  1. wicked thanks.... they do sell these products AND they come with the inverter for the price listed - CALGARY AND EDMONTON locations... http://www.bcom.ab.ca/store/product.php?pr...&cat=395&page=1
  2. Yeah I have tried the actinic route but it is a little too much light and I was hoping to decrease the amount of energy used - may try an actinic in an 18" fixture and see how this throws the light down on the 48" tank Thanks for the input still would like to know if anyone has seen these around however.....
  3. Anyone know where to pick up one of these in the Calgary area. I am looking to set up the lighting on my Mbuna tank and this seems to be the way to go rather than LED's It is discussed in detail in this link: http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/diy_moonlight.php Somewhere in the article it mentions that it is run off a computer power supply so I presume that a computer parts retailer may have it but I am unsure of where to start - any ideas would be much appreciated Thanx CORY
  4. I only use driftwood I collect myself - never had a problem yet ->knock on wood..... collect - clean - sand - boil - soak - use just make sure to boil or disinfect it before you put it in - And I try to steer clear of pine
  5. The Oscars get a little ornary sometimes but BIG RED is always willing to defend himself. He was huge when I bought him from Riverfront. He had all his legs and all his "feelers" when I saw him there. I figured since he was only about 6 bucks that it would be an experiment worth trying. When I introduced him to the tank there were a few hard feelings from the Oscars but because he had full grown, intact feelers he could sense them coming in for a shot. He would raise his massive claws and clamp down on anything that came close enough. After a few minutes of this the Oscars got the idea and left him alone. Now he just has to defend himself from the odd cheap shot swipe from the Oscars. Alot of the time he just seeks out the highest point in the tank (such as in the pic) and chills out while the Oscars steer clear.

  8. Try PMing midgetwaiter as well, If memory serves Aaron was offering to drill one of my tanks for me a while back. Worth a try....
  9. These are the best shots I could get out of probably 50-60 pics. You were right Hung - these buggers are fast. These are a "right place at right time" kinda fish...

  11. How is it that we are supposed to post pictures now??? I don't see a "browse" title for attachments at the bottom like there was at the old site. Anyone???
  12. why don't my pictures seem to work? Is there a format issue? My avatar was screwy as well - had to go back to standard... For example... http://albertaaquatica.com/index.php?showtopic=3296 but I see that other pictures are still working..... :eh: http://albertaaquatica.com/index.php?showtopic=3113&st=15

  14. I had the same issue with a newly purchased power head as discussed at the bottom of this post: http://s6.invisionfree.com/AlbertaAquatica...?showtopic=3661 seems the terms "water-proof" and "submersible" are no longer legally viable - just "water-resistant"....
  15. I had considered buying one sometime back - however, I feed my fish a floating pellet so I was kinda worried that they would plug up/ get sucked in by the skimmer. Went out and bought a powerhead instead. I position it near the top of the water and when it looks like the scum is building up I throw on the air attachment. Seems to kill this layer in a hurry... If you do decide to get one - be sure to post your opinions here. I haven't been able to find many reviews on this item myself
  16. Pool filter sand is my choice - uniform mid-size grain - neutral colour - minimal cleaning necessary - fish crap doesn't stand out against the color - and it's inexpensive (about 10 bucks a bag seems to be average)
  17. After turning the powerhead upside down and it working fine I noticed on the backside of the machine in small lettering "water line". Is this just a manufacturer covering its butt or are these things not submersible?? Haven't had a problem yet but it kinda worries me...
  18. I got my pool filter sand from Western Pump which is on 42nd ave, just off Blackfoot trail by Silver Dollar Casino I think it was 10 bucks for 50 lbs
  19. Understood - however, I do have the polisher attachment on the intake. The actual powerhead intake cannot be above water line - but what if the "cannister" goes above water line? The whole reason I want to turn the thing upside down is so that I don't have to turn it off during WC. I think this situation would be OK...
  20. Just wondering if there is any reason why I cant turn my new powerhead upside down so the intake is from above and the output is lower in the tank? I don't see any problem with this but being my first - I didn't want to miss something obvious...
  21. that was kinda my understanding as well - the sides of the tank can handle more weight due to the structural integrity, not just the integrity of that particular glass thickness Thanks...
