  1. These are suposed to work great http://www.hydor.it/inglese/bioflo.htm Edit-sorry have no idea where to find one just was talking to someone on a forum about them and he loves it
  2. I thank you again for all the info just had a discussion on another forum about fish nutrition and found myself almost quoteing all of this so, ended up posting your site in the conversation out of thanks
  3. still if you have filtration for 100 hundred gallons of watter you stick that on a ten gallon you can't keep a hundred inches of fish in it Note that is highly exagerated and simplified obviously the inchpergallonrule does not apply mostly but I have a point I ran a fluval 403 on my 90gallon mbuna for several months and had no problems I see a filtration as a means of copeing between watter changes and I did so weekly with no problems, now i have a ac 200 on for little reason and have noticed no difference, I do however plan to upgrade by adding a ac500 or 110 if their around and will stop there and in proportion this still will remain absolutely little compared to what you filter proportionately. I have no problems, my fish have no problems, why spend the extra money I calculated filtration efficiency useing numbers from the bigal's catalogue which i believe to correspond to what is presented by the respective companies on the box, and not just through gph, these are no0t my recomendations they are the manufacturers Anyone know if the new ones are any different or just a different color plastic?
  4. True if i wanted to stretch it I'd use a 500 on a 100gallon max but the other manufacturers are most likely equally guilty, and if a tank is overstocked it is overstocked and filtration isn't going to make up for it much watter changes could but there is no sense relying on extra filtration for a poorly stocked tank
  5. I like to overfilter too but what you guys are running seems alot, I think double filtration with two filters would be ideal for any tank and my money
  6. I think the basic performance of the different hob filters seem to explain there effectiveness quite clearly, an ac 300 is good for a 100 gallon tank, so why does a biowheel filter with 400 gph only handle a 80 gallon tank(emporer 400b), niether do any other hob filters get the same capabilities for the gph they all rate around the same Penguin gph100/15gallon tank gph125/25gallons gph170/30gallons gph330/45gallons, Emporer gph280/55 gallons gph400/80gallons Ehiem liberty gph100/20gallons gph150/35gallons gph200/50gallons Tetratec gph150/30gallons gph300/60gallons gph500/100gallons Aquaclear gph100/20gallons gph150/30gallons gph200/50gallons gph300/100gallons gph500/150gallons so generally when averaged penguin gets 6.304 gph to the gallon, emporer 5.037, tetratec 5 gph to the gallon, ehiem 4.286, and of course ac wins with the most acurate results due to most examples with 3.571. Numbers were averaged and divided rounded to the thousandth So compare these only the ehiem comes close and the ac out prices all of them substantially ( I believe 55 dollars at golds) it's also simpler, meaning it has only one pump to maintain and no fancy biowheels to stop spinning How can anything more expensive less efficient more complicated be justified? buying anything else just seems stupid
  7. why so litlle a ac500 rates for 150 g and the ac 300 for 100, I wouldn't trust it at the limit, but with the other filter he's capable of well over one hundred gallons providwed he stocks well
  8. I would expect it to be sufficient your still over filtering slightly as it is rated for 50 gallons, you don't seem to be overstocked and generally the recomendations are close enough, though a second filter ac or sponge is always good
  9. sorry it's a 90 gallon I know this is bad but, i have 2 mles and 2 female elongatus, the johanni are 1:2:2 male:undecided:female
  10. So admin, what are you thinking, It seems to be pond season soon and I don't know when i'm suposed to restart my pond which hopefully can be done as soon as possible so that I can use the 60 gallon to grow out some syno's i wanna buy. PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAASEE J-ROC says "well since you asked nicely It'll be up by tomorow" I think i heard him say that, anyone in edmonton hear him I know he's calling it out right now, oh wait a second I think i heard it again, maybe he said "don't continue writeing an entire page about absolutely nothing", no he wouldn't say that everyone loves my nothing, and right Now all the mods and admin in calgary are saying that we can have a pond forum, just listen everyone i can really here it!!!! and then someone was like I'm gonna give you lot's of money, who was that, which one of you, really need to put some names to those voices. Ohoooohohhohoh fishes inn the goldfish tank say "I wanna go outside" syno's in the store told me that i shou;d put goldfish outside and buy them, so if anyone here actually