  1. I kept a salvini once with oscars and jd's and it had no choice but to hide as it was only a 77 gal tank and the oscars were continuously laying eggs. They are a nice fish and might do better if kept in a species tank or with smaller tankmates or other non-cichlids... eg. clown loaches.
  2. These fish have an allure to some people and evidently they are rare enough that someone is trying to auction them off at $150. I say take the money and run . By the way I'm not a fan of albinos , but that must have been a cool surprise.
  3. 9:30 it is I'm usually up by 8:00 am. Any other takers?
  4. I have to go to a bbq now so I'll check on here later to see how many. And whta time.
  5. I'll be around Sunday am. If you let me know what time I'll have the breakfast ready. Anyone else that you know might be interested let me know the wife's out of town so we can have a fishgeek party.
  6. Thanks , Rahim but I already have some fish that need to be moved and I think this is probably the cheapest way for me to go. By the way I love the champsochromis caruleus, and I don't think Golds website has been updated in months I'm not sure why its on my favorites list. Cichlid forum and malawi mayhem are great sites for picks though aren't they?
  7. Great suggestions guys but because nobody really gave me a response that I liked by Thurs I went and dumped my fry in that tank. But because you are both so close to what I was going to keep I'll treat you to lunch on Sunday if that works. My decision is that I'm going keep some baeschi ,heterodon, moori, and taiwon reef. Not sure how i'm going to stock yet. I'd like to move my heterodons and reefs to the 100 from the 150 and add yellow labs to that tank. So the 150 would end up with cp. azureus(1m,1f) phenochilus (1m,1f) and taeniolatus red emp.(1m,1f)and I think I can probably find some yellow labs to go in there as well. The 100 would be as above. The trouble is the baeschi that I have now are too small to go with my taiwon reefs and heterodon. Once I get rid of all my other fry I'll have room in my 33 to raise the baenschi but I don't want to add the peacocks last because they'd get picked on. I may have to trade my fry in on some larger baenschi and moori. Dilemma. We should discuss it over a steak and a beer on Sunday.
  8. I had a red-finned giant gourami once that used to be followed around by my clown loaches . They seemed to be welcomed guests most of the time, occaisionally he'd let them stick their heads right in his mouth. It was almost as if they were providing him a service most of the time. Once in a while ,however ,they would get too agressive and he would bolt across the tank. Then the loaches would all chase him around for awhile and things would eventually settle back to normal. It was like some weird symbiotic relationship that wasn't always beneficial to both species. In fact I think my synodontis did the same thing to that gourami, but nothing bad ever happened.
  9. If losing 2 fish and getting 20 to replace them is the worst thing that happens to you in this hobby then you are darn good or darn lucky. A lot of strange things can and will happen the important thing is to learn from them. I recently lost a whole tank and I learned not to go camping on Aug. long.(last year I lost my Frontosas). It sucks to lose your breeding stock but if it was easy you would've lost interest by now. Remember there are a lot of species out there left to explore and you've already had success breeding . Keep your stick on the ice and your prop in the water and boldly take on new challenges because there are more rewards and unfortunately dissappointments coming up. Good luck ,Ryan.
  10. I've been looking at so many pictures now ,they all look the same. Kyle is pretty close on the labridens but in the pictures I've seen they(m&f) have red or orange stripe on the dorsal fin . Definately protomelas.
  11. My guess is that they are some morph of protomelas taeniolatus . There are quite a few morphs displayed on Cichlid Forum and Malawi mayhem . I don't think they are hybrids but I've been wrong once before. Honestly I think they are the genuine article,I'm just not exactly sure which morph.
  12. I think my male phenochilus (wild caught) is finally getting serious. He just took on the reigning 6 month champ Cop. Azureus and, after ten minutes of posturing, made one swift ,but precise bite to the dorsal fin and Azureus was running with his tail between his legs. NEW CHAMPION!!!! Not only that but his girlfriend thinks he's all that and a bag of chips as well. Already circling each other . I hope this is the beggining of what every enthusiast dreams of : breeding wild caught fish. And yes they do eat NLS.
  13. The tank is 18"x18"x72" It is a 100 Gal long. I've never been a big fan of albino fish. For some reason its like a defective gene to me.I like the bright colors.
