  1. I like them too. I don't find them distracting at all. However, I think the pooing horse smiley should be added to the clickable smiley list.
  2. Golds sells the XP3 for 169.00 By the time you convert from USD and take into account shipping costs and stuff, it may not be that much cheaper. For that filter anyway.
  3. OK, for the same price as the three little pads you get in the Reno filter box, I picked up a 2.18 x 2.74m sheet of quilt batting at Fabricland rather than the foam. I got the pre-packaged stuff pictured here: http://www.fabriclandwest.com/quilters%20c...at_we_carry.htm Specifically, the third one listed. I was gonna get them to cut me some off the bulk roll, but it was scary being in a fabric store all by myself. I had to get out before I got any strange ideas like purchasing silk to make a Pirate Shirt. YARRRR!! In any case, I'm still a little hesitant to put this in my filters. It says it's 100% polyester and all, but asking an employee there if there may be any additives to the fibre that could be harmful to fish got me a look like On this thread, and other boards, I've read enough times that many folks use quilt batting in their filters, so it's probably ok. Just wondering if anyone uses this particular brand with no problems.
  4. I can understand the cleaning stuff and the beer, but I'm having trouble figuring out what the ketchup is for....?
  5. I don't think that would make Mr Pleco very happy

Around 20 bucks, and I think we got 110 to 120 lbs. We selected from a pile that the rock was 1" to 3" in thickness, not sorted. It's a bit more expensive if you choose from the sorted piles, like all 1 inch or all 2 inch thicknesses. Which worked out well as we were looking for assorted sizes anyway. Dammit Jim, we're decorating a fishtank, not building a sidewalk!

Check out Burnco. We picked up well over 100 lbs of rundle rock there for 20 bucks or so. It is a dark flat rock like slate so that could be an option. HAHA! before posting, I checked their website, and they have several types of slate: http://www.burnco.com/RetailWeb/web/retail...type=03&siteid=

    Hi

Silly, no. Crunchy on the outside, juicy on the inside, yes.
  9. There's also some "cookie cutter" setup suggestions for different sized tanks here: http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/quic...erence_list.php
  10. Not that it really matters, but seems board posts show standard time rather than daylight time. This, of course, will be moot soon. Unless board time changes automatically. So I'm a tad anal about time.... :P It's about TIME someone was HAHAHA!!!
  11. Our tank has a few scratches in the glass. They were not really noticeable when the tank was first set up, but now that there's some algae growth they stand out. Not about to replace the glass on the front at this point, just wondering if anyone has a recommendation for something that would be suitable to clean algae out of the scratches. The regular cleaning pad thingie, while good for the surface, doesn't really reach into the scratches very well. hmmm... maybe a toothbrush...

    Hi

Just so you know... my real name isn't Yasper. I mean, c'mon. That would just be silly.
  13. Gonna give it a try. There's plenty of filtration before the water gets to the final compartment where I want to put these, this is just for the final polishing. I've tried rinsing out those reno pads, but they tend to fall apart and that's why I wanted something a little more permanent or less expensive. Thanks
  14. Would this foam and/or the quilt batting be a suitable replacement for the Reno Micro Filtration Pads in a Filstar XP canister? http://www.aquariumpharm.com/media/micropad.html I have two XP3 filtres on my tank, and these things are $11.00 for a box of three which starts to add up. They say to change them once per month, but I've been changing them every two weeks during water changes. (weekly water changes, alternate filtre maintenance)

    Fry Tank

I don't know if this should be posted here, or in the buy/sell section. But anyway, there's a new Petland in S.E. Calgary. It's just off 130th Ave and Deerfoot in where the Co-op and Superstore and all that is (S.E. of intersection). One of the opening specials is 10 gal tanks for $10.00. They appear to be pretty cheaply constructed, but hey, what do you want for 10 bucks? They had quite a stack of them if anyone in the Calgary area is looking for a cheap 10gal. I picked one up just in case one of our fish start holding again. It has happened a couple times, but so far they've never brought them to term. Which brings me to my other question. The fish that was holding is an albino peacock. From what I've read, the albino thing is a recessive gene and the albinos are, in fact, hybrids. So, I'm just wondering if the fry will be albino, or if we're gonna end up with a tank of Mystery Fish?

    Hi

Well, like the subject implies... Hi Found this forum linked from Gold's site. Thought a local board was a pretty cool idea, so here I am. Browsing through some of the threads, I recognise some names from cichlid-forums.com. Anyhooo, I'm more of a lurker than a poster, but figured I'd say hi (see above) I'm pretty much a cichlid n00b. How I got into it was really due to the house we bought a year and a half ago came with a 120 gal tank built into one of the walls in the living room. We thought that was pretty cool, and it was one of the deciding factors in buying this house. So it sat empty for a year what with other stuff going on and all, but finally decided to get it going this summer. Cleaning it up was a bugger (access to it sucks), and the old fluval they had was no good... but on the other hand, they had hot/cold water plumbed right to it, and it's behind a wet bar so a sink for draining/vacuuming/water changes makes it all very handy. Bought a wack of "rundle rock" from burnco, and sand from home depot and away we went. After much reading of cichlid boards, I guess I shoulda paid more attention to cycling the tank, but hey.. n00b. Did go as far as getting some filtre gunk from an lfs (Tanks a Lot under the Paws Pet Food on Elbow and Heritage) and letting that establish it somewhat before adding fish. We did add fish slowly as well, and no casualties so I guess it was ok. As it happens, earlier this week I threw together a little page to show some friends our fish. Now that I found this forum, seems the Hi Post is as good as any to put the link... maybe the mods will spank me for not linking it in the pictures forum! Fishie Pics by Yasper Am I gonna get in trouble for having this guy in there?