want's to post something to tell me the answer to the goldfish outsideslashstarting pond question it would be greatly apreciated and on the side not a really great place to put that would be in a pond section. Where we talk about ponds and people say "hey this is what you do with a pond" of course we only have a small pond some three hundred or so gallons the original kit, you see was for like a 240 gallon poond but we dug the hole to big so bought a kit for a 500 gallon pond but were much to lazy to expand the pond to five hundred gallons. This is partly why we need a pond section several other people out there were just saying jsut a minute ago "hey I wish I were on a Alberta fish forum that had a section about ponds in it right now", but regardless of what people really want it is up to the admin who are very busy so be patient an wait until we hear from you guys J/K I only care about me of course I hope this doesn't really effect your decisions mod and really anybody reading this should go away this is pointless and a waste of avaluable time that could be used to crreate a pond section, eh eh eh heheh?(HINT) that's right I think you got the point but will contninue for several more words, cause those goldfish over there (to my right and then behind) are actually writeing this hehe, J/K. God I crack myself up sometimes. But wouldn't you all like to know what color my goldfish are, well one is white while mostly it has some orange spots here and some orange spots there, "like an orangutang?" "Uh.. no, stupid", then it has some black on it's tail fins , I bought it at pisces as an orange white longtailed comet, and we also bought soem orerange oens as well which seem to have lost most of their scales resulting in some white ptaches but i'll tell you all about them when we the the POnd Forum, woooooohoooooooooo, eh? This really is the last thing I ever thoguht i'd be doing right now this is not possibly more intresting then my homework, I mean it's the paris peace conference, man gotta get to it but not till I know about these fishies and what I Have to do with them because yknow what if they should be in the pond right now, "yeah but it is frozen" Sure sure it is that's is right of course" *considers* "but I really think they can manage" "oh yeah, really how?" The giant terrifyeing man challenges I of course boldly step forth and as a litery and oral debate champion of texas declare "because sir giant terrifyeing man, these are no goldfish they are ice eating maniacs" The man stumble from the verbal blow I so cleverly delivered and falls to his knees in penance, How many of you think i'm the biggest nerd in the world? actually second thought don't answer in real life I'm kinda cool, and the goldfish thusforth never wanting to go out into the pond before it was ready aka unfrozen... :shifty: I think you all get the point
  11. I may have, sexed my elongatus wrong and possibly have three males one female, these are the biggest agresers in my tank which contains five johanni and four lombardoi, plus one lab, I've read of all male tanks. But will this work with a mostly female but all male of one species tank, thanks
  12. Didn't mean to offend you RD, thought this was the point of the thread and noticed it had similar nutrition to NLS, I had originally bought it bercause the ingredients list was so short but noticed the vagueness of it as well after compareing to a wardley ingredients list, there are also added vitamins listed but didn't post it
  13. How about this stuff "Sera granugreen" "granulated fish food for algae rock-grazeing fish" "sera granugreen-slowsinking green granulated food-especially developed for fish, such as Lake Malawi and Lake Tangyka cichlids that graze on algae rocks and feed on small organisms that live in them. The high content of carotene-rich spirulina and artemia shrimps enhances the splendid color of these impressive ornamental fish. The herbal protien with high content of digestable wheat germ and roughage in sera granugreen are processed optimally to ensure healthy growth. sera granugreen also contains natural minerals, trace elements, a well-balanced multivitamin complex and stabilized vitamon c to enhance fish vitality and their resistance to deseases." Fish protien, fish products, wheat germ, grain products, spirulina, spinach, herbs vitamins, colorants Nutrition Crude protien 38.5%, Crude Fat 6.1%, Crude Fibre 3.9%, Crude ash 9.5%
