many folks were there, and I for one was pleased that someone was able to take him home. Keep in mind he went up for auction twice, the first time there were no bids. Might have been better to put him on consignment at a store or in Kijiji rather than just hope someone had room for him at that time.... just sayin' Peace. We were worried that the money we raised for fish rescue at the SPCA would have to get used on him.
  10. That was me (blue shirt) sitting there for the first half. I traded jobs with fishclubgirl after lunch though.
  11. Yep- it was mine. At $15-20 a pop, I should have brought more...
  12. If you don't want them, I'll trade you for some riccia- cute container included. Dave's full of baloney- never believe anything he says!!! We always cap the auction at 500 lots and usually end up with around 450. Our aim is to have the auction over by 5:00. One seller was unable to make it, or there would have been a few more lots. In actuality, only 4 items were turned away due to the rules change. While there was no decline in the number of items, there were fewer people there. The general consensus (that I heard) was that prices were lower. Of course, there were a few things that went high!
  13. At the CAS, one of our stated objectives objectives is "The encouragement of the hobby of fish keeping". Sounds like you were highly discouraged by this person's statements. From your comments, I suspect they are from another club, but if you believe they are a CAS member, please PM me. We want to educate people, but absolutely do not want to come across as know-it-alls or elitist. Every club can set it's own rules for shows and auctions. To some, a fish's natural characteristics are more of a priority. Cbviously, some of the more modern "alterations" to fish (hybridization, coloring/dyeing, genetic modifications, etc.) can be abhorrent to certain people. Where you draw your line and where I draw mine may be totally different. Think of the Westminster Kennel Club Show- would most people's dogs be eligible? Probably not... but they go on loving them all the same. PS- That was a gorgeous swordtail.
  14. What was the vendor number? We do keep a record, so you could check at next Tuesday's meeting. Anything numbered in the 200's is probably someone from the Edmonton club; lower than that would be a local seller.
  15. The CAS meetings will now be held on Tuesdays, starting with October 12th. (The community center bumped us, contract being renegotiated, blah, blah...) Same place: Crescent Heights Community Association 1101 - 2nd St NW, Calgary, AB Same time: 7:30PM Hopefully this works with everyone's schedule. If you have a current membership, you should be receiving a reminder of the date change through the mail.
  16. Auction is this weekend! Whatcha bringing? I've got plants- some nice rose swords among other things. And I heard that Paul Mansfield is coming out from Sask, so there might be some interesting Corys coming with him...
  17. Does it stink? <--- my cyano ID test
  18. Yep. That's cyanobacteria. Pick out as much as you can and then try getting some surface movement since it doesn't like well oxygenated water. If it gets worse, or all over the tank, go with the blackouts, etc.
  19. Also, if you wish to sell items, you need to reserve your lots- the deadline is 1 week before the auction! Contact info is on the website.
  20. Q: When is the CAS going to have another fish show??? A: Well, we're looking at doing a workshop (for lack of a better word) in the spring which would possibly include several guest speakers, a banquet, and a small bowl show. This would hopefully be a springboard to full fledged shows in the future. We need to gauge the interest in this to see if it warrants the cost and time involved to put on such an event. Guest speakers would likely include: 1]SW/reef related, 2]Plant related, and 3]General FW related (cichlids?) Yes, we have some names in mind, but won't say until things could be confirmed. 2 guest speakers and the bowl show would likely be free to CAS (and other aquarium club) members; a small fee would be charged for non-members. The keynote speaker would be scheduled along with the banquet; Tickets would probably run in the $30-$50 range (discounted rate for members.) Any other comments or suggestions are welcome...
  21. We are looking at a workshop for the spring, which would include several guest speakers, a banquet, and a small bowl show. Just curious, what are some of the topics being tossed around for workshops etc? We are still discussing the topics & speakers- possibly one SW/reef, one plants, and one general FW? We need to confirm that there is enough interest to warrant the cost of renting a conference room, getting a caterer, etc. Tentatively dates would be Saturday, April 2 (our spring auction would be on Sunday, April 3.)
