A quick easy ans cheap way to go is by using a sponge of an Aqua Clear 200.... Cut a hole and slide the sponge over the intake. That will act as a pre-filter and prevent sand from getting into the impeller

I agree with wandj. the bulk beneficial bacteria will colonize in your sustrate and filter within the sponge. Large and frequent water changes should not disturb the bacteria colonies. Just be sure you are treating the new water with some type of treatment to remove chlorine.

First off.....remove the carbon right away as it will clean any meds that you are putting into the right out!!!!! With out having seen the tank, all I could recommend is to get a "general cure" OR "metrodonzale" from the pet store and treat the tank with that ASAP... Just follow the instructions on the back of the meds and treat accorningly. I would also do about a 50% water change and add in more salt then what you adding right now!!! I hope this help stop the fish from dying. Please post back with any further update

I use to breed the "motsi gold" variant and they are very easy to breed. Once they become of age they will most definetly pair off or even a trio and get right to breeding!!!!! You'll have more fry then you'll know what to do with!!!!

Using the 55 as a grow should be fine for all except the frontosa. They are best kept in larger groups of 5+ (2 males and at least 3-4 females) as the males tend to be very hard on females. The dom male will single out the other fish. Other wise should be fine!!!!

Lots of fish with lots of color...... MBUNA is the way to go. Looks like you have about a 37 gallon tank. I'd say that's too small for haps or peacocks. I would go with: One of the following in groups of 7-8 (2 males rest females): - Ps. Salousi - Ps. Msobo deep magunga - Met. estere blue/red (red zebra's) Any of the the above will give you blue and red (orange) Then add a group of 7-8 electric yellows

to my understanding, these guys do take longer then your regular haps to come to breeding age. They might just not be ready to breed yet. Diet also can be a factor. I'd feed them some frozen blood worms OR bfrozen brine Shrimp OR frozen mysis 1-3 times per week in small quantities. The extra protien will help the female in egg production. Yes it needs to be re-sealed. You will have clean out all the ols silicone with a razor blade and put back to together with new silicon. Other wise you tank will leak....

I use crushed coral / crushed coral sand in all my tank. It's a slight off white color and is very easy to clean. It also buffers the water maintaining a very high PH which is excellent for my african cichlids. When it does get into the motor, it simply get broken down by the impeller. I swear by the stuff and have had excellent results as well as I really like the look. You get the look of san with out the problems of sand!!!!
