  1. LFS has a tiretrack eel and before I picked it up I thought that I would see if anybody has one or has experience with one. I realize that they need a 180g tank by the time they are mature, just looking for compatibility or special care tips.
  2. Thanks for the input. I installed the bulbs to try them and the fixture "hummed" about 3 times louder than normal, so I removed them. I will be taking them back and find the proper ones. Funny that the Hagen website only lists the T10 but the LFS can order T8 or T10.
  3. So, if overdriven, I would expect a shorter lifespan of the bulbs?

    Lights

Can you run T10 lights in a T8 fixture? Went to replace my tubes and when I got home I noticed that they were T10 and acording to the Hagen web site, that is all they have. Curious as I have T8 Power-Glo's now and Hagen only lists T10's? What up wit dat?
  5. Just my 2 cents worth, but why not just remove the wheels and let the tank rest on the floor? Would save a few inches in height.
  6. Hopefuly the floor on the far side of the room dosn't settle.
  7. Just a thought, but how about using a piece of PVC pipe and a funnel. Put the pipe into the tank and add sand through the funnel. I should flow out of the bottom of the pipe and you can place it gently onto the bottom of the tank.
  8. I have two Blue Acaras and I find them to be very peaceful.
  9. I cleaned out my 55g (36x18 footprint) after a year of sitting dry and noticed that the silicone had bubbles around the edges and some algae growth under it so decided to reseal the whole tank. As I cut the old silicone out, it became obvious that the tank had been resealed before, poorly. I bought the tank used when I first started and never knew enough to check out the silicone that closely. The tank had held water for over two years before I moved everything into my 72 and never leaked. As I was removing the old silicone, I discovered that the one bottom side had not been done properly and the silicone from between the glass panels came out with the old stuff. My question is, do I clean the gap good and then put a bead of silicone in the gap before I do the whole seam or would it be OK to just do both steps at once, making sure that I got the gap filled well.
  10. Cool, thanks for the input. I didn't know and was worried about them attacking my fish but I guess chopped is safe.
  11. fed live leeches from the bait shop? I know the trout love them when I am at the lake, but could there be any drawbacks to feeding them in my aquarium? If the fish don't eat them, could they survive?
  12. You could check out Tropical Fish Imports on 9th Ave N, just off 36th St in the industrial section or Pet Parade by Center Village mall. Arrowanas and other goodies at TFI and occassionally some nice fish at PP. Other than that there is Petland and Petcetera but you take your chances there. Prices will seem outlandish compared to Calgary, though.
  13. I just take the foams for the AquaClear mini filters and cut a hole to allow the powerhead intake to fit into.
  14. I like to use this calculator, it gives a little more info than just volume. http://www.drhelm.com/aquarium/areajava.html
  15. I have a tube of Mastercraft silicone, window and door, and it states on the back "ideal for use in aquariums". Has anyone ever tried it?
  16. A co-worker of mine had one. He got great enjoyment out of it by dropping live insects into the tank and watching it attack. Keep a tight lid on the tank as they will jump, as my friend found out.
  17. Are these filters suitable for saltwater usage? Would the common complaints of cannister filters, eg nitrate traps, apply?
  18. Thanks for that. I kind of thought that the essential minerals in the salt would be gone and that it would have no other use. I never thought about dust, etc. Using it as a snow melter is a great idea, though.
  19. This is probably kinda dumb, but I have to ask anyways. Is there any use for the salt that I get on my tank from salt creep?
  20. If I had a sump, I think that I would prefer live rock to bio balls.
  21. Have you checked to see that your input hose is clean?
