  1. sftlaquatics - are you still importing Tanganyikans?
  2. Yikes! Maybe 9600 watts is overkill, I'll look at other options.
  3. I am thinking of getting 6 young ones from LFS and raising them up in community 90g, is there any advise you can provide in terms of behavior and compatibility with other African cichlids. No intention to breed but I like to keep one or two pairs as adult display fish. Any advise on sexing without venting them?
  4. I am thinking of turning my over-sized double garage partially into a fish room and still be able to park one car. My plan is to run 4 x 180g and a few 90g. The garaged has a double retracting door and is insulated and heat by tow portable electric heaters 4800w each. My concern is the winter months with the snow and cold temperature that can cause moisture to precipitate in the garage. I am curious how much a problem moisture can present and if running two portable heaters is adequate? Anyone with experience housing multiple large tanks in a garage?
  5. I don't know why I didn't think of that. You guys hit it on the head, there has been no supplemental nutrients added in the last few months and the current lighting situation is probably too much and too long. I will reduce the photoperiod and resume nutrient additives. The shaded leaves covered in algae is still puzzling me. Why is this happen in these areas?
  6. All the Anubius leaves in my tank are rotting, yellowing, and have numerous large/small holes through them. It seem like the newer growth will be lusterous for a few weeks and then slowly algae (not hair algae)would cover them. This has been happening for months. The worst areas are on the oldest and most shaded leaves. My lighting is 2x24W HO T5 on for 7hrs a day on a 25g tank. There is absolutely no algae problem in the tank, just on the leave of these plants. Am I running too much light and this is what's cause the plants to react this way?
  7. Curious if anyone has a spare Eheim 1250 pump impeller they are not using? I need to replace mine and cannot find one locally. Of if you're selling the pump for a good price, let me know. Thanks.
  8. Is there anyone on here who knows how I can contact the webmaster of the Calgary Aquarium Society? I've tried emailing the contact provided on the website but have had no luck. Do we have any CAS executive members on here I can contact?
  9. Can someone tell me how to view messages in the Sent folder. Mine always appears to be empty. Is there something I am overlooking? Thanks.
  10. If you have a bulK supply and can spare 100g or so, please let me know your price. Preferably Sanfranciso or OSI brand.
  11. I love the way it looks NOW! I am not sure if Sil sand is play sand, perhaps sand blasting??? Does anyone know what it's intended purpose is? You definately don't want to put this in your reef. Sand made of Calcium Bicarbonate is what you shoud be looking at to add into your reef. It serves it purpose well in buffering, but I removed my sand bed from my reef after a couple years. I found that it was trapping too much detritus, more harm than good IMO.
  12. Thanks for the info. I got impatient as they were closed for the holidays, so I went with Sil-7 from Greeg Distributing. I didn't like the way Sil-7 looked by itself, so I added a 20lb bag of Eco Complete Cichlid sand. The formula end up being 1 part Eco complete and 2 parts Sil-7. I love the way it looks not. This is Eco complete cichlid sand
  13. The place I was looking at buying is called Gregg Distributing, you can find the address on yellowpages.ca Nyasa, are there samples available at that consolidated compressor? Do you know what the grain sizes are of Sil-9? What color is it? Thanks for the link by the way.
  14. I would go to Sil Industries in Edmonton / they have several varieties of sand .... all the way up to Sil 8 / I paid 8 bucks for 40K of Sil 7 / was cleaner then any of the sand I had previously purchased at Home depot and a little cheaper... How coarse is Sil-7 in terms of millemeter? Is the grain size similar to playsand? I am looking for something more coarse and the place I am getting it from has Sil-4 and Sil-7.
  15. Thank you Stratos, that puts everything into perspective. Now on to the shopping part I go.
  16. So with wild caught fish you need fish and wildlife paper work and tank raised you don't? Maybe better off to get the sender to send it as "tank raised", safe all the hassle. Please clarify as I am now confused from the different responses. All I want is to do a one time purchase from a US importer. He has wild caught fish that I want to buy, he will have all necessary paper work done on his end. He will ship it via Fedex or Airline (haven't decided). If by fedex, then it arrives at my door without me doing anything but sign and pay gst/brokerage. If by Airline, then I have to pick up fish and claim them through customs myself. This is where I am unsure. What do I do after picking up the fish and why do I need a lisense? Please be clear if you have actual experience going through customs. Is a company lisence absolutely necessary to import some fish for personal use?
  17. Really, if the shipper does his end of the work all we do is pick up the fish and pay gst? No more no less?
  18. Does anyone have experience with importing fish from the US? What are the costs and what permits are required if any? All I want to bring in is a couple boxes of wild caught african cichlids. What do I need to know or do once the fish arrives here?
  19. Very nice, thanks for the link. Is that a US vendor? How much was shipping to Calgary? What method?
  20. 96W bulbs are over 30", my tank is 24". With the 2x65w fixture the plants are going to grow too fast aren't they. I am new to plants so I have no idea how fast things will go under 2wpg versus 4wpg with co2/nutrients. As for apperance, I want a lush and full looking tank with minimal maintanance. I don't know if is even possible. I have two other tanks to take care of so the less time spent maintaining the better. Water changes and triming once a week is ok with me. 130w total is too much isn't it, especially if I only want to trim weekly? Should stick with 3wpg eh? thought?
  21. great idea, however I am leaning more towards the coralifef 2x65w PC because I just found a wicked sale on them, $109, comes with fan and dual moon light, very tempted. With this fixture, I may not be able to achive my 3wpg. :boxed: :boxed: choices???!!!!
  22. My dilema is between the Nova extreme SLR 2x24 T5HO, Nova extreme 4x24 T5HO, or Coralife 2x65 PC fixture. Price isn't really an issue, however, I don't want to just waste money on something that is overkill and not be put to use correctly. My choices are 2wpg or 4wpg, I wish there was a 3wpg option, I would definately go with that. Any ideas?
  23. My new 25g is nearly complete and all I need is the lighting to finish it off. This will be a heavily planted and fish aquairum. There is also pressurize co2/reactor on the system. How much wpg would you recommend? I don't want to upgrade in the future and plan on keeping colorful hard to keep species. Tell me what you're running for light?
  24. Save your money, there's a saltwater forum that has used equipment and livestock for sale for less than half of what LFS charges. Liverocks are listed almost daily on this site. check it out, you're get addicted. www.canreef.com
