  1. So pretty great color on that guy.
  2. Is anyone here interested in a possible guppy Co op ? I am working on 3 new strains right now. Moscow var. "Northern lights" a black blue bicolor, Albino var. "Winter sunset" a red and blue bicolor, and big ear var. "Fabio flametail" a red tailed, short bodied, big ear, metal head with extreme fin development. With the recent difficulties importing due to permits I am having to keep a lot of stock as I can't replenish my gene pool. I would like to give away a pair of each to different people once I can sex the fry or give you current breeding pairs. I normally sell these pairs for 50 to 200.00 plus dollars the very odd time I do sell any but these would be no charge as long as you are willing to keep them in at least a 10 gallon planted tank with no other fish except maybe a Cory or something, be willing to do water changes etc. Keep notes on all breeding, and tank maintenance, you would also have to be willing to collaborate and give back 2 pairs of my choice at some point when you have enough sub adults built up in the next 2 years. You provide your own equipment and high quality food such as NLS but my breeding stock is FREE. Thanks all and happy fish keeping
  3. Unfortunatly i lost George on monday night i think it was. I still feel terrible
  4. Have tried the shrimp. I did a 40% water change a few miniutes ago with preheated clean water. I hope it helps. I think however it might be too late.
  5. I change 10 to 20 % every Saterday. Although in his condition he didnt get one yesterday. He is not looking very good at all this morning. Barely breathing. I think i am going to loose him. And not knowing what i did wrong i am very reluctant to try again. And no during the one week he was eating he was very healthy with no sign of parasites. I feel absolutely terrible. I havnt had him for very long but he really means allot to me. -05- Thank You Rose
  6. Hi all, I am hoping someone can help me. George is a south American red tailed cat fish Phractocephalus hemioliopterus. I will give you all the information i can. When i first got George about 2 weeks ago he took about 2 days to begin feeding properly. For a week after that he fed well on guppies, thawed bloodworms sinking cichlid pellets and home grown baby crickets which he seemed to love. Then 3 days ago he stopped eating. He has no visible signs of illness. His only tank mate for the last 10 days has been a sailfin pleco. My ph is sitting at about 7 as my water is a little soft. Other readings for nitrates etc are 0. I have tried incapacitated guppies, followed by freshly killed guppies, crickets, bloodworms, beefheart, and small thawed shrimp. Tonight he is very listless, does not want to swim and only sits in his favorite plant. His colour has paled. I had an outbreak of ick after my electric heater kicked out in the middle of the night about 5 days ago? But not in his tank as it is heated to about 78. I am terrified of loosing him and i dont know what i have done wrong. He was my early birthday present from my husband and i love George very much. If anyone has any suggestions they would be welcome. Thank You Rose
  7. Hi Shai, I am very sorry about your little guy. From the picture i think it might be an internal ulcer. This is typically caused by bacteria but could also be internal parasite? I had this on my goldfish that i got from wal mart a couple of years ago and it spread through the tank like wild fire. It seems like every 2 or 3 days another one would get it. So yes i would treat the whole tank. I would treat with an strong antibiotic. If you live in Edmonton i will be in tomorrow and maybe we can meet on the west end where i am delivering some fish. I have some almond leaf that works very well especially when combined with commercial medicine. My losses drop noticeably when i use it on an infection like that.
  8. personally i think they would prefer a longer space to swim as they do breath air. The more air space up top the better. I like to keep mine in shallow tanks when the water is not filtered.
  9. Thank god for lucky 97 and T&T supermarket. You can buy cheap live food or dead. Its meant for humans but my fish dont complain. Then i also have somewhere usefull for the millions of baby shubunkins and sarasas i end up with every spring from my outdoor pond. Better than convincing friends to let me build them a pond and take 100 off my hands! And much less work!
  10. It's quite possible that "next year" won't be quick enough for that cat. You might want to source something to keep him in when he outgrows the 120 before he moves to the pond. Believe it or not i am a woman of many talents. hehe. I'm halfway through my masters in gardening and landscape design. I can build an indoor pond in less than a week if need be hehe. I already have a corner in my current dwelling selected if the need arises. Unfortunately George will however just have to live with about a 2or 300 g pond until i build the 1500.
  11. um... where are you putting the potentially HUMONGEOUS George? gotta pool? man... i would give my hubbys left nut for a pool full of fish... At the moment George is in a 48 gallon, when he gets a little bigger he will move to a 120g and next year he will have an indoor pond after the house is built.
