  1. Great to hear, are they coming out with a 2-3 mm semi floater for Angels and Discus?
  2. Yup he is a red heeler with an interesting history. I understand he was a Petland dog that didn't sell right away so he was a staff dog for a while. He is incredibly well behaved. You, of course, don't give him opportunities like leaving shoes laying around, and we all take him on walks, all in all one of the best dogs I have ever had.
  3. As I was walking through my office I overheard a salesman talking about bringing his son's dog to the Humane society. Seems his son moved back with him and there was no room for another dog. Anyway I stick my nose in and here is Basil. Basil Basil 2
  4. It is about 4 feet at the deep end and yes I over winter my fish in there with a little heat, air and water circulation.
  5. Still some rock arranging and trimming of the liner to be done. I relocated the mill that I built from scratch 3 years ago and this year istalled a uv sterilizer and more plumbing inside. The pump is hidden under the planter on the left side, and my DIY filter is a rough tote that is the back of the water fall. This is a left and right picture in the middle is a bridge, length is about 16 feet long about 1000 + gal
  6. Too bad it is only in Edmonton , I am just completing my waterfall tonite, 3 years work have quite the pond to show.
  7. Because I have to transport water a long ways to the tank and I put the 2 ACs on the same power bar as the heaters, I just turn off the power, pull the caps from the filter , and for the hour it takes me to do the wc, I don't have to listen to 2 impellers sucking air. Eating yellow snow might kill you, poking butter up a cougar's @$$ with a burning stick might kill you, even being told by your employer that you have to transfer to Edmonton will surely kill you, but your tip didn't even leave an owwee mark.
  8. I am just trying to decide whether to go with RO water or not. It would be a change for them. You are right I do have 2 AC 500s to get juice from. Guess I should do something
  9. They mention Aquabac in the article. Are Mosquito fish allowed in Canada?
  10. Read this Manitoba article, it gives some ways to make rain barrels mosquito free, such a few drops of dish washing liquid to reduce the surface tension of the water and the mosquito's drown. The problems with mosquito fish is that they eat all larvae good or bad and in the wild have decimated amphibian populations. For your pond I would still recommend feeder goldfish or minnows. http://www.gov.mb.ca/health/wnv/docs/mosquito_homeowners.pdf
  11. Wrigglers again, I welcome suggestions but I am thinking to leave them in there. Meanwhile I am setting up a 30 for the parents but that probably won't be ready for 2 weeks with fishless cycling. Here is a picture, you can just see them at the joint of the AC intake. Last time I shut that AC down, (I have 2 running), she ate the babies.
  12. Just keeping this friendly but you have not answered my question. What is the point of seeding a new aquarium with used filter material and then leaving it for a few days with no bioload (fish poop) for the bacteria in the filter to live on? Lets keep this simple. Fish less cycling You put in pure ammonia no additives same as bunch of fish pooping up a storm. You get a ammonia spike of course You add Septo bac which is bacteria culture, which convert ammonia into nitrites 6-7 days later you get Nitrite spike. 4-6 days later you get 0 Ammonia 0 Nitrites some Nitrates No fish are harmed in the cycling of this tank. No other chemicals are ever added other than salt or meds. Yes Ammonia is a chemical but so is what comes out of the fishes rear end. And as Christian stated there is very little bacteria in the water so why transfer it along with possible parasites or desease over to a new tank????
  13. Ok, here is how I personally (now after a very experienced man told me how) cycle my tanks!!! You take as much water from an already established tank during a routine water change, and put it in your new tank and fill it with the rest fresh water! Also the VERY best thing you can do is swap filters with a established tank and you let it run for like 2-4 days and BAM you put you fishy freinds in!!!! And the best part is NO CHEMICALS!!!!! Like Christian said, and what is the bacteria in the used filter media going to eat until you put in the fish to create a bioload? You may as well fill a tank with dechlorinated water, put fish in and all will be well, right up to the first ammonia spike and if they survive that, the nitrite spike will get them. Putting a bacterial culture in clean water with no nutrients for the bacteria to consume and then grow is just about doing the same thing. I just cycled a 30 gal. for a friend, by doing this, I put four feeder goldfish in the tank, 2 days later and daily after that I squeezed the good good brown liquid from one of my AC500s into the new filter media and after one week had ammonia and nitrite levels of 0.Now the feeder goldfish are going into my pond and my friend can start GRADUAL STOCKING of the fish he wants to keep.
