  1. Nice picture Werner... good example... I sort of like it
  2. I should of read more closely ( above out of water ) ... Not on top...
  3. good rule of thumb to grow plants that are not low light and are near the bottom is 3 watts per gallon... why not purchase 2 of the coral life 65 watt set ups... Or look for a used metal Halide at one of the re-cycle places if you are wanting to get some real good light into that 55... Small tanks are a lot easier to get decent lighting to work with cheaper light setups. The problem with the larger tanks that I have found is that they are to deep for decent light to penitrate with cheaper set ups... You need good lighting... Things will grow but slowly and not as nice.. Hope this helps PS dont forget about a co2 source and fertzzzzz
  4. You should try some Riccia... ... grows easy and your Discus would probably love the cover that it creats... If you were in Edmonton Jason sells it cheap Livestock for sale section....
  5. I still see about the same amount of fry.... So I am going to leave as is for now and see what happens... My guess would be the fry tank would be better if I was looking for a larger survival rate... For now I am happy with just a few and I will try to build on that by excersising a better method next time I notice one of the females changing coloring and staying near the entrance of the cave. I dont think I read in any of the litterature how often these fish spawn... Anyone know?
  6. There was another way they talked about .... Using Hair grass as the platform ....
  7. I found this interesting and I think I will give it a try... Have any of you tried to grow Riccia this way... Java moss: Java moss (or the finer variety, Christmas moss) makes and excellent live attachment media for riccia because it is a slower grower and is thus is quickly covered by the riccia and rendered invisible. The java moss is also a low light plant so it continues to grow and form new scafolding for the riccia fluitans. Most importantly, java moss will self attach to the driftwood w/o the need to be tied down. To prepare driftwood in this manner, just wet the driftwood and mix the java moss you wish to tie to it with bits of riccia. You then tie the riccia fluitans and the java moss to the wet driftwood and that's it. Here's an example.
  8. That just makes to much sence... LOL.. thanks for the advice
  9. Well my Apistos spawned and mother has hatched her eggs and I can see her keeping about 5 little wigglers in check! There may be more but that is all I see at any given time... The question I have is more for the future not the present... These little guys are still in a long planted 20 gallon that has the male and one other female in it... I was not quick enough at getting the cave, Female and eggs out of the tank... Will these little guys survive in the original tank.. How the heck do you people move the the cave to the fry tank... My substrate is brown play sand and I used 3" pots burried in the sand with only about 1/3 of it exposed... just enough room for moma and pops Any advice would be welcome for my next batch..
  10. At what size do Labs start spawning? I purchased 5 from Gina they are very nice indeed! I cant tell the difference between the male or females ...
  11. So your finally getting the big tank....I am sure you will make a show stopper out of it! Did those corries that you purchased ever spawn?
  12. Not sure what I did wrong... I will try again LOL
  13. Not the best picture... We will suceed sooner or later
  14. Jason good point the daylight are probably even better... I just may switch to the 25 daylights.... I had bought some a few months back and my wife hated the light coming from the daylights so I switched to the regular flourecent... Thanks for reminding me of that... Would it be even better to line the inside of the hood with Tin Foil ?
  15. Thanks for that Nature Nut.... I found an old hood from a 10 gallon with incandescent bulbs and I screwed in two 15W FLOURESCENT bulbs... for some reason I didnt think that the screw in flourecent would fit into the same sockets........... Thanks
  16. Is there any bennifit to having a regular twist flourecent bulb over a 10 gallon?... as far as benificial light source over a ten gallon tank to help grow a few plants in a fry tank.... Or do I have to find a grow light somewhere...
  17. I have to learn to spell check some of my posts LOL.... I meant FOLKS
  18. Thanks K9 as always! New I should of purchased a bigger foam filter... I am going to add another one shortly and remove the biowheel and i guess I will buy a bigger pump to supply both filters....Hopefully I can find a quiet one...
  19. Thank You Folds for all the good advice... Always aprieciated !
  20. I started using a foam filter on one of my tanks a couple of months back in combination with a biowheel... I want to take the bio wheel out eventually as this tank will have little ones shortly... The question I have is: The foam filter is rated for a 20gallon tank (Hydro-11 ) I ran a 1/4 tubing to the top of it and I am using an Airmaster air pump rated for 15 gallons... Is the air pump good enough for this filter or should I be looking at purchasing something a little better? Jerrry
  21. Yes from what I understand double reds and trple reds do fine in Edmonton water.... I am just prepairing my self for the future, I want to try a few different varieties that are more demanding after I have suceeded with these.. The bottled water Idea is a good one 1/2 and 1/2... I just wonder how low it will take the PH... I am guessing with wood its probably sitting around 7.4 or so... would like to get to neutral..
  22. What would be the the easiest way to lower the PH in SA tank... I hear the chemicals to lower PH are spiky.. Is that true? I dont want to buy an RO system.. I have far to many gadgets already.. I dont really want to use peat as the fish are clear water fish from what I understand /// double redtail cockatoos... Is there a product available? I have lots of wood and plants in the tank. Thank You
  23. I wish that I could get great pictures like that.. well done and thanks for posting