  14. That looks wicked! I also saw an article somewhere on CF (DIY) that showed you how to make a plywood aquarium and if I'm not mistaken there was enough material to build 2 large aquariums. Not a project I'd do myself but if a guy had a partner 2 heads are better than one and so are 2 aquariums.
  15. No, I've kept Mbuna in the past. I'm open to just about anything. A new chapter in the Malawi saga is what I'm looking for. I think I've probably kept about 1/100 of the species discovered in the 80's and a lot has changed since then . They are always finding new species and morphs that's why I'm into Africans. Sorry , Lake Malawi cichlids.
  16. Just so you know I'm only into Malawi cichlids and would like to go to Calgary on Saturday so I'll make my choice by Thursday unless I get called to go to work in which case it would be my next days off. Sorry its a little vague.
  17. I think I'm over the whole situation . Check out my latest thread.
  18. Since I lost all of my fish from my 100 Gal and I already have the parents of most of my fry I need to restock that tank with something different .I currently have a 150 gal with 1m 1f taiwon reef , 1m 1f cop. azureus, 1m 1f phenochilus, 1m 1f red empress, 1m 1f ot. heterodon so it has to be something other than these guys. The person who picks the inhabitants to re-establish this tank that I find most favorable gets to come with me to Calgary to pick up the fish with a significant other and go to Red Lobster for supper. Game on!
  19. Wow funny how a fifteen pack can turn into a 30 pack when you work out of town.I just got home and the last fish is still alive and kicking (no longer gasping for air). I never really cycled the tank because I used half the water out of my 150 gal. and the first Rena XP3 came off that tank as well. The rocks also came out of that tank so the only thing left is the sand and if that was a problem I'm a monkeys uncle. As for water main issues its entirly possible seens how they're ripping Gaetze Ave apart but no warnings were put up.I think I'll just chalk up another one to the August long demons because it was the same weekend last year I lost my Kigoma frontosa to a similar fate. I guess next year I'll have to stay home.
  20. I just checked the test kits and they don't expire until 07/31/2008. I don't know if they are any good they were the only ones available at Petland at the time of purchase. They are Nutrifin. I used them to test my 33 about 2 months ago and they gave me good readings . I don't test often because its a pain in the #@# and if it isn't broken don't fix it. There is some weird algae growing on it though. Its not your average green stuff its more of a brown color if anyone can tie that in. I've never seen it before. It may be from the Coralife lights that I'm using . Thanks for all your suggestions .I think I'll go get a case of beer and try to drown my sorrows.
  21. The tank has been running for a month and I don't use air stones . I do have 2 powerheads and 2 Rena XP3 filters on it . Its a 100 Gal tank. I have been doing large scale water changes. I'll check to see if the kits have expired but I've only had them 6 mos.
  22. Media was rinsed, and all feeding was stopped when fish started dying . This one is a real mystery. There's usually an easy answer to these problems. Water changes aren't making it any better and the remaining fish is still sucking for air. Electrical connections are good so I don't know what the cause is .
  23. My sister in-law was here to scoop out the dead so there wasn't much chance for a major build up. The only thing i can think of is that I had tape goop on the tank so I sprayed some brake cleaner on a rag and rubbed off the goop. The first fish however died before I left and before the brake cleaner was used. I was careful not to get any in the tank. I'm not convinced that 's what caused this mass exodus though I haven't ruled it out.
  24. I have no idea if even was a nitrate or nitrite spike . I tested everything this morning because the one fish that remains was at the top gasping for air . I just assumed it was nitrates because I just added a second filter and I expected maybe to see some fluctuation. All tests (ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and Ph ) came back OK so I am totally baffled . I still think its a water quality problem because a gill disease or parasite wouldn't kill them that fast. The only test that was a little low was the Ph test and it was the same as the other 3 tanks so that is out. All other tests came back as 0. The other 3 tanks also got a water change before we left and they're OK so I don't think its the tap water. I'm terribly frustrated at this point because I can't find the problem and therefore I can't change it . I've done 2 water changes since I got home last night and conditions aren't improving. Any ideas would be appreciated.