  14. If you are like me and do 50 percent water changes in this case a 90 gal. with 2 AC 500 filters, unless you pull the intake tube off, hard to do with the canopy on the tank, the water syphons out of the filter bodies meaning I have to go around back and put water in them so that they will draw water again. What I have done, is using a drill or hot needle, opened up a hole in the little adjuster thingee that sticks up. Then I put on a # 10 screw protector (little rubber cap) looks like condom for Edmontonian, but I wander. When you do your WC remove the cap to break the syphon and after filling the tank, putting the little cap back on and restart your system. You could also do a variation of this with tubing and a valve, then you could open the valve slightly to create aeration in the filter. I recommend you cut the little rubber cap in half so that it is easy to remove, sand the rough edges of the adjust thingee to get a better seal, and possibly put a little vasoline in the cap to make it seal better and make it easier to come off. Oh and you can get screw protectors at Home depot for 20 cents each For the bigger ACs use the # 10 black ones and for the smaller ones use the # 8 red ones. :smokey:
  15. Not Pulcher or Brichardi, My guess is young Leleupi.
  16. Well it looks like someone ate the wrigglers but they lay eggs every week now. My water tests as follows. This is Calgary water in a heavily planted tank with CO2 KH 6dKH 107 ppm GH 4-5 dGH 89.5 ppm not sure on this one hard to see color shift with my tester PH 2 different tests 7.2 Total AK 80ppm I am trying to decide whether to remove wrigglers when I see them, or wait for parents to get it right.
  17. Update :smokey: after about 10 attempts I looked at where my girl usually laid her eggs and spotted about a dozen wrigglers stuck there. This is in a heavy planted 90 gal. with CO2 and plain Calgary water. Now waiting to see if they make free swimmer stage. -ham-
  18. For what you are doing I would just have the outflow of your filter spill into the pool, and if you want, put an airstone in. My Koi never jump, but of course my pond has a deep end for them to hide in. Failing deep water I would get a bunch of water lettuce to throw in there. This will accomplish 3 things, water lettuce will feed on the nitrates reducing algae. It will provide shade and a place for them to hide under, shading part of the water also reduces algae and reduces water temp in the heat of summer. It is cheap, easy to grow and the fish like to nibble on the roots. Or water hyacynth, I wouldn't go with water lilies on a temp. pond. As far as UV systems go, you will need to know 2 things, how many gallons and the size of the pump or pumps. The laguna 15 watt UV unit is for up to 1800 gallons and uses a flow rate of 350 gph. Any pump you are going to use to filter 1800 gal.of water, would have to be in the 2000 gph+ range so you would need to divert a 1/2 inch line off your main pump water line or use a second 350 gph pump just for the sterilizer. With my pond I diverted a line over to the sterilizer and put a valve in front of it to control the amount of water going through the sterilizer. Hope this helps.
  19. Mathew, Mathew, blaming our network for what was obviously a crash of your "meat" computer.
  20. And it is 2 for 1 on Saturday! As long as the Saturday in question is the second Saturday of the month, this month May 12th.
  21. I see nothing wrong per say, as long as no one pushes on one end of the tank and folds that cabinet up. That is one of the reasons when you buy a bookcase you nail that back panel on it when you assemble it, the panel doesn't add strength but it keeps it from racking. And if you notice the "LFS" stands have the back panel too. At the very least I would put in a diagonal brace across the back.
  22. Glad to see it finally sitting on the bottom without someone standing on it. Nice design you 2.
