  1. Update: It's been almost a month and the little buggers are starting the growth spurt I've read about...seem to double in size every few days! The male is quite funny, seemingly relegated to hiding in a front corner of the tank under the leaves of an African sword plant...barely ventures out toward the fry before Mom darts over nose to nose and then he swims back to the far corner of the tank and sulks for a minute lol. Mom or Dad seem to have snacked on a few of the kids - still quite a soal of the fry but less than at the beginning. I've watched for hours, even in the dark using the moonlights and have not seen either parent snacking on the fry but who knows?
  2. I've found that as long as you don't have a "storm surge" type flow rate literally tumbling your fish violently across the aquarium with no place to rest, then the more filtration the better. (You can add some do-it-yourself flow diverters to the AC's if you need to reduce the current a bit.) I run 2 AC 110 (formerly 500) on a 55 gallon with no troubles...also run 2 of the AC 70's (formerly 300) on a heavily occupied 33 gal grow out. I tend to mix the filter media a bit when running 2 HOB's on a single tank, provides lots of great bio and physical filtration though! Running those two filters you are cycling your tank at a minimum of 172 gallon/hr to a maximum of 700 gallon/hr according to the Aquaclear information, theoretically cleaning all the water in your tank between 4 and 16 times an hour. Good Luck, Hal
  3. :welcome: Just post what you are looking for in the Buy / Sell area and I'll bet you'll have people ready to provide what you need! Hal
  4. I assure you, my location is visible beneath my profile, as is that of everyone I've seen posting in Buy/Sell here who bothered to list one. Sam Chicklets is the moderator looking after that area it seems and he is constantly having to remind people to add their location...in the vast majority of those incidents the poster does not show location in their profile, they update and later do...just thought you could lower a fellow moderator's Blood pressure with, as you say, a simple change. My last suggestion - nuff said.
  5. Considering the response I think this will be my last suggestion for changes. I meant no offence by making the suggestion. FYI - I didn't care, just thought it would solve an issue for Admin/Moderators simply.
  6. :welcome: Hi, There are a lot great people here -extremely helpful site!!
  7. Since many times each week (usually in Buy/Sell) we see location requested over and over, and moderators state it is an on-going pain in the ***, perhaps, like an email address etc, it should be a mandatory field on each name profile?
  8. Where is it located in / near Vancouver?
  9. In December there was a related thread, how to get the right meds for this and how it worked out well. http://albertaaquatica.com/index.php?showt...p;#entry2138896
  10. I used moonlights on all my tanks, my zebra loaches seem to carry on business as usual, no jumping now. In my opinion they used to jump when startled in the total darkness before I added all the moonlights.
  11. During Sunday's CAS auction the auctioneer held up 1 lot of plants saying it was one of the 3 kinds of plants immune to cichlid attack or something similar. Anyone know what he was refering to?
  12. :welcome: You've come to the right place for information, help and more!
  13. I behaved myself, promised a very nice member here I would adopt their fish as they are leaving the hobby for a few years and I had to keep lots of room, I gave in to a few additions to my species specific tanks; 5 Julidochromis marlieri (Gombe) 4 Julidochromis ornatus (Golden Julies) to add to the 4 I had from Frank last month. Sciaenochromis fryeri – Electric Blue (2 females/1male - sadly the dark coloured little male was DOA on the ride to McKenzie :boxed: I really wanted that little fella...) first fatality in/enroute to my tanks in many, many months 2 nice lots of dark green Java Moss
  14. I checked and they will have memberships available at the auction.
  15. I use moonlights on all my tanks. Not only do you get to enjoy seeing the action after dark, I believe my fish are less stressed, they don't go from total light to total darkness back to total light...the moonlight on timers gives me a twilight and dawn. I just bought a setup that has a dimmer set up I am going to try out on a larger tank...can dim the moonlight right down or set it into a more realistic cycle effect. For me the moonlight and being able to see what goes on in my tank after dark makes it worthwhile.
  16. Like it says, just trying to get an idea of how long such auctions run. This one starts at 11am, just want to plan my day a bit better. Edited: Sorry I missed you there Kyle, I got up and going too early and missed your last pm. Today I brought my neighbour who got me started on cichlids, he was generally impressed with the auction and will be joining this group soon I think. Besides a few others, I bought the Gombi and Ornatus groups, great additions to my species only tanks. ... I can not believe I got out of there without buying another tank... When is the next auction lol!
  17. :welcome: You'll find lots of very informed and helpful people here!
  18. More knowledable here steered me to web sites with scientific bents that showed true green terrors vrs the Saum commonly sold as GT. I am fairly new to this, and very new to GT's so I asked for help ID'ing the fish...and the title reflected the expert, group and what seemed like the scientific opinion. I too saw sites that listed the saums as GT's... I am not an expert, others here seem to be. :smokey:
  19. An additional thought...if a priced object will not sell...any way to ensure it is not bumped daily/frequently by the seller anyway...that is very annoying and might prevent members taking the time to look through many such posts to get to "fair priced" ones. As to setting the price, by all means only the seller should. As a newer hobbiest I for one would appreciate pm's to let me know if I am "killing the market" with way too low a price or asking too much... I want always to be fair but don't comparison shop much as many here seem to - I don't know the going rate, can only let others know of this site and what the stores charge for the same set up...not to pick at seller but just to try in a helpful manner to let them know if they want to sell it what the "store rate" is... what they do is up to them. What ever the choice, so far my experience is that this forum is extremely well run, without the excessive autocratic authority personalities running around you sometime find elsewhere. Keep up the good work - it is appreciated!