  14. Hi i've read a many of your posts on the nutrition stuff, and this as all were very intresting and informative I have been rethinking what i've been feeding my mbuna, but will wait till I run out of my current foods, the original idea being one low quaility cheap flake food, i've used different types but currently wardely total tropical, and one spirulina enhanced food, again tried different types currently useing sera granu green,(which I bought because of the simplicity of the ingredients list, but i see this is likely misleading), this was particularily helpfull because i wandered about the effectiveness of feeding my first fry standard flake foods, and I see higher protien is to be a requirement which would be probally offered in what i feed. Anyways you definately effected my thought on the subject as it seemed of little importance before, and i thankyou much for the information. Although I trust the truth of what you say I have to ask, how you know this, is it related to your profesion? or just an intrest? on a sidenote, have some questions about nls, would a pm be inconvenient for you? thanks again
  15. I bought a pack of hikari first bite at petland it's the closest store but lacks selection i found no cyclops, Anyways it seems like it will work well enough probally better than just flake and is slow sinking which is nice and makes the fry more active so far. I also found a mention of the lettuce watter thing in an article on cichlid-forum, it says basicly to get a jar of tankwatter add boiled vegies, i used potaoes as was suggested and add air pump put by sunlight for about two days untils cloudym, and add to watter this is cultivateing bacteria, i'm trying this and will let you know how it goes if your intrested, The mother keeps picking them up after i enter the room, unless she hungary, i feed her and then she picks them all up How can i remove her if she keeps picking up the fry? And when will the maternal instincts begin to fail and canabalism begin? should she be removed as soon as possible or wait till she is done being a good mommy?
  16. Yeah it's suposed to add infusoria or something the lettuce, but i'll stick to what you said, she spit but only some of the fry she was chaseing them around last night, and i thought she was trying to eat them but then she still had some in her mouth couldn't cacth them anywasy their amazeingly quick Thanks degrassi
  17. Nothing came of the johanni I'm not sure whether it had been holding or not still but, I followed your advice for my maylandia lombardoi that had been holding and it is pretty much about three weeks now so i'm expecting soon she is now alone in her 20gallon tank, today i noticed that every so often she darts really quick straight ahead for about 5 six inches and stops she has done it a few times and it isn't normal for her could this have something to do with the babies maybe means she'l spit soon? Should i be droping a pellet into her tank every day so she has soemthing to eat when she spits if I am not home instead of the babies. I also have a elongatus holding i think and should i put her in the same tank? What do you suggest to feed other then baby brine shrimp? can i do crushed flakes? i've read about sticking lettuce in a jar of water placeing it in the sun for a day and then pouring the water into the tank but this seems like i'm just adding dirty water? what do you use? thanks
  18. We have a small 300 and some gallon comet pond, that will need suggestions for new filtration/UV equipment come spring, I would be intrested
  19. Thanks rons, it was no big deal i was pretty sure it was working and expected you to find this, so I'll just move the air to the small tube and aim it upwards with the sponge out from the wall in a upside down L shape, and the sponge is huge so that's great
  20. It is similar, to the second type but the sponge is much bigger, can this peice be bought or will my setup work? Thanks
  21. Yeah sounds like a dumb question but the one I bought from mbuna ron(thankee), is different than anything else iv'e seen it has a one inchish diameter tube with two suction cups, the this turns 90 degree angleish, into a tube with holes and a sponge fits over top. I wonder if maybe this might be more for the return of a power filter but anyway i figure i'll make it work, what i did was stick three airhoses from one hagen 800 and one hagen 802, into the shaft point it slightly upwards and to the side of the glass tank where the bubles coem out the sponge. But i'd like o check this design with someone possibly more knowledgeable i have never used a sponge filter although what i view to be similar a ugf, problem i see is Not enough water comeing through the tube thus no watter current through the sponge(I stuffed as many air hoses in as possible) Next the sponge isn't on the bottom, (don't know if this matters) Next there is no airstone so the bubbles are split mostly by the sponge and may not be spreading as well as should Anyone familiar with this type of sponge filter maybe halp me out on proper setup? Anyone doen diy sponge filter help me ensure this'll work? Thankyou
  22. I have goldfiosh and golfish fry so will check it out
  23. Maylandia lombardoi as it changes from female to male colors? Considering it's from a mixed tank I think it's a good chance they are quite common but great fish ahhh your right has two eggspots too
  24. Enjoy the planning, We all love to help
