  1. When you say pond Jorg are we talking standing water like in a slew or is this from a manmade pond?
  2. So so you Freeze the critters in portions?
  3. I use to run nearly 300 watts on top of my setup and still couldnt get enough lite into that tank to grow anything but low light plants... wanted to follow the 3watt per gallon rule....My 100 gallon is just to deep for the lite to penitrate it unfortunely... so now it is a low light and low light plant tank... Java moss and fern.... Jungle Val and anubias nana/// all doing fine fortuetly.... I tried getting some pictures of the fish in one of my 20gallons that has thinner glass and has over 65 watts on top of it... it is lit up like Navada and my pictures still did not turn out worth a darn ..... Hmmm Thanks for your thoughts tho...
  4. Jack how do catch those critters...and when you say 2-cups do you really meen two overcrowded full cups of critters?
  5. You have to be careful if throw in one of those white 3-10 day feeders... they can change your water chemistry... but its a better alternative then nothing if you cant get your hands on some twice a day automatic feeders..
  6. I agree 4-5 days they will likey do ok without any food and some say a fast is good at times for grown fish ... any longer may be questionable with the fry...
  7. You can purchase twice a day feeders that you can regulate how much they feed / they opperate on AA batteries and hold enough food for a couple of weeks .... available at most LFS , I have seen them for around 20 dollars...a good long term investment for your fish...
  8. The rainbow tank is aprox. 100 gallons and it has 80watts of light ... The tank is a high quality Oceanic custom built tank... the glass is probably 3 times thicker then the commonly sold tanks in the LFS... maybe this is the problem... I will have to try taking some pictures on my other tanks that have thinner glass to see if this is the problem...
  9. Yes my Rainbows are very nicely coloured... Lots of frozen blood worm does the trick... Now if I could only get some decent pictures!
  10. I have a tank that I purchaced that was painted black as a background and it looks great , however if I were to do it all over again i would use material that you can buy at any Home depot that is used for cabinet bottoms ... it is vinyl and comes in many different colors , so it is versitile with what you have in your tank and what look you want... and it is easy removed if you want a change... and it is also cheaper then paint..
  11. I didnt have very much success with taking pictures .... I must of taken 40 pictures of various fish in my Rainbow tank and this is aout the only one that turned out half decent... any suggestions folks? I tried two different cammeras 3.2 Kodak and 3.2 Nikon...
  12. Yo Yo Loaches will cure your problem as well !
  13. Pianos dont even come close to that kind of weight...We have two pianos ...both upright proffesionals and I was able to lift them up high enough on each end on my own to install cushions under the wheels to stop them from damaging our hardwood...not sure of the weight but for sure no more then 500-600 lbs I would build the beam support probably putting together 2x10 lumber flat under the beams in the opposite direction and putting a couple of telescoping supports under it...
  14. Might as well add my two cents worth as well ! I read an article a few months back about airstones and it stated that they are actually a waste of time the only bennifit is the disturbance of the water surface that may break up the film on the water if there is a film. I have alway used AC HOB filtres and this seems to look after both of these problems ( surface film and airation ) and I always put double the needed filtration on my tanks , one on each end of the tank... not sure why I started doing this LOL but I have myself conviced now that double filtration is best... I could be out to lunch on this theory.. Is there a possiblity that your filtration shut down over night Gina?
  15. Are there any Nerites that are native to that region?
  16. I have recently set up an African tank. I know that sooner or later algae will apear, what do you people do for algae prevention ... I really want to keep the tank native Lake Malawi... are there any native fish that will do this work.. Thank You
  17. Couldnt you just put a divider in the tank with the female in it? Seems to me this would be better as the female would be less stressed by leaving her in the exact same water...
  18. Is there a trick to vacuming sand? I have always had gravel on the bottom of my tanks... I put sand in my latest tank but I find it very hard to vacume it up completly.. Its a great looking tank the fish love the substrate and you hardly see any spoil.. problem is I know it is there... would like any advice possible to make it better... Thank You
  19. I am looking for information on these Africans. I purchased 4 juviniles today at the mini auction after the Edmonton aquarium club meeting. I have a tank with bristle nose plecos, is there any problems keeping these fish with this type of pleco? Any other information about this type of ciclid would be appreciated.. Oh yes thank you to the lady that brought these to the auction at least I think it was a lady that I was talking to earlier in the auction... She also had some cat fish... would like to talk to her again about the species she had there, I didnt buy them but was interested in how she bred them..
  20. I never clean my filtre material by running water over it...use the water that you take out when you change out your water. That way you will not kill off the good bacteria and I would only do this as jvision said rarely/ once every 2-3 months would be lots... oh ya and dont overfeed or overstock the tank..
