  1. I did make it to the Calgary Show. Ended up buying some shrimp for the planted tank. There was so much to choose from. No reason to leave empty handed. Congratulations to The Calgary club for another great show!
  2. I have been keeping fish and plants for a very long time. Joined their group in 2005. But the small number of post on the site lead me to stop coming here. It is great to see it is a lot busier now. I have bred Angel Fish (Black veils, Half blacks, blushing, and marbles). I did get into salt water and kept a lot of corals, various fish and some anemones. I then moved for work and did not have fish for a while. I now have a 65gl planted tank with Angels, swords and cardinals & various other tetras. Also snowball pleco, albino bristle nose and two bristle nose pleco's. I am now looking at starting a 150gl Malawi Chiclid tank. I will be looking to buy some feed stock if anyone has some available. I have noticed there is not a good assortment of these in the local Fish stores.
  3. I have used Fluval for over 20 years all sizes and types. I have only had to replace worn impeller rods after 2 years or so of use. Knock on wood! An easy and cheap fix. I still have one running that I bought 14 years ago.
  4. Thanks for replying! Where do I find Calcium hypochlorite 65% ?
  5. This is the way I found out my tank and I were infected. I had some bumps on my right arm that were not going away. I went to my doctor he treated me for what he thought was a type of wart? After the treatment was not working I noticed the number of bumps would increase 2-3 days after a major cleaning of my tank. After doing some research on Mycobacterium marinum I informed my doctor and started antibiotics. I now use gloves and treatment seems to be working. Now that I am being treated. What is the best way to treat the tank? Will I need to wash everything and start from scratch? There is lots of info on what it is but not on how to treat the tank.
  6. Thanks You I liked the pleco too. I was just siting in front of the tank taking pictures of the other fish. He came out of hiding to see what the comotion was and just sat there watching. I'm not to keen on the fake plants but they were gifts from the kids. I could get rid of them but I kinda like them. The kids that is! I used the new Pentax K10D. It was a Christmas present for my wife and I to each other.
  7. I took some pictures with my new camera the other day and thought I should share. Just learning!
  8. I need some Help. I have followed the recipe. It lasts for about 5 hours than stops. I am using new brewers yeast. What is going on and how do I keep the yeast alive?
  9. Great! The worry is over. I thought it might be the start of something more serious.
  10. I noticed today that my yellow lab has started to turn grey near it's jaw and gills. Is this normal? This fish is in a 90gl malowi tank with water changes weekly and is about 4-5 inches long and 2 years old. Very nice coloring before this started. All other fish doing well and fed NLS.
  11. More likely fed them iron pelets and used magnets to move them.
  12. No real (Tyson ear eating) sparing going on :boxer: :boxed: ! I have done the water change with melafix added. The wound does seem to be getting better tonight. It's not the gaping hole it was yesterday. I will continue with the meds and clean water and see how it goes. Thanks all.
  13. Could some one please help? I came home tonight and noticed a pink sore on the tail of this fish. Do I need to treat this fish? If so with what? Or did my bristle nose cat latch on to it? The picture isn't great I will try to get a close up.
  14. I found it at a flower shop. Soaked it in the spare bath, in salt water solution for 3 days on the 4th day I used just declorinated water. (changed water daily) The fish seem to enjoy swimming around it.
  15. I thought I would share the picture of my tank. Sorry about focus. Camera man needs training. In the tank I have : Aulonocara Ngara Flametails (F1) Aulonocara Ruby red Protonelas taeniolatus (Red Empress) Melanochromis cyaneorhabdos (F1) Melanochromis joanjohnsonae (F1) Holding labidochomis caeruleus ( Yellow Labs)
  16. I have 3 BN pleco's one is an albino. They sure work for thier keep!
  17. Hey great idea for a stand! Is there going to be any storage in the two pillars? What type of fish are you going to keep in this set up? I have been using the sand blasting sand in my 90gl tank for two months now with no adverse effects to the fish ( Malawi Cichlids ). It rinsed very well, did not cloud the tank and looks very natural. The pool filter sand works well from what I have read but I wasn't able to find any in Lethbridge. I'm sure it's sold here somewhere.
  18. I'm having the same results! I have never witnessed these dramatic changes from food alone. I picked up some Giant Danios to cycle a tank and was thinking to sell them back to the store. Sure they are blue and grey. But now after feeding them NLS some red in the tail has appeared and such vivid colors. I don't think I can bring them back.
  19. Hey Paradisius When I lived in NW Calgary I was breeding two pair of angels for about 4 years. I used water straight from the tap for the parents tank. I haven't heard of eggs being calcified (but there is aways a first). Is the male fertilizing the eggs? They will turn white if not fertilized. Or maybe a type of fungus? Also when transfering the eggs into another container don't let the eggs come out of the water. Transfer into the smaller container right in the parents tank. I noticed a greater amount of none hatched eggs when they were aloud to hit air even if just for a second. You should also use the same water that is in the parents tank while hatching. I don't know if this has helped but if you have any other questions just ask.
  20. Great job! Looks fantastic! I'm about to start on a tank stand my self for a 90 gallon. Any hints?
  21. Hey I'm that guy from Taber. Just new to this area. Either Lethbridge or Medicine Hat is fine. Hold it! No, maybe Lethbridge and Medicine Hat should be part of the new Taber group? Ya that's it! lol OK, I don't think my vote is very strong on this one Lethbridge will be great.
  22. Hey thanks for the great help. Someone resently told me that there is a problem with sand getting at the impeller in the filter and wearing them down quickly. But it sounds like quite alot of people are using sand. I will have to try it out myself and let you know how I make out.
  23. Hey All I am starting up a 90gl tank with Malawi cichlids. I would like to use sand for a substrate but I have heard some bad things about using it. Like waste gets trapped under the sand and starts to rot creating a hazard for water chemistry. Is it a good idea to use sand? How would you clean it? Since the normal gravel sieve would not stop the sand. Any suggestions would be appreciated!
