  1. Congrats !!! Looking forward to seeing some pictures !
  2. No problem, hopefully you will be successful and happy with the amount. Personally in each spawn I average 200 to 300, culling half of them...
  3. I did see these snails at Big Al's too awhile back! Betta's are great snail eaters btw... I have three 10 gal tanks, one for Black Crystals, one for Betta fry grow out and one for my Red Crystal Shrimp tank. Both shrimp tanks are infested, hundreds.. the Betta fry tank.... 0 I sometimes take my duck weed from the shrimp tanks and put over to the betta fry tank.. and I am certain snails tag along as well.. but no snails to be seen ... Theory, Betta's eat them !! I was thinking about getting those snails myself for the other two tanks, but then I thought hum... what about my shrimplets.. not sure if I like to see them gone! Dunno, if they are even a risk to shrimplets but I certainly don't want to try!
  4. I don't use java moss in my jars as I use a turkey baster to clean them and would suck it up. All my betta jars do have duckweed to help keep the water cleaner. Java moss is in all my breeding tanks as it's a good source of infusoria. If I only had a couple of jarred bettas, I'd probably have moss in them. I do it accidentially when some moss gets stuck when I do my water changes. I personally wouldn't go that far... but I will give you a hint!! IF you have an cycled tank, instead of fresh water that is room temp, use the cycled tank water.. Betta's perfer aged water.. and slightly warmer temps then their jars. I never use fresh clean water for any of my jars.. I use the fresh clean water to change the tanks with. Because I change the jar water so frequently this is never an issue. The tank water gets changed, every second day to about 50%, so technically it works...!! Everyone seems rather happy with it.. Moss in the jars, would end up being a headache in the long run, unless you have a betta barrack... Good luck with the spawning!!
  5. Great set up... I love the moonlights.. dunno why blue lights I always find attractive!!
  6. Yeah, your not supposed to feed him while he is with the egg's apparently it confuses him, and he eats the eggs I am not one hundred percent sure this is true, but I would certainly go with it!! It won't hurt him to not feed him while he is busy with his babies. Fish can go without food for a few days up to a week ... Good Luck on the next batch..
  7. Isn't it, wow strange.. she was a sponsor here who'd sold betta's then just disappeared.. her name was Katherine not sure if it's spelled with a C or a K.. and I prob, got the name of her store wrong too, it's been awhile.. because of the number of Betta's you brought in, I thought it was possible you were the same gal.. Yep, I am for sure going to be one busy lady, but I absolutely enjoy it so much... I have approx, 600 plus if you include my stock... most of that number is fry though.. hahhaha thank god I use bins and don't separate until the very last moment!! LOL Going to ask patrick to install a dishwasher downstairs for all these jars !! !! He don't know it yet sooooooo shhhhhhhhhh!! -roll-
  8. Wow, 600... that's too much, btw is your name Katherine? DeeMar Betta's?
  9. :welcome: to the forum!!
  10. ROFL, yep!! That's right Ray!! At least the shed isn't as cold as last week, now that would have sucked ! LOL Sue, I got them from Indonesia, these guys are fab.. they are all young stock too.. very healthy!! They just need time to recoup from their long ordeal ...
  11. Firstly, I would like to say a special thank you to Jay at Arovillage!! Without him this shippment would have parished!! I can not express the deepest thanks for the hours he took out of his personal time, to assist me clearing them out of customs, and repacking them and again shipping them out to me bright and Early this morning. IT had been a hair raising, very scary experience, customs withheld them for 8 hours they were very cold by the time Jay obtained them. The Westjet office closeing so we couldn't ship them to Edmonton, among other mishaps too long to mention, we worked all day yesterday and even brought Patrick in to help get this order into Edmonton safely. Without Jay, they would have surely parished.. Thank YOU JAY you deserve a few drinks.. and a sandy beach after this one, especially somewhere where there are NO BETTA's!!! LOL Anyways, I did take some quick shots of what I did bring in: PKHM - Males only assortment of colorations too numerous to name them all, they will be featured later on... HM - Males only again an assortment of colorations too numerous to name them all again featured later! CT - Males only again a rainbow of colorations available. Over 90 to choice from, ranging from Super Red, to Marbles.. They are not for sale at this time... they need time to adjust, make sure they are healthy... but I thought I give you a brief example: And yes all three rubbermaid containers are Full of import betta's.. !!
  12. Patience, they will work it out when they are ready!... It took me quiet a few tries before I had my first sucessful spawn..
  13. Just so that you know, even use experienced breeders have egg eaters.. I just removed a female from the breeding tank and the males belly is very very full.. and he is the crowntail I already have fry from... They do it, for whatever their reasons are... I hate it when it happens though!
  14. I wouldn't remove the Male immediately afterwards.. He is very important in the egg stage of development... give him an opportunity to do it right... This time I think he will get it!!
  15. It all depends, in water changes, protein of the foods you feed them.. and separation. It can be anywheres from 3.5 months to 5 months, or more.
  16. The containers are from a store here in Leduc, they are used for spinish dip for catering companies etc... they work fantastic... Also, yeah those grow out tanks are awesome work fantastic, as well as the incubator is what I call it, I have a heater in there to heat the jars.. they color up faster and grow better more active.. i can fit up to 36 betta's in one tub... the bins I am not sure how many I have in them.. but its better then a glass tank... especially if your not needing to look at your fry growing.. works no differently and you can safely put a heater and filter in them.. I use gravel to make sure the heater doesn't melt any plastic.. also the incubator, provides humidity which they absolutely love...
  17. Can't say I approve of the parts about conditioning of fish for fighting, etc. but you gotta love his greeting: "You come I'm so please, I'm regret when you leave." Yes, it's a tradition they have had since early 1200, it certainly not favored by North Amercians and I am sure Europeans, but these fighters are very well cared for.. they train them and they are given the best foods.. conditioned. Even though they use them for fighting, they are also very careful in doing it, if you know your betta's they do NOT fight to the death as everyone is lead to believe. They have a max set time for fights, as soon as one betta gives up, which they show certain signs of, they are immediately separated and the bet on the two fish is complete. They are then conditioned back to health quickly... they want their fighters to fight again so they take very good care of their fish especially if he has won a few battles, after all its cash quickly earned... IF you watch a betta spawn, the female can sometimes be hurt really badly.. fins torn scales missing.. she is laboured in breathing, hiding under anything she can find... Because of the betta's natural aggressiveness, they have an amazing recovery.. riped fins grow back quickly.. scales return to normal at an amazing rate.. so, when you see a beat up torn up betta.. it won't die... only time it would if the person's water quality is poor.. their diet is lacking.. I've personally had betta's jump from one jar into their mates jar without my knowledge.. only to find the victor above, flaring at the buddy in the other jar while the loser sits at the bottom of the same jar sulking.. hardly touched.. the victor is no longer interested in fighting. The betta also senses when the other is given up on the challenge.. and rebuffs the aggression, if the other betta does not give up they will resume the fight till one of the two betta gives in... not always, this is why,I STILL DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS... it can be dangerous to your fish so don't unless you know what your doing !!
