  1. Hello, I just started up my first saltwater tank and am in the same area. Joseph
  2. Wow, very nice! I don't suppose I could convince you to sell a couple? or could point me in the right direction?
  3. No, but I'd like to try my hand at them.
  4. Anyone working with any of the north american sunfish? crappies, blue gills, etc?
  5. Thanks, I will add a tap before the softener when I install it. Any ideas on the chlorine filter or what lights i should use over the 120g? I am considering metal halide but haven't looked into pricing yet.
  6. I'll start with a bit of background... bought a house in a small town that has really hard water, hard enough to stain everything so I'll need a water softener. Will the water softener cause problems with ph swings in my planted tanks with CO2? Will the softened water damage plants (can't see how but you never know)? What kind of a filter do i need to remove chlorine from the water if i want to set up a auto-fill system on my 120g? Edit to add: What would be the best lighting solution for a 120g planted tank at around 2 - 2.5 wpg? I'll probably have more soon but lets start with those. Joseph
  7. Arowana don't interest me, and thanks for the heads up on the p-bass. I haven't seen many large adult chiclids in person so feel free to post pictures. Oddballs aren't neccessary just looking for predatory, something showy, and it doesnt have to be over large. I really like the look of bass/ perch etc so since i can't keep native species perhaps someone has sunfish or something?
  8. I have an empty 120 gallon that I want to put larger predatory fish in, I don't really know whats out there that I can keep. I am thinking maybe peacock bass but feel free to toss any ideas my way. I want something that doesnt hide all the time and can keep a group of - say 3 or so. Thanks for your help, Joseph
  9. Sounds like breeding behavior to me. Are you able to sex them?
  10. I have a 3 in my planted tank and they haven't touched the plants. Maybe try placing stones over the roots, I had to with the heros i had. Unfortunately the heros decided to move the rocks as well so they ended up leaving.
  11. Thank you very much, hopefully i can irradicate this crap with this info.
  12. My tank is infected with cyanobacteria and i dont know how to kill it. been doing water changes every other day and it not helping. Found a few sites online that suggest eryithromyacin as a antibacterial but its a whooping cough prescripiton and ive never had it. any ideas?
  13. I bought it used this fall, but when I first hooked it up the flow rate indicator was all the way to the top (100%), now its half way down - 50% reduced flow rate.
  14. I have a Ehiem Pro 3 (2080) and I'm having performance issues. The sliding indicator was down to half, so I opened it up and gave everything a really good cleaning. Put it back together and off she went, but still only at half the max flow rate. I downloaded the manual and have tried everything in it to solve the problem but nothing seems to work. Any ideas?
  15. Where are the best places to find biotope plans and what not? Here is a tiny map of the approximate area I want to simulate. I realize that it is a very large area but I want to create a riverine habitat relatively typical of that area.
  16. What do you consider to be the top 10 fish/planted tank books no one should be without?
  17. Came home from Wabasca today and found that my rainbows had spawned. Now hopefully they will hatch and survive. Picks soon to follow. Now what do I feed the little ones if/when they hatch, and where do I get said feed?
  18. I built a reactor for my tank from 3" pvc pipe. It has two inlets on the side and an outlet at the top. Water and co2 go in throught the side mix and then exit through a 1/2" pipe that runs inside the center up out the top. It works great to disolve the co2 but it severely reduced the flow of my eheim ecco. Anyone know how to increase the flow? Should I use smaller diameter pipe? or a different system altogether? I'll post a pic when I get home from work.
  19. Thanks i didn't know about the differing drop sizes, although it makes sense now that I think about it.
  20. For quick reference here is Tom Barr's EI values (as found in the article mentioned by jvision) General Dosing Guideline for High Light and well planted aquariums. 10- 20 Gallon Aquariums +/- 1/8 tsp KNO3 (N) 3x a week +/- 1/32 tsp KH2PO4 (P) 3x a week +/- 1/32 tsp K2SO4 (K) 3x a week +/- 1/32 tsp (2ml) Trace Elements 3x a week 50% weekly water change 20-40 Gallon Aquariums +/- ¼ tsp KN03 3x a week +/- 1/16 tsp KH2P04 3x a week +/- 1/16 tsp K2S04 3x a week +/- 1/16 tsp (5ml) Trace Elements 3x a week 50% weekly water change 40-60 Gallon Aquariums +/- 1/2 tsp KN03 3x a week +/- 1/8 tsp KH2P04 3x a week +/- 1/8 tsp K2S04 3x a week +/- 1/8 (10ml) Trace Elements 3x a week 50% weekly water change 60 – 80 Gallon Aquariums +/- 3/4 tsp KN03 3x a week +/- 3/16 tsp KH2P04 3x a week +/- 1/4 tsp K2S04 3x a week +/- ¼ tsp (15ml) Trace 3x a week 50% weekly water change 100 - 125 Gallon Aquarium +/- 1 1/2 tsp KN03 3x a week +/- ½ tsp KH2P04 3x a week +/- ½ tsp K2S04 3x a week +/- ½ tsp (30ml) Trace 3x a week 50% weekly water change EI target ranges CO2 range 20-30 ppm NO3 range 5-30 ppm K+ range 10-30 ppm PO4 range 1.0-2.0 ppm Fe 0.2-0.5ppm or higher GH range 3-5 degrees ~ 50ppm or higher KH range 3-5 And here are a couple of measurements I've found useful. 1 gram of water = 1 CC = 1 mL = 20 drops = 1/4 teaspoon
  21. I remember that store, IF I remember correctly it was somewhere along gaetz near the industrial area on the east side side of gaetz, near the road that goes to olymil. its been a long time but thats the general area.
  22. You can try Parkland Nurseries 1-403-346-5613. They are the RamBridge distributors for Red Deer (http://www.rambridge.com/distrib/distrib1.html). Not sure if they have dry ferts but you can check.
  23. Thanks for the info. byte: At this rate I'm cleaning the glass every 3 or 4 days. werner: Thanks for the link, It has more info than the one I found.
  24. When I first upgraded my lights and changed my substrate my plants were doing awesome and the algae basically dissappeared. Now my plants aren't doing so great and the algae has come back with a vengence. It seems that almost every kind of algae has taken up residence - I've got brown diatoms, green spot, hair, black brush, some sort of flourescent green stuff on the sides. I'm getting a little frustrated. I'm dosing Tropica Nutrition liquid and Kent potassium. I also have seachem root tabs under the heavy feeders. The tiger lotus has been sucking up transferable nutrients from the older leaves leaving me with old yellow leaves that have green veins and new leaves that look perfect. The rest of the plants aren't showing me any signs of deficiencies but the algae I've started to farm is ticking me off. CO2 is at about 30ppm, ferts are dosed twice a week (tried 3 times a week but it made the problem worse). Maybe I should cut back to once a week? If I had to guess I'd say maybe a lack of nitrogen or magnesium? I don't have easy access to ferts but am willing to order some in.