  12. Hello all, I would like everyone to meet George. My new baby red tailed cat. Thank you so much to Colby of Elite Aquatic in Calgary for bringing this little fellow in. All you folks down there should stop bye for a visit. I found him very knowledgeable and a pleasure to work with. George arrived extremely healthy and did not have the typical body scars or infections i normally see. Anyways, Here is George Baby_George_1.bmp
  13. Just thought i would add a breeding note. When breeding for the DT gene, do not breed two DT together. It is a lethal dominent gene. Meaning you will loose most of your fry and those that survive will have very short bodies and great difficulty swimming. To breed DT select EITHER! a male or female DT and a spouse of the same fin variety (plakat, Half Moon Plakat, Crown Tailed,Super Delta, Half Moon, or Veiltailed) Most of your fry will take the Double tailed gene as it is dominent. Happy Fishkeeping ! Rose
  14. Well he has a little bit of butterfly lacing, and is fully masked so he would make a good breeder. To get super delta babies wich are very nice breed him to a half moon female with a dragon background. If you are choosing a Plakat female. I would choose a Half Moon Plakat as the half moon Plakats have a nicer shape and about half of your fry would turn out with the nice half moon tail and body shape. Your best bet for X ing in my opinion is another yellow dragon or yellow butterfly for the nicest fry. If i find out anything else i will let you know. Rose
  15. Nice Dragon! I love dragons they are one of my favorite. Yours is a silver dragon with mustard gas yellow. The nice sky blue metallic is from a blood dragon back in his lineage somewhere ! Beautifull fish
  16. Hi all ! I have had allot of requests for easy betta breeding instructions recently so i decided to post it for all. This is the method i use. There are as many methods as there are breeders so my method is in no way right or wrong, its just what works for me. Feel free to play arround and develop your own methods. Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have. Good luck and Happy Betta Breeding ! Rose Breeding Betta These are instructions for first time breeders. Breeding betta can be a very complicated process. I have found this method to be the easiest with the largest fry batches for first time breeders. I use a 1.5 litre Betta Bow tank that can be purchased at wall mart for around 8.00 I also have a 10 gallon tank set up well in advance. This is full of plants, snails and gravel but has no other fish. You want algae to start to grow in the tank and a healthy ecosystem before you begin spawning your betta. I use a whisper internal filter for 1-3 gallon aquariums in the 10 gallon tank to oxygenate the water with minimal disturbance. I do not oxygenate the betta bow tank. The bow tank comes with a divider and a bottom grate. I also purchase a light for small tanks. This uses a regular Christmas light sized bulb and can also be purchased at walmart. It is important to remove the bottom grate before putting in your bettas as the eggs will get caught underneath and your male cannot remove them to the nest. Use water from your 10 gallon so it is not a shock to your fry when you later move them. When you place the male and female in the bow tank place the light on top and leave it on. The light helps by providing spring like conditions and heating the water. It will also help the male later to see the fry at night. Use the divider to divide male and female for 24-48 hours. Until he has built a good bubble nest. I will often put a small plastic floating plant on his side to give him a more secure nest site. Your female should have lateral bars by this time (may be difficult to see on light females) and you will be able to see the ovipositor if she is ready to breed. When the pair are ready to begin remove the divider. If your female is being very badly damaged. (bleeding or missing allot of fin) replace the divider for another 12 hours. Also replace the divider if there is no spawning activity for 12 hours. Continue this process until there is spawning. You may continue to feed your bettas until spawning commences. NOTE: it may take several days and often a week or more before a pair begins spawning. Some pairs spawn immediately others such as half moons often take a long time. Once spawning commences the male will “squeeze” up to 400 eggs out of the female by wrapping his body around her. When the pair are finished spawning your male will chase the female away. It is now time to very carefully remove her to her own container. I recommend using betta fix to prevent infection of her spawning injuries. When removing her use a small net and be careful not to disturb the bubble nest. This is where your plastic plant comes in handy as an anchor for the nest. After 1-2 days you will see little tails hanging out from your nest. These are your fry. Their father will care for them until they are free swimming, at about 3 days old. I float the whole betta bow tank in the 10 gallon fry tank. Once the fry are removed to the tank remove dad immediately to his own container. If you try and remove him from the bow tank you will disturb your fry and possibly catch many of them in the net ! Begin feeding fry immediately with vinegar eels and or freshly hatched brine shimp until they are approximately 4-5 weeks old. Then you can supplement their diet with finly chopped frozen foods such as bloodworms and brine shrimp. By six or 7 weeks they should be eating frozen exclusively. After 5 weeks begin removing ( to their own containers) any obviously aggressive fry or fry who appear to be male ( longer fins, brighter colour) as they may begin killing smaller, less developed fry. When you move them put water from your 10 gallon in the container. This helps keep the 10 gallon clean as it acts as a water change and also helps your fry adjust to their new bowl environment. After 5 weeks you will be removing fry almost daily ! You should be able to sex all fry by 12 weeks of age. Some people continue to raise females together. I prefer at about 12 weeks to seperate them to their own containers. This keeps them looking nice and allows them to grow bigger as they dont have to compete for food. I find separated females to be better future spawners. Using this method I have raised an average of 80 fry from each spawn. It is a good starter method. If you have any more questions please do not hesitate to call. Thank you Rose
