  1. Wow yeah, that did it, now I know why they say africans are furocious eaters, all four devoured the food in like 3 seconds, and believe it or not they came to the top rather than me dropping it to the bottom like with the gold barbs, very cool. Was also looking at the % differences between the sticks and tropical fish food, and there is only like 1% differences, but still can't wait until the NLS comes
  2. I just got some yellow labs today, and the only food I have for them is some floating sticks, I cut them up into small pieces small enough for their mouths, and tried to make them sink, if I got lucky enough to get one to sink, the labs would grab it, spit it, grab it, spit it, etc many times. I know this isn't normal so I have some questions: Is this Nutrafin stick food okay for them? are the pieces too big still? can I feed them algae wafers until the NLS food arrives via mail - or till the rocks get some. I also have some flake food, it says for tropical fish, it's also from nutrafin, but I'm not sure I will be feeding them it because it looks to have more fatty foods than not like in cichlid food. thanks. ryan
  3. Thanks again for the offer, but I have 4 juvie yellow labs in the 52 now, so not sure if they would fare :/ otherwise I would have jumped all over that lol, I still need some small lab juvies to get my wanted number of at least 6, so if anyone has them, give me a holler, just need some way to gettin em to my area lol.
  4. As I was reaching down into my tank to re-arrange some rocks, I noticed my Betta come to where my arm was - and my sleeve was just dragging on the surface, he nipped my shirt sleeve LOL. Obviously doing nothing, but I was just wondering if anyone elses fish usually does this?
  5. Ha, I was just putting in some rocks in my tank, and all was well for about an hour, then I went back into my room and heard a waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa but very very low pitched. I was stumped, so I called in my mom, and she came to the conclusion that it was air escaping, so I am all like, shoot did I get a hole in the tank from a rock?!?! So as I was panicking, I moved all the rocks around searching for the leak in the glass, I picked up a small rock from the corner and saw some bubbles - upon further inspection I found no crack but saw that my rock was bubbling! I had a good laugh of relief since I knew the glass wasn't cracked, but then I realized - I don't think it's a good thing that my rock is bubbling lol. It turns out where the rock was bubbling, there was a hole which connected to a tunnel which probably has a hollow area in the middle where air was being kept, hence blowing off the air bubbles. LOL all in a days work
  6. Thanks for the reasurrance, I am excited to get this sand finally in the tank
  7. I asked Brad (snaggle) to grab me some sand from Edmonton while he was up there and he got me play sand, thanks again . I have been reading about it on www.cichlid-forum.com and have heard some horror stories about it getting sucked up into the filters and wrecking them..I am running a Fluval 304 and a small AC HOB filter. What should I do to prevent wreckage of my filters, or is it actually that bad? Thanks Ryan.
  8. What do you mean by adjust? If it is already cycled, then just wait until the temperature is normal, float the bag for 15-30 minutes and let them go.
  9. Welcome, You think you had it bad? I've lived in Alberta my whole life and didn't know about this site lol!
  10. How big are your clown's? I love them fish.
  11. well thats good to hear, thanks much.
  12. I know that one should usually try and get a good male to female ratio for breeding purposes, but what happens when you get more males than female labs? I am buying 4 from PopEye, and was intending on trying to breed them, but he only thinks one or two of the four might be female, is there any chance at all they will breed? Thanks, Ryan.
  13. My pleasure They were taken by myself when I was with my family vacationing in British Columbia.

    Hello

Hey, I just thought that I would formally introduce myself since I have failed to do so as of yet. My name is Ryan Brown, I live in Provost, Alberta, Canada. I am 17 and graduating this year. I have been in the fish hobby for about 2 years. I consider myself different from the rest of my classmates because I am one of only 1 other person I know of in my town that is actually in the hobby . I have had a couple of different tanks, mostly all small ones - 10-15-20 gals, and I just recently picked up a 52 Gallon off Ebay for 150.00 including 1 Fluval 304 2 heaters, a fish net and gravel vac. I am fairly new to the whole Cichlid business, I have only owned a pair of Kribensis, and 1 Bolivian Ram. I am currently planning on stocking my 52 with the oh so popular tandom of Demasoni and Yellow Labs, but am struggling to find any fish near my area and for a decent price. Sorry for the long intro, just thought I should take the time to introduce myself to everyone here Ryan
  15. heh, they were taken during last summer, just thought I should share them with the members
  16. It is more on the glass and decorations, not on the one rock ( havnt found any rocks to put in there) There isn't any Mbuna or fish in there cept fish that don't eat the algae. I had a decoration out of the water for a while and it did turn a little green. I'm pretty sure it's not bad water parameters because I used everything out of my cycled tank, the filter, and deco's. So hopefully I will start to get some good green stuff. Also, if it doesn't all turn green, is the brown stuff actually harmful?
  17. I have been getting Brown Algae for a long time now, and it isn't turning green. I was wondering, since algae is basically the number one food for African Cichlids, is this brown algae bad for them, or is it the same as green just a different color? Thanks.
  18. Yes, the air out there is amazing, I love the smell of the tree's :P
  19. Yeah I've never really liked them, I always see them in my LFS but they are uglier than sin.
  20. Just some of my very un-professional pictures from when the family and I went on our vacation to B.C, hope you enjoy: Our view from the balcony of our hotel room On the road
  21. I'm using a Fluval 304 plus one AquaClear 100 on my 52 gallon right now with Demasoni and Yellow Labs coming soon, I agree with everyone that says over-filtration is the best thing to happen, it all depends on the fish you are going to keep.
  22. Heh, I always seem to get the brown algae in my un-planted tank, but I just wiped it off every once and a while, the mbuna that will be in my new tank, yellow labs, and demasoni, should take care of that problem for me.
  23. Sorry about the bad quality. He has very little color, but is starting to color up loads compared to when I first got him, he is in my 52 gallon right now, but I will be moving him back into my 15 gallon planted once I am getting the tank ready for the mbuna.
  24. Cool, they look really good. Are they pretty active when they are small, or do they just hide amongst the rocks?
