  1. Nope, but I might know who it is...... I'm up in Sylvan. If it's the same guy, he's trying to sell it.
  2. Didn't realize they had a pond one....any other pond stuff they have, such as Prime????
  3. And buy your Melafix at one of the two Wal-Marts in town....it's cheaper than Petland. Dunl
  4. Very nice stands...Welcome aboard! Dunl
  5. I usually try to go with RD's suggestion when dealing with an agressive fish and adding new members....
  6. Gee, at a buck a piece I know where my next meal in Calgary is coming from. Now if I can only find a way to cook them up in the Jeep while I drive between fish stores.....
  7. Free swimming means that they are able to move around. Crush some flake, soak it in some water, and use a turkey baster to put it on the bottom for them to feed off of. I bet if you do a search for convict breeding on the net you will find heaps of info....
  8. I would just treat them as normal fry, and feed them baby brine shrimp, crushed flake, or something like that. If they are free swimming, they should be okay.
  9. Yeah, same here......all I get is this: :bang1: :boxer: :bang1: :boxer: :bang1:
  10. Okay, I just spit my peanuts onto the screen.
  11. I don't use them that small, but I have breeder cages set up in 10 gallon nets. No death rates really to speak of.... However, I don't think it is a space issue, but rather a water stability issue.....more water, more stability. Bigger tank, better water. That's why I told my wife we need to get a 480 gallon tank. 12. Yes, kind of like an advanced sponge filter. I found that the sponge filter I had clogged too easy, and then didn't filter the water as well. However, the sponge that I was using was quite dense, and something like the AC sponges would probably be more efficient. By using a couple of inches of gravel, there is more space between the pieces for waste to get trapped, and the floss polishes everything else off. You would need to change the floss on a bi-weekly or so basis, but that is about a 2 minute job to do. The food container is a white plastic, with a label that removes very easily. Being white plastic, it looks very non-descript to anyone who walks by your tank. I will try to get a couple of pics on two variations of this to show you. On one filter, I used the charcoal insert for an undergravel filter as the main tower. I never use undergravel filters, and had this one given to me, so I don't know how common this type is. If it's very common, then many people will find something to use that will fit perfectly in a Nutrafin container. Hopefully, people can make use of all those "useless" undergravel filters laying around...... Dunl
  13. I got this idea from the internet, and have expanded it a little for my own purposes, so I thought I would share. This is a great filter to use in a fry or juvie tank, and helps to keep the water clean. At first glance it appears not to be working very well, but I dare you to give it a full week in a dirty overstocked fry tank, disassemble it and tell me it's not worth it's weight in gold!! I had this undergravel filter kicking around that I didn't want to use,an extra gravel vacuum that doesn't fit my DIY python, some extra air stones and air tubing, extra gravel (I use sand strictly in my tanks), and several Nutrafin Max Color Enhancing Flake Food tins. So I set off to work. The air line goes through the top of the gravel vacuum, and leaves just enough space for it to escape on the way out the top. If you use something different, as long as you have left an escape hatch for the air, you're in business. The air stone attaches on the end, and ends up inside the vacuum. Now put some floss into the bottom of the Nutrafin container...about 1-1.5" worth, and some up the tube between the airstone and the escape hatch. Place the vacuum in a vertical position just like you were attempting to vacuum out the container, and have the air line come out the top to attach to the air pump. Now fill the container about .5 to 1" from the top with gravel. The gravel will hold the vauum in place, even while it starts to fill with water. Now you are all set! Your water will be crystal clear in no time, and you can clean this while you are doing water changes. I have found that by using an old gravel vacuum and a nutrafin container, that you have room to place your water change vacuum in the top of the container and clean all the "filter jello" from out between the gravel. The first time I tried it was in a fry tank that I could never keep clean with a sponge filter. Now the water is crystal clear. How it works: Some people think that the escaping air sucks water into the filter. Close, but not true. As the air escapes, the water pressure in the aquarium forces the surrounding water to flow into the filter and up the tube, where it escapes with the air - getting filtered in the process. When I first tried this, I tried a wide filter, and the top of a plastic bottle as the interior tube. Too much surface area is a poor thing - go tall and narrow instead of wide, and you'll get better results!!! I'm writing this in a hurry, so it's probably not explained the best it could be, and I will be back to edit it I'm sure. PM me with any questions about this! Dunl
  14. Here's more than you ever probably wanted to know about treating ich: http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/ich.php Dunl
  15. If she is holding, unless there is a great deal of cover for the fry, they will be eaten by the other cichlids when spit (even if they are vegetarians), If she is holding, she should look like she swallowed a marble. The throat area will be quite swollen. Does she look like the third picture down in this link?: http://www.africancichlids.net/Victoria/Ha...ack/gallery.htm if so, she is holding.
  16. So, are we up for starting a Transporting thread?
  17. Exactly. You can bet that if fatpuffer starts an African tank, that he will be welcome to some of my stock in return for being kind enough to offer to bring some fish back from Chums Boxing week sale for me. Dunl
  18. I am currently on another board where there is one thread for transporting "stock" from one location to another. Basically, (if willing) you post stating that you are "going from A to B at (insert time) on (insert date), and I have xxxxx amount of room for cargo. PM me for details and I may be able to arrange transport for you..." The best part is that the admin cleans it up and deletes anything in the thread after the date is due so it is always refreshed. The only thing left is a post at the top telling how it works. Great way for everyone to cut down on shipping costs. On the other board, they chip in gas money for anyone going back and forth, but in my opinion, I would rather we don't do this little part of it. I feel that if you are going somewhere anyway then you would be paying the gas regardless of whether you are doing someone a favour or not. Also for me, if I am paying the gas for this, I would rather just make the trip myself to look at fish. All in all, it can be a great way for us to make this province a little smaller. Malawi_luver, this one's for you.....
  19. It's not necessary, but I have always fed my fry even when they have had egg sacs. I have found that they become stronger, and I have less losses when they are fed with their egg sacs.
