  1. Hey fishdude... how goes the battle with your Oscars? I am running into the same issue. I have a 80gallon with a pair of 7" Oscars and a 8" Pleco. They leave the Pleco alone, but Sam started to chase Sid fairly often since I upgraded the tank size. I feel the same about just keeping 1 of the Oscars, but I don't want to crowd them if I can avoid it.
  2. In case anyone else found the 'Skippy' external pond filter site, I actually decided to build one. The hard part was finding the right size of outdoor rubbermail container, but I did find one. Co-ops have them (cattle water feeders), but I got my smaller 30gal rubber pail from a garden supply store (ellerslie road) - its designed to fit inside those old wine barrels. It as not cheap ($40.00) and I wish I looked around a little more (None of the hardware stores had anything suitable) Anyway, I build the filter, started a fishless cycle, which just finished today. I did a 95% water change (lots of work) - thankfully my pond is only about 200 gallons. I will post pictures soon.
  3. I fed them, Sam can close his mouth, so it just appears to be sore from being open for a day and a half. I will give him a few days to recover before netting him to take a closer look.
  4. Good news and bad news. The good news is Sam managed to spit out the cory body. The bad news is that Sid (his brother) then promptly ate the cory body. Luckily, Sid spit it out and I was able to throw the body away. Now, Sid is fine, but Sam looks like he damaged his mouth a little. It looks a little stretched and it is staying partially open (or he cannot close it). Sam shakes himself back and forth now and then, so something must still be stuck in his mouth. Hopefully he can get it out himself and his mouth will heal-up.
  5. One of my 4" baby oscars (Sam) just decided to try and eat my one of my full grown Cory cats! The bloody Cory cat tail is still sticking out of his mouth! I never dreamed it could fit inside his mouth, but Sam proved me wrong. Needless to say, all the other cory cats are gone from the tank, Sam is now alone with his brother (Sid). I am a little worried, I sure hope Sam can digest a thick-scaled Cory? Is there anything I can do? Do I try to remove it (ie: pull it out).. which I don't think is a great idea because the cory is in there head-first and might be pretty stuck and I don't want to damage Sam by forcing it out. Should I cut the excess tail part off? I am pretty upset about this, I should have trusted my instincts and never mixed them in the first place.

  7. Hey Oscarfan, Horton.. cool guy. I have a pair of Tiger Oscars too... right now they are i4" and in my 29 gallon... I am moving them to a 80 gallon later this month (once I finish my 200 gallon for my goldies) Are you planning on keeping him alone.. if so, what size of tank do you plan on keeping him in once he gets a little bigger?
  8. I would love to do something like that.... but my wife would kill me (seriously - I'd be dead) 1" glass fronts? How thick is the plywood?
  9. LOL... Pink rocks in the Guppy tanks... HAS to be a girls tank Nice video, loaded pretty fast on my machine.
  10. Welcome beermaster... 6 tanks to start eh? Not bad I hit 14 tanks my first year then trimmed it down to the 6 I have now. If your wife ever needs to get rid of some extra cull guppies, I would take some off your hands. My tiger oscars always enjoy a snack!
  11. I have the perfect solution. I built a 17 gallon barracks system for my bettas. Its a 28" long x 12" wide x 12" tall tank with light and cover, and I made 5 clear acrylic dividers that can seperate the tank into 2 to 6 compartments. The filtration system is designed specifically for bettas and will circulate the heated water with a minimum of tubing. The tank looks really good and gives each betta ample space to move around. Also, the dividers are cut to fit the hood, so there is no 'jumping' space for them to get at each other. I am selling this tank system right now. Send me a PM or Email if your interested.
  12. dude... Ya, it was the same for me. My 2 oscars (SID & SAM) where the last 2 at Petsmart Calgary Trail, and I just could not pass them up. I think a 90 gallon is about right. And I agree on the depth of 18". My 50 is only a 12" deep so I have to upgrade pretty quick, before they hit 9" anyway. How much time do you think I got? They are 3.5" now.
  13. Nice looking Oscar. Is it alone in the 90 gallon? I have a pair of 3" tigers I will be moving into my 50 gallon soon, but I know I need a bigger tank for adult sized tiger oscars. For 2 tigers, what tank gallon should I look for? And what dimensions are best (ie: 4' deep or 5' narrow?)
  14. Valerie, I saw a marsh-type tank at Big-Als in Edmonton and I really liked it. I also wanted a more natural habitat for my pearl gouramies. At the moment the tank is pretty heavily stocked, so the water level is a little higher than what I would like it to be and the surface area is fairly small, so besides some plants, there are no other creatures living in the top exposed area. I am still considering geting a few aquatic frogs or something... any suggestions?
